Beautiful home, full of character!

This was our second stop on our 3 week tour of Ireland and the UK in March 2016. First off - Krista is simply AMAZING. She is a very genuine and caring person, and gladly helped us with our questions (we had SO many questions as this was our first time in London.) When we arrived she had a welcome basket with homemade treats, maps/brochures to EVERYTHING we would want to see and even a birthday banner and balloons (we were there on my birthday) and Easter surprise (my 4 year old LOVED the little Easter egg hunt she set up.) She is very meticulous about everything in the home; we had everything we needed to cook and had info about ANYTHING we could think of (near by stores, good eats, bus/train/underground maps etc.) You can tell that this home is a labor or love, it is beautifully decorated, updated and modern yet homey (toys, movies, reusable grocery bags, Oyster cards, not to mention a beautiful yard (British viewers, read: garden) If you get a chance, read the info/photo book about the history of the house and all they've done to it, it's very interesting. The house is just around the corner from a bus stop which was perfect for us - we used public transportation religiously! We never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a bus, train, or the underground (except when the Jubilee line went down... now that was an adventure.) It's close enough to the city center to not feel out of the loop but far enough away that it was a quiet retreat after a long day of sight-seeing. My only regret is that we didn't have a chance to meet Krista and her husband as we were overwhelmed with sight-seeing and had so many early (2am) days. We absolutely loved staying there, and if we ever got the chance to go back to London we would love to stay there again!

Clearly personal and heartfelt

We were on a month long odyssey of a trip and we started at Krista's place. It remains our favourite place. It is true it is a bit of hike from downtown London but the return "home" after the frenetic pace of central London helps you keep your sanity. We weren't there for one hour before my son said: "I don't know what it is but it really feels like home". The kitchen had everything I needed to cook decent meals and it saved us loads of money on meals. Krista clearly is very serious and thorough about ensuring your family has a great stay. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Trust us, you won't regret it.

Cute place, far from London...

The house is well maintained and you can tell the owners put a lot of thought into making it comfortable for visitors. The special touches like a welcome basket with a note as well as taking the time to spread Easter eggs over the house (since it was Easter time) for the kids was very lovely. Just a note to those wanting to travel to London centre for the tourist attractions, this place is quite far away. It took us 2.5 hours just to get there from the airport (the Piccadilly line was closed and it was rush hour). It also took us a minimum of 53 minutes to get anywhere near London centre. With three exhausted kids after a day of sightseeing this was a bit frustrating. Downtown Royal Greenwich is also a 20 minute bus ride. The reviews about it being so close to everything is definitely misleading.

Home away from home

There are no words to describe how wonderful staying in this house was. Krista is an absolute GEM!! She is beyond helpful, beyond warm, beyond inviting, beyond everything! Her house was just perfect! Very clean, and peaceful after a long day of exploring the wonders of England. Krista is so detailed, she has notes for everything; how to work the radiator, the shower, the front door, labels for every product in the kitchen, the pantry, the bathroom, etc. Bottom line is - you will not go wrong with staying in this beautiful house. After meeting Krista and her husband, I feel I've made lifelong friends. I will definitely be staying here again on my next trip! *If you're lucky, you might see a fox in the garden*

A perfect home

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely and well equipped house in Woolwich very much. We felt at home right from the beginning and we could recommend Explorers Rest without doubt. The house has is a real rest - and after a long day out in London or Greenwich you could hide and relax. Krista is a very friendly host and although she was not in Woolwich everything was perfectly arranged - very personal and so much helpful information about the house and the area around. We would definitely come back again. Very warm regards from Germany.

Alles, was das Herz begehrt

Rest easy explorers!

