Our COVID getaway - if you want to isolate, why not isolate in style.
We spent a week at the Kalinya Estate Homestead & Lodge with our extended family. Grandparents down to young children. The house and grounds are very well maintained with activities for all age groups. I was very surprised at how you can fill in a day and not leave the property.
The local shops are wonderful and very worthwhile exploring. While we did not eat out due to COVID, and decided to order in, everything was wonderful.
The Homestead was very well maintained with modern appliances and enough kitchen space and utensils to feed an army. You will not run short of anything in that department. However, you will need to buy bags of ice as the ice maker is not going to cope with large groups. A single large fridge in the Homestead filled up very quickly, and this needed to be managed with a large group. A separate drinks fridge would be great to see. There is AC in every room with a central control so you will not please everyone. Some rooms also were a lot hotter than others, while some were very cold. There are plenty of blankets for the winter months. We visited in summer. I would bring your own pillow as the pillows were good quality but not to our liking.
You will find the reading room and piano room, a great relaxing area. Our family spent many hours enjoying family games and talking. There are a few areas you can sneak off to and have some alone time to read a book and relax.
The deck does need some maintenance as splinters we easy to come by if you did not wear shoes, our youngest children found out the hard way. A simple oil I believe would fix this; it is more dry than damaged. If you love sitting on a deck with a drink and a book or company, there is no better place. Watching the ducks go back and forth, and kids playing in the yard is magical. I did this every day for many hours.
The pool, squash court, games room, tennis court and spa, were all great. We all spent many hours swimming and relaxing by the pool. Kids loved going to the games room. Even the adults used the gym.
The Lodge was quite modern and well-appointed. The description of AC is very misleading. In summer, the bedrooms that did not have AC were unbearable (That is all but one). No fan was going to solve this.
Mandy is a great host and supplied us with all the local must-see places and great food outlets.
This is a great property for young and old with plenty to do on the property. I would be happy to come back and enjoy Kalinya again with the family.
