This cabin is a perfect retreat for two. Description is spot-on. It is very steep access to the pond. Pond was clear and refreshing, great for daily swimming and exploring with the provided canoe and paddle boat. Sitting at the happy hour deck to enjoy sunsets became our favorite daily routine.
So wonderful to hear about your stay. Glad were able to take advantage of the “happy hour deck” - it’s one of our favorite spots to sit in the evening as well!
1 month stay at Loon's Nest
Poor to no internet recept. Online listing showed sm beach but there was no beach. No safety railings for lower deck, very unsafe. Windows in bedroom do not open so very little ventilation. Canoe had 1 usable paddle. Parking across street was inconvenient. Would suggest a water filter as 1 month of no potable water was a stretch.
On positive side, sound of loons was
lovely. Neighbors very friendly. Truly a camp atmosphere.
Thank you for the feedback and we are so sorry you has some issues. We were just down the lake most of the time you were there and would have been more than happy to talk to you more about any questions! I'll try and provide a brita filter, but where the pump draws from the lake, bottled water is recommended. The lake level is something that fluctuates during the summer based on rain and the number of beaver dams down the stream. We did canoe down and remove some dams while you were there, but some are just too big to remove. There is a sand beach at the lake now, but everyone on the lake had a limited sand area through June and most of July. As for the canoe paddles, we had just bought two new aluminum paddles for the house before you arrived that were leaning against the house. There are two windows on either side of the lower level bedroom that open and the door has a well sealed screen door we usually leave open as well when we stay. We do know the internet service is weak there since the lake area only gets dish internet - maybe someday we'll get high speed internet to Chesterville! Again, sorry for any inconveniences you had and we hope you enjoyed the lake!
We loved our stay at the lake house ! Very peaceful and relaxing
The owners were very responsive and let us check in earlier since it was Thanksgiving day :) The view is amazing, the kitchen has everything, many games for the long winter nights.
The only things to know before your stay: bring your water and the bathroom is pretty rusty. It might be not appropriate for young kids.
Cozy and quiet
The pond is beautiful and peaceful. The place is a little small but perfect for us and 2 labs. The water smells like iron but that's expected. The owners are nice and helpful. The cabin is centrally located to any sights you want to visit in the state.
Some great aspects to this camp; others not so enjoyable
This cabin was in the perfect spot and the lake is beautiful. We heard the loons every night during our stay. Just the right size for the two of us! However, the bed was horribly uncomfortable, which I passed onto the owner when we left two days early (we couldn't take that mattress for one more night!) She got right back with me and said they had never had a complaint about the bed in over a year but said they would look into it. The only other thing they need to do is update the shower stall. The one that is there must be the original -- a metal stall which has rust and just doesn't feel that clean. I know it's a camp and they have done a lot of work on remodeling it, but just these 2 things would make it wonderful!
Loon's Nest in Chesterville, ME
We are longtime Maine renters but this was our first lakefront rental in many years, and our first visit to the Chesterville/Farmington area. We could not have chosen a sweeter cottage! The lake views from the upper and lower windows are gorgeous, the water was the perfect temperature for swimming, and although there were cottages on either side of us it was very quiet & peaceful. Our hosts Laurie & Ian were also on the lake the week of our stay, and they were very responsive to anything we needed. There are great things to do in the area and our farthest day trip was Augusta; we highly recommend the Maine State Museum and lunch at the Red Barn! Nearby Wilton is host to Dew Haven animal sanctuary and some very cute antique shops. Downtown Farmington also has a wonderful main street with shops and places to eat. Farmington also has a great wash & fold laundromat. We took day trips so we could enjoy dinner at the cottage and the amazing sunsets.
The cottage itself is a great combination of rustic & quirky, and it was very comfortable for the two of us. My brother in law joined us for the day with his black Lab and they had a great time; the cottage is pet-friendly and the dog really enjoyed the beautiful shaded upper deck. Be prepared for a fairly steep walk down to the water on some rough stone steps; there is a very secure handrail and once you are there the small sandy beach area is a perfect spot to walk into the lake. The bedroom is down a flight of stairs also, and the bathroom (shower stall only) is upstairs off the kitchen; not really an issue for us (ages 57 & 59) but it might be for others so it's worth mentioning. The bed is very comfortable and we both slept really well. The kitchen is well-equipped and the owners have stated that the old 50's stove will be replaced; it is not fully functioning and not the easiest thing to cook on so we opted for the outdoor grill for most meals. The evening views are absolutely incredible here so be sure to watch the sunset from the deck or down on the dock; my husband took a time-lapse video of the sunset one evening and it was absolutely magical. We did not do any fishing or boating on this visit, but I swam every day and the lake is clean and calm. We also had loon visitors every evening so be sure to listen for them! Overall, we had a fabulous stay at Loon's Nest--the weather cooperated, it was quiet and restful, there are great local things to do, and the owners are wonderful people. Enjoy!