I stayed at Explorers' Rest for two weeks starting at the end of January 2015. Let me first say, that I travel A LOT! I stay in hotels, bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals all over the U.S. and the world, so I've experienced the ups and downs of travel accommodations. For my first trip to England, I wanted to live like a local and not a tourist, but I wanted to also feel like I was living trendy and comfortably. Explorers' Rest embodies exactly what I wanted! The house is nestled in the friendly neighborhood of Plumbstead Commons inside Greenwich. The neighbors and locals are the nicest people, and you almost immediately feel like you're a treasured neighbor when you pass them on the street. The house itself, is efficiently arranged and meticulously designed. Within hours of staying, you fall right into the feeling that you've been living there for years and the house becomes more of a home to you then just some stay. It's eclectic for sure, but I imagine that anyone from a businessman to a family would find it ideal. Finally, and most importantly, is the owner, Krista. I've stayed at VRBOs before, and have had wonderful owners, but Krista treats you like a long-time friend! She arranges notes and directions for you all over the house to help you acquaint yourself with the surroundings. Not only that, but she's AMAZINGLY quick on the draw when it comes to e-mail correspondence, even going as far as to keep you up-to-date with the local news (while I was there, the buses and rail systems went on strike and she would tell me via e-mail from Sweden before I even knew myself!). My girlfriend joined me for the second week of my travel in the UK, and she too fell in love with the design and layout! So, if you're like me, and you're sitting there weighing your options on where you should stay (like I was) and you just can't make up your mind...let me help you...CHOOSE THIS ONE! I promise you, the only thing you'll have to worry about is dealing with your disappointment for leaving it at the end of your stay. Cheers!

Home away from home

Explorers rest was a perfect home away from home for my family. I am so glad we found this place! Krista was so nice and easy to work with. She was thorough and fast and went over and beyond in answering my questions, from our first correspondence to the last. After we arrived, we could tell that Krista put a lot of time and effort into this property to make it a comfortable and relaxing home away from home for her guests. The property was very clean (inside and out), well maintained and the neighborhood felt safe. The beds were very comfortable and the shower and amenities were wonderful. The kitchen was set up to make it very easy to cook meals. We enjoyed the tranquility explorers rest provided after a long day out in London. The public transportation was easy to navigate and there were a couple of shops close by for basics. We truly enjoyed our stay at explorers rest and would stay again.

Home away from home

If you are like me and deciding between a couple of properties with a family, go no further and choose this apartment! We are a family of 5 (with 3 teens) and we had our own room and the kids had their room with a double bed to share and the eldest had a mattress. The instructions Krista gave were so great when arriving into a city you don't know, we followed them very closely. It took us 1.5 hours to get here in rush hour traffic from Heathrow on the tubes and then a 10 minute bus to the place in Greenwich. Entry was seamless with a key code given to us via email. This apartment was like a home away from home, there was everything you needed, washing machine, dryer, hair dryer, full kitchen with a lovely selection of teas and coffee, some lovely soap and body sprays etc. It is on a quiet street and only 3 minutes walk to a shop that sells milk and other essentials. There is a larger shopping centre 2 bus stops away (about 5 min by bus). The Woolwich Arsenal train station has connections to the DLR and underground and is a 10 minute bus ride away. I also noted there was free parking for a car out on the street if you needed it. The house was also decorated for Christmas which the kids loved, its all these little touches that make this a home away from home.

The Perfect Way To Spend A London Holiday!

If you’re looking for a welcoming home to stay at during your London Holiday, look no further. As travelers who prefer to immerse ourselves in the culture we visit, Explorer’s Rest was the perfect place to stay during our travels in London. This lovely home—situated in a charming neighborhood in Greenwich—provides travelers with the care and comfort of a relaxing and beautiful Victorian flat. Explorer’s Rest itself is lovely and enchanting. Throughout the picturesque home, we found helpful books, notebooks, and pamphlets on how to travel around London, as well as information on where to eat, shop, and explore the city. Additionally, small labels are located around the flat, which permitted us to navigate throughout the house easily. Books, DVD’s, and televisions filled the home, which enabled us to relax and enjoy our surroundings—especially after a busy day in London! Staying at Explorer’s Rest allowed us to spend quality time together. As we reflected on our adventures in the city, we enjoyed a nice meal, and a relaxing cup of tea around the kitchen table. Furthermore, Krista’s kindness and wealth of knowledge is what truly made our journey to London special. One could not ask for a better place.

