Historic remodelled stable barn near nature conservation
This ground floor apartment has sweeping views of our fields, brook and pond from the windows of the kitchen/diner. Watch the horses graze while you eat your breakfast. The doors open to a private fenced patio with a gate opening to the garden. There's walking for your dogs from the farm to take you to the quintessential village of Thakeham with its pub and old church through ancient woodland. From there there is access to the South Downs National Park. The South Coast is 15 minutes drive and the Railway Station with access to London is 10 minutes away. Fully heated and insulated for cosy winter stays too. All behind secure electric gates for privacy and security.
Perfect and cosy cottage, exactly like on the description, we loved our stay and felt like home.
We were sad to leave this peaceful place and will come back as soon as possible !
The property was in a wonderful situation, a beautiful, peaceful outlook onto fields which we walked across to visit the lovely farm shop. The cottage was cosy and comfortable and our little one really appreciated the toys and high chair provided. Alison was really friendly and helpful. We had a really wonderful three nights, thank you.
Wow !!!!! we loved the peaceful atmosphere of the property, right in the middle of the countryside surrounded by nature, it had everything and more inside from a well stocked kitchen/diner and comfy beds. We had family come to visit and there was plenty of room and the host was really lovely. We also brought our six month old puppy with us too and he loved it .
We had a fantastic time at this property for a one off Christmas getaway. The property itself was beautiful, the photos really donât do it justice! Alison even decorated for us, which was a lovely touch and made our stay feel extra special. Alison was very responsive before our stay in answering any questions we had, and was always available during our stay (even though it was Christmas!). The only small problem we had was regarding the oven fan which didnât seem to be working. We did let Alison know and hopefully this has been fixed now, but something to check if you are planning to cook during your stay. Overall a gorgeous place which we would highly recommend!
A lovely relaxing stay in our converted stable/barn
We stayed in this comfortable rustic barn conversion with south facing patio and glass doors overlooking the woods and fields for over 2 weeks. The kitchen was modern and well equipped. Comfortable lounges and beds. It was a short drive to typical English villages and the South Downs Way - views from Devil's Dyke were breathtaking and the restaurant/pub there superb! Petworth was a standout destination with lots of history and marvellous little shops.
Alison was our perfect host - so friendly with lots of local knowledge. She gladly provided extra towels for our unexpected guest and nothing was too much trouble for her. A wonderful stay.
A lovely cottage in a pleasant peaceful rural location.
Great views from the rear veranda. A great kitchen/ dining area and plenty of space throughout.
Would highly recommend and would stay again without hesitation.
Alison & the cottage was lovely, had everything we needed, we took our dog with us and she especially loved the field next door to run round.
Great location and easy to find.
The Old Stables is the perfect base to explore the South Downs and nearby coast. The property had everything we needed for our stay. We were unaware that there was a studio flat above and some of our neighbouring guests were a little heavy footed.
We had a lovely time and the property owner couldnât have been more helpful. She even posted my sonâs favourite teddies which were accidentally left behind.
Would highly recommend it to families.
Fantastic weekend away in a lovely little place. Very relaxing, with wonderful surroundings. Very good communication from the owner. Would not hesitate to return
The weather was awful, but we had lovely muddy walks across the fields and loved the cottage which had snug bedrooms, spacious living rooms and a well equipped kitchen.
The best get away place I could ask for. It was absolutely perfect break for me and kids. So quiet and public footpaths perfect for tranquil walks. The owner is the nicest person you will meet and my kids loved the stay. The cottage has everything you need and I was making 3 meals a day without any issues and actually really enjoyed staying indoors as the place is just so wonderful. Definitely will be coming back.
I live in the farmhouse next to the Old Stables. I was born and brought up in the district and although have travelled extensively now retired to live back home. My youngest daughter lives locally, has started her own veterinary practice and rides the horses that live on the farm. So if you need anything, I am just to hand with my two Bedlington Terrier dogs in attendance.
If you love the countryside and nature conservation as well as historic buildings, this has it all. But you do not have to compromise on comfort as the renovation has been done to modern building standards. There is plenty of hot water, comfortable beds, squishy sofas and good internet connection.
Knepp Rewilding is now nationally and internationally famous for turning thousands of acres of intensively farmed land into a haven for wildlife. You can book safaris from their website so you get a personal guide to the research and development. You can walk there in half an hour. Also the RSPB has a site in Pulborough on the wetlands at the Wild Brooks. The South Downs Way has been walked upon by our ancestors for as far back as we can discover. Bronze Age barrows, Iron Age hill forts and the beacons at Ditchling are evocative of the past. To be enjoyed on foot, horseback or cycle. Come back to the cottage and you can sit in the shade of the huge Alder tree by the brook and pond, so cool in the now hot weather of our new summer climate. There is a gas barbecue for eating out in the garden.
