My family and I needed to get away from loud fireworks during the 4th of July weekend. Redhawk provided that quiet, comfy get away for us. We enjoyed fishing, exploring and relaxation. Doug was a friendly and helpful as the people of South Park (the acreage place, not the cartoon!) We had a great vacation!
My family and I really enjoyed our stay at the Redhawk Retreat. Itâs nice and private but still close to town. The cabin has a unique design and thereâs plenty of room to spread out in the two story space. Thereâs a ton of cool features and details. We didnât want for anything during our stay and wildlife and sunshine.
The house is very unique â it feels like a tree house perched up in the rustling aspens! We appreciated the thorough check-in guide to prep us for what was available at the house and what to bring, as well as ideas for what to do in the area. We went on some amazing hikes nearby and enjoyed the retreat from hot, busy Denver. The host was communicative and everything was as-described.
This house was more than expected and the pictures don't do it justice. It is beautifully rustic and homely. We were looking for a family White Christmas and it was perfect. We called it our Hallmark Christmas đ the views are amazing and the house has so much character. We loved the decor. The kitchen is well stocked, just be prepared for no full size oven. We did have a hard time cooking our Christmas meal in the small convection oven because it didn't cook as fast as a normal oven would. We were so surprised too that the house stayed warm with only the one downstairs heater. The house is very well maintained and the owner and his cleaning person were absolutely wonderful and very helpful!
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Redhawk Retreat. The house was thoroughly stocked with enough supplies that you could easily cook all meals at the house. There were also plenty of dog supplies- bowls, leashes and bones. The yoga mats and blankets in the bathroom closet were a great surprise. I really liked the decor- everything was unique and thoughtful, and I had not planned as spending as much time in the house as I did, but it was really peaceful to do yoga in the living room and sit on the deck drinking coffee. The property is just a few minutes away from the main Fairplay main street and it took me under an hour to get to Breckenridge. There are a few neighboring houses nearby, but they were far enough away that you feel secluded. Everyone I passed while walking my dogs waved at me and seemed very friendly, and overall, it seemed like a very nice community. The valley behind the house is beautiful. I saw multiple deer and a moose one morning. Douglas provided thorough information on the property and things to do in the area and was quick to respond to all messages. I will definitely be back and look forward to visiting again in the Spring. Thank you for sharing your house!
The unique cobwood round house with two level stone fire place in the middle makes the experience of staying there feel unique as well. With beautiful views from the wrap around deck, chances are high to see wildlife and shooting stars. We were lucky enough to have perfect timing to see the colors of all the surrounding aspens! Minutes from main street in fairplay yet still secluded and quiet.
This property was incredibly charming and exactly what we were looking for over Christmas. The architecture of the house is odd and incredibly interesting. The outside of the house does not do justice to the inside, which feels like a circular cabin in the mountains. Our kids loved exploring and playing hide and seek in the house. There are three beds total, which was a welcome and exciting surprise that our daughter appreciated. The email sent from the owner just prior to arrival was extremely helpful and informative. He always seemed accessible if we had any questions. He also offered to leave a real Christmas tree in the house for us, which was a thoughtful addition. What a great place to get away and spend time as a family. The property has a variety of games and movies, a kitchen stocked with cooking pots/utensils, and useful storage such as ziploc bags and foil. We ventured north to Breckenridge twice and the property was a reasonable drive, not feeling too far from our destination. This property has beautiful views and feels secluded enough even though you're minutes from Fairplay. We would stay at this property again!
We loved staying at Redhawk Retreat; the house is beautiful and comfortable, and very nicely equipped. The views were beautiful and the area was great. Douglas' communication was excellent. We'll be back!
We highly recommend this house! The location is only a short drive and so close to the town of Fairplay. We ate at the new restaurant called Salado in the old steakhouse location and the food is out of this world (chef came over from Blue River Bistro in Breck). The house itself is inspiring, comfy and hand built by artists with amazing views. The king bed was very comfortable and had a big tv allowing us to watch CBS Sunday Morning. Heaven on earth!
What a one of a kind home! We loved the panoramic views and privacy. The house's antique furnishings are beautiful and inviting. Very comfortable and clean. Owners are very easy to speak to and get ahold of when needed.