A place like home

We convey you glad tidings About a beautiful country, In that on my trip We found a special place. Old indeed, but reborn, It holds explorers rest. You open the door To a different world. No noise anymore Midst the global city, But softly scented air Envelops you. All kinds of furniture And decoration are Lovingly combined. The way through the house Is worth a journey for itself. Again and again lovely things Are discovered On every step. And not to forget: I’d never slept Better in my life Than in this bed. Kitchen and bathroom - You’ll never miss anything, If you stay for a short Or a longer time. The pretty garden and Outside the near park, Our dog was so happy As he were at home. In a few days You can’t see all. But now we know a place like home To come back to for the next time. ------------------------------------- A million times thank you, Krista, for everything you did for the house and especially for us! A home away from home!

Explorer's rest proved to be a great base for our London holiday, it felt like staying in a real home with all the comforts and atmosphere of being at home. Krista made us feel extremely welcome with everything from a welcome basket of goodies to a detailed manual outlining everything we could possibly need to know about the house and our stay in London. The house has been wonderfully renovated making great use of available space which in Victorian terrace houses is an impressive feat. While being away from the centre of London, the area is well serviced by public transport with ready access to buses going into London and a very short trip to the DLR. Because we were staying for a month and planning a lot of exploring we bought a monthly transport card but Krista has provided oyster cards for guests to use, you just have to top up the cards. There is a handy local shop for essentials and it is only a short trip to Woolwich for the market or a Tescos that has everything you could possibly need. The common is just around the corner and my daughter and her friend particularly enjoyed seeing foxes on the common and in the neighbourhood. If we were visiting in warmer weather I am sure we would have made use of the lovely little back garden at Explorer’s rest, which is an added bonus. We stayed in December, so a particularly cold time of year but Explorer’s rest was such a cosy place to return home to each night. The fireplaces were an extra bonus but not necessary for heating just nice for the extra atmosphere. Krista even provided Christmas decorations for our Christmas stay. Joanna who came and cleaned once a week during our stay did an amazing job, making the house always feel cosy, comfortable and welcoming. All in all Explorer’s Rest proved a great base for an extended London visit, with all the comforts of a home away from home and Krista made us feel incredibly welcome and provided us with all the information and tools for a great London visit. The only downside is that is possibly not the right place to stay if you want really quick access to all the central attractions but if you don't mind using the public transport it can make for a relaxing visit. Trips into horse guards on the 53 bus provided a relaxing trip into the city and the bus also stops right in front of the imperial war museum. The DLR and the tube were great for quicker trips. With the DLR being overground it also provided another way of just seeing more of London.

Amazing stay in London area!

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful home for a week. Every detail was just like in the pictures- from the lovely garden to the space saving kitchen to the artfully finished bedrooms. What the pictures cannot tell you is that Krista is a fantastic host! She has everything in her home labelled for ease of use; binders of maps and information; movies to watch and cd's to listen to- and Oyster cards to help us get on the train and tube! No hotel would ever do so much. The area around this home is convenient and the people are friendly. Greenwich itself was beautiful to explore and London was about a 20-30 minute transit trip away. This is the 4th time we have booked a "home away" spot- they were all great but Krista's attention to comfort, care and convenience makes this our #1 choice! Bravo- and can't wait to return!

Truly Amazing Holiday Rental

I travelled here on my first international trip and am truly delighted that we chose this location. Krista is more than acommodating, the house is exquisite, and the location is fantastic. From the first email she helped my friend and I with the trip and was extremely prompt in her replies. The house has all the ammenities that you need when renting a home. I was able to cook full meals here in comfort and felt like it was home when staying here. The beds are comfortable and the house is wonderfully decorated. The location is safe and near public transportation making it very easy to navigate to London's city centre. There is a quaint pub and a local market around the corner as well. This house and Krista are truly a delight, and I look forward to staying here again upon another trip to London!

