Great location for visiting the local wine regions of Rutherglen, Milawa, King Valley, and historic towns like Glenrowan.
Our caring, kind, generous and knowledgeable hosts, Barrie and Pam went over and above to make our 10 day stay comfortable and enjoyable, without being intrusive. My partner also enjoyed meeting the cows on the property.
We enjoyed the novel idea of staying in a train. We especially enjoyed the location, not far from town and right on the Ovenâs River.
Our host was very welcoming and obliging, ensuring we had access to everything we might need.
The old red rattler was a delight to stop in, spent 3, wonderful days and nights there and has everything you need to make your stay perfect, many types of birds around the place making early mornings a joy to be around, went fishing on the river on the property and engaged in many a conversation with Barrie the owner and is a fellow brummie ( uk ),. Highly recommended this place and only a few km from the border with many a day trip around..
We stayed at the Red Rattler recently and had a very relaxing time in this converted 100 year old train carriage. We had everything we needed and Barrie was most welcoming and helpful with suggestions of thnigs to do and where to eat. It was a treat to stay in the train carriage, which is set amongst a tranquil farm setting. Many thanks Barrie and Pam, we hope to come back another time.
Barrie was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. It was lovely every day to enjoy a glass of local wine around a warm established fire which Barrie had waiting for us. Will re book in the future.
We just loved our short stay with Barrie and Pam at the Red Rattler. The train carriage itself is so charming and comfortable, but what really made our stay was Barrie and Pam's hospitality. Every detail was taken care of - Barrie ensured the outdoor fire was lit for us when we got back from the pub, Pam's home made jams in the fridge were delicious, and care was taken to ensure we were comfortable through our stay.
The camp kitchen is well equipped and we made ourselves a full dinner one evening, enjoyed outside by the fire with Tom the cat for company.
Would definitely return!
Quirky accommodation in idyllic surroundings, fabulous hosts
The red rattler retreat is a true hidden gem.
Well appointed, clean and cosy accommodation in beautiful surroundings.
Wake up to bird song and the rustle of the trees, make your self a coffee in the carriage or the camp kitchen and let all your troubles melt away.
Barrie and Pam are wonderful hosts, greeting you like old friends and providing everything you need and more for a great stay and the regular visits from Maggie the dog and Tom the cat make this place fell like a home away from home.
We will definitely return.
Where to, the booking process was very easy. Meet on arrival by the host who fully explain everything about the site plus additional information about the surrounding area. In fact, he was available throughout the weekend but assured us that our privacy maintain.
Will be back and recommend Red Rattler to friends.
Thank you for a lovely weekend.
Even during an extreme heat wave during our stay, the train cabins were very comfortable with great air-con, Barrie ensured we were comfortable on arrival and everything was just delightful.
We celebrated a friends birthday with drinks and games and felt at ease to enjoy ourselves fully, the camp kitchen was great as well as sitting outside and listening to all the birds.
Plenty of hot water, tv's , CD player and all the utensils supplied. It was a pleasure to have Barrie provide us suggestions for local tourist sites, of course being in close proximity to local wineries and river swim made the weekend away delightful to remember.
If you are looking for something completely different this is for you. One long mid 1900s red train carriage divided into 3 parts. 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. You can book one or both bedrooms (the first bedroom includes a kitchenette.) There is also a camp kitchen outdoors nearby. While the facilities are fairly basic they are comprehensive, and help is readily at hand from Barrie and Pam. The sound of the myriad birds in the early morning is a delight. Very peaceful, and the nearby Boorhaman Hotel is a bonus for a surprisingly good meal.
I cannot recommend staying at 'The Red Rattler' enough if you are up in the Hume Region... Barry and Pat are wonderful people and give you as little or as much privacy as you wish, and you do not have to bring a thing! They have everything there, including a range of toiletries and pantry items, along with a continental breakfast included in the price... and the nightly rate is cheaper than most standard hotel/motel rooms. So clean, and a lovely place to rest and recuperate with lots to see in the area. We will be back, and will recommend this stay to everyone. Not suitable for young children, but fantastic for couples who want some time away, and perfect for two couples with the extra room that has its own private access (additional cost involved, but great for what you get). A unique experience. Thank you!
My husband and our 11 year old son had a wonderful week at the Red Rattler. Barrie and his wife Pam looked after us as if we were family.
My son said it was the best holiday ever!
If you are looking for a relaxingly unique experience you cannot go past the Red Rattler. Every comfort was thought of, it really was the best 'glamping' experience we have had to date. The outdoor camp kitchen was well equipped and the fire lit by Barrie every evening was very welcome!
The surrounding townships are charming and friendly and the scenery breathtaking.
We will be back and will recommend the Red Rattler to everyone.
Thank you Pam and Barrie. Please give Maggie a pat from us!

We had such a relaxing weekend at the little red rattler retreat
Such a unique experience
You could easily lose track of time just relaxing
Bring a book, enjoy the quiet time
End of an evening, you can sit around and enjoy the fire
And if you like traditional country pub food, the local pubs are five minute drive away
And donât forget the loo with a view
Thanks for a great weekend
Very good location just out side Wangaratta. Barry the host is fantastic. Got the fire ready for us before we return from dinner so it was hot and welcoming. Will stay again.
What a great quirky experience we had staying in these train carriages . The Red Rattler was comfortable, clean and very accommodating. The host Barry and Pam went over and above to make a stay as enjoyable as possible .
