We were so looking forward to our Byron Bay holiday, having booked what appeared to be the perfect house online at a five-star price, so our expectations were naturally aligned. Although the property was in a perfect location, it was clear on arrival that the photos were taken many years ago, and that the house itself needed a really good clean! We were met with ant infestations, grime and cobwebs, and leftover rubbish from previous guests, in addition to mouse and gecko droppings throughout (including on picture ledges). Despite being advertised to include 'basic amenities', soap, coffee pods and other essentials were missing. The bed linen was also in an unacceptable condition, with stains and blood blotches indicating it was in desperate need of a proper wash. When feeding back these issues to the property managers, "East Coast Escapes", in Byron Bay, their deflection was not to acknowledge and apologise but to say "that's not our usual standard, its a fabulous location isn't it"!! ....The disconnect between the premium price and the substandard accommodation and management was deeply disappointing.
Amazing location - great house for a family with kids
We really enjoyed our stay at Above the Pass. What a location. Less than 3 minutes walk down to the beach where our children swam everyday in the waves - aged 6 and 11. Easy walk up to Wategos for more swimming and drinks at Raes. The house has great views, plenty of places for a sunset drink and lots of space for everyone to enjoy quiet time and family dinners. The bathrooms could do with an update / quite old and a bit tired, but the rest of the house was fabulous. The house didnât come with beach towels, but I emailed the rental manager who arranged for the linen company to drop some off, which was very good service. We very much enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend it to families.
we loved our time at the house, easy walk to the beach and the pass cafe. No beach towels was a problem. and failure to respond to texts asking where they were. pantry and kitchen well stocked but no coffee pods and yet sugar tea etc was annoying. loved the home overall you;d definitely stay again
We have just had the loveliest week at Above the Pass sharing such an amazing property with our family and enjoyed every minute
Very special experience
Loved it! Really special holiday hanging out with my two teenage kids. We just wanted to stay put!
Loved it! Really special holiday hanging out with my two teenage kids. We just wanted to stay put!. Which was just what we were after. Hope to be back some day.
We truly enjoyed both the house and the location. The house is stunning, architecturally designed and nicely furnished. We liked being a bit outside the centre but still walking distance... and so close to The Pass, which is the best - particularly for children at low tide. I hope we can go back soon :)
We loved staying at Above The Pass. It was in the perfect location for our family, a short walk to the best surfing break at The Pass through the National Park via The Pass Cafe. Approximately a 20 minute walk into town and 1hour round trip walk to the lighthouse via Watagoes. The house had everything that we needed and more; was clean with laundered bed linen; included basic supplies such as soap, shampoo, olive oil, tea, coffee etc. The house has a lovely aspect and has a very spacious, open and airy layout which was perfect for our family of 5 (with teenagers)
Beautiful property within walking distance of Clarkes Beach
My partner and I loved our stay at this property. Well-appointed and spacious, it offered everything we needed for a romantic beach escape. We had a minor issue retrieving the key on check-in, but the property owner who lives next door was very helpful in allowing us to gain access. We intend to stay here again in future.