Perfect spot to explore London

Explorer's rest is the perfect spot to explore London and the Greater London Area. Situated in a quiet Victorian neighbourhood in Greenwich, it might seem a bit far from London's tourist attractions at first. But apart from the fact that Explorer's rest has a lot to offer in itself, it isn't actually that far from the city centre. Only a 2 min. walk to a bus-stop, then a 10 min. busride gets you to Woolwhich Arsenal, a transport hub from where you can take a train or the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) into London. And that is only a 20 min. ride, with lots to be seen along the way. The house itself isn't vey large but it's perfectly charming and extremely well kept. It sleeps 4 persons very comfortable (we were with 4: two adults and 2 15-year olds). Krita Vesey is a generous host. Lots of things are provided: books and dvd's (there are 2 televion sets with dvd-players), cd's, and there is a more than generously equipped kitchen. And another very large plus: we found it very interesting indeed to live for a week among average Londoners, in stead of just mingling with the tourist-folk. Near to the house are some convenient shops like a bakery and a grocery. A well-stocked supermarket is only a 5 min. walk away. The is also a pub closeby, as well as a nice park. Imagine travelling into London, seeing all the sights and doing everything else Londonish and after that just go home and make yourself a quiet dinner in stead of having to hunt half the evening for a decent restaurant! We will certainly return, and recommend Traveler's Rest to all that are looking for an unusual way to explore London.

Actually six stars would be necessary here

If you ever plan to visit London, you must stay at the Explorer's Rest. It's the ideal place for young or old couples or families with small children or with teenagers or groups of friends or just everybody. The pretty house is located in a nice street in a quiet area and was extraordinarily clean when we arrived. Everything is small and cosy. You've got two floors, with two separate bedrooms; and, if you want, you can also put an extra bed. Though the two people sleeping in the two double-beds should be well acquainted in each case since they are not very big/wide - but really beautiful. The whole house it very neatly furnished with a lot of taste and dedication. You will find everything you need in the kitchen; besides there is a dishwasher and a washing machine; and don't forget the cute garden! In the living room the London explorer can rest near a fireplace in the evening. We left our car parked in front of the house the whole week and went by bus, tube or train to all the sights. In the nearby surroundings one can find a bakery and all other kinds of shops but also restaurants to go to within walking distance. The owner has provided with an abundance of information in order to be able to explore London and its surroundings in the most extensive way possible. We can highly recommend this Home.

Wonderful place to stay in South London

Dear Krista, Last July, we had a wonderful holiday at your place. We stayed two weeks with our two very young children (2 and 5 years old), and we all loved your house ! Everything was perfect : the house was very clean and so well fitting ! We had the feeling to be "at home", and now our children are asking us to come back in Greenwich !! It was also a good area to be : it was easy to travel to central london as well as to the south and the countryside. (free car park in the street in front of the house !) We would like to recommend your place and would like to thank you for your welcome and your help during our stay. :-) Next time we will stay in London, we will come back to your wonderful explorer's rest !! Thank's from us four ! Yanouchka, Luca, Emma and Noam from Switzerland, Geneva

Quartier calme, quelques commerces (suffisants).

My name is Krista, and I am the long-time curator and caretaker of Explorers’ Rest. Originally from Canada, I moved to the UK in 2002 and instantly fell in love with the character and history of Royal Greenwich. In 2005, I found this Victorian home—a little worn, a little forgotten, yet full of potential—and knew it was meant to be mine.

When I received the keys in early 2006, I walked inside, sat down on the floor, and crie - not out of regret, but out of the sheer scale of what lay ahead. At twenty-seven, on a young teacher’s salary, I had bought the only home I could afford in the neighbourhood I loved
and it needed everything. I didn’t yet know how to plaster a wall, handle a drill, or manage a renovation, but I was determined to bring this beautiful house back to life.

Over the next several years, I rebuilt Explorers’ Rest piece by piece, supported by skilled friends and trusted professionals. What began as a daunting project slowly transformed into the charming, warm, and thoughtfully restored sanctuary it is today. It holds my history, my creativity, and my heart—and every detail reflects that.

When you step inside, I hope you feel the care, the craftsmanship, and the quiet joy that fills this home. I’ve even left a photo album for you to enjoy, sharing the “before, during, and after” journey of its transformation.

A few years later, I moved in with my husband, Erik, a South African IT specialist who had also made London his home. As we began our life together, I wasn’t sure what to do with this house that meant so much to me. Because we both love travelling and staying in beautifully cared-for homes, I decided to open Explorers’ Rest to guests. Within days of listing it, bookings poured in—and hosting quickly became one of the great joys of my life.

I look forward to meeting you!

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

Greenwich is a truly unique corner of London—close enough to embrace everything the city offers, yet peaceful enough to feel worlds away.

My little pocket of Greenwich, Plumstead Common, is, in my opinion, one of its rarest gems. The Common itself unfolds north of Explorers’ Rest and seamlessly connects to Winn’s Common, Rockcliffe Gardens, East Wickham Open Space, and the ancient beauty of Bostall Heath and Woods.

To the south, you’ll find Shrewsbury Park, Shooters Hill Golf Club, and the historic Oxleas Woods - creating a continuous landscape of greenery that feels almost rural.

Surrounded by vast, varied parks, the area offers an exceptional expanse of walking and cycling paths, comparable to countryside rambling - yet we remain just ten minutes from a major transport hub with two Tube lines, a riverboat service, trains, and an extensive bus network.

The neighbourhood itself is warm and welcoming. Neighbours are friendly, gardens are generously sized, street parking is free, and - perhaps the greatest luxury of all - it is blissfully silent at night.

After a full day in Central London, returning home here feels deeply restorative. You’ll be greeted by leafy parks, foxes crossing paths at dusk, birdsong drifting through the morning air, and quiet gardens that invite you to slow down. The surrounding neighbourhoods, once distinct villages of charming Victorian homes, have been gracefully woven into London’s landscape as the city expanded.

I also love how effortlessly I can slip into true countryside from here. While I adore London’s vibrant heart, there is always a sense of calm and comfort when I return to the serenity of my Greenwich retreat at the end of each day.

I hope you too will find that this home and its surroundings invite the explorer in you to exhale, unwind, and settle into a deep and peaceful rest.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

Creating a beautiful, welcoming space is truly my passion. I love selecting thoughtful touches, small comforts, and little surprises to make your stay memorable. I also enjoy connecting with guests, sharing recommendations, and helping you craft a holiday that feels personal, effortless, and special.

One of the rare luxuries of staying at Explorers’ Rest is the peace and quiet. Situated outside the busy tourist centre, there are no flight paths overhead, and the neighbourhood rests in calm silence at night - perfect for deep, restorative sleep. The private garden is equally tranquil, offering a serene spot to unwind, enjoy a cup of tea, or have your own picnic amidst greenery during the spring and summer months.

Practical comforts make your stay effortless: free parking right outside the door, shops just steps away, parks in every direction, and a bus stop around the corner provides convenient access to the rest of London without needing a car.

Inside, my home’s character shines through in features guests consistently love: the deep vintage metal bathtub, perfect for a soothing soak, and the gorgeous fireplace that creates a warm, cosy atmosphere for quiet evenings at home.

London has its rainy days, so I’ve thoughtfully stocked the house with some books, a new Smart TV, and a puzzle with puzzle board, ensuring even a stay-at-home afternoon feels enjoyable and relaxing.

Above all, each room exudes a gentle, enveloping energy to help you breathe, settle, and truly rest after days of exploring this remarkable city.