We loved the house! It was comfortable and exactly what two aging hippies needed for a week away. It's the sort of place you need to feel to appreciate. It's not far outside of Fairplay, but it feels like you're way out in the mountains :).
The thing is, the photos don't really do this place justice. The cordwood construction is a major feature, so you feel like you're in a magical hideout! Upstairs is an open living/ kitchen area and a very comfortable king bedroom. Downstairs are two bedrooms and the laundry -- so, it would be fantastic for a family with kids old enough to sleep downstairs, or a couple looking for a good retreat.
The owner was super easy to work with, very prompt and helpful. I would rent it again, maybe in the winter next time so we can use the fireplace!
We live in Denver and wanted a quick inexpensive getaway. When we arrived there was a huge moth problem and we spent our first night killing about 40 moths.
I am just a little disappointed that there was no small refund offered for the inconvenience. We were unable to open windows and enjoy the fresh mountain breeze.
I will say the House was stocked well and the master bed was comfortable so that was a plus.
Loved this house! Very unique construction and design, set in among some aspens for added privacy. You can see but not hear the neighbors. Very close to town if you forget something. Charcoal grill worked great for us. The Limber Grove Trail was about 5 miles away and great for kids (3.5 and 7 months).
We thought the cabin was really cool. It was fun to see our kid's excitement when we pulled up and during the initial exploratory tour. It is a 5 minute drive to FairPlay so it's not necessary to bring all your food and supplies with you. Check in and out was very easy. The owner is very responsive to questions. The night sky is insane at the cabin. Our first night, the sky was completely clear and we could see a ton of stars and the Milky Way. Huge difference from the city night sky that we are used to. We had a great relaxing weekend.
Great getaway, and beautiful home with a warm feel, art and rustic feel combined
We loved this home; the circular design, the rustic logs, the fireplace and stone chimney, the little details. The owners were also amazing with condiments and extras that you usually don't see. We left our cooler with a lot of stuff in it and they contacted me to let me know and had it returned by a neighbor who lived near us! It was just my husband and myself, but it's a great space for families. The space was perfect, will stay here again!
Tucked away in a Colorado aspen grove, the cord cabin is delightful. Well furnished. Very helpful owner. Lots of great hiking nearby. Thank you Doug for a great trip!
Just spent 5 days and 4 nights in a state of relaxation. This beautiful home fit our needs perfectly. My daughter and her dog ran in the mountains each day and we toured the local attractions in Fairplay and enjoyed the 70 degree "heat" instead of the 98 degrees at home in Texas. Douglas was attentive to our needs and the house is both unique and comfortable. Will come back in the future if in the area.
Seems like the owner went out of his way to make sure your every single need was met in the cabin. From all the kitchen items to toilet paper and laundry soap. Every thing you needed was there. Thank you very much!
This is a lovely, tranquil cabin away from it all! Close enough to Fairplay that you can run into town for any forgotten items. Far enough away that you have your own space at the base of the mountains! The home is well equipped. The owner is very kind and readily available by phone or text if needed. So thankful for the dog friendly policy. Our sweet old lab had a great time hiking and exploring!
My family has been in and around Breckenridge since the late 1960's. When it came time for me to buy a home in Colorado, we ranged over the pass to find Redhawk. Liz and I bought the house from the original owners/designers/builders Jim and Beth Redhawk. Both artists, the home is literally their largest 'piece'. We have owned the home for the past two decades. Living here year-round one season while I took on an emergency vacancy at the local high school as music and performing arts director. Liz and I make our 'other' home in Portland, Oregon. Our work takes us across the country and Internationally as concert and theater musicians. While we are away, we are happy to share our home for you to also enjoy Redhawk Retreat.
"Redhawk" is not only the name of the builder and the name carved into the front door. It has become the moniker for the home, itself. As performing artists, we had a desire for our home to be in line with our own sense of individuality. Meeting Jim and Beth and learning of the community effort that went into the construction of the house, we felt an immediate kinship with their home.
Constructed as a 'cordwood' home, it is a perfect model for the style. High efficiency heat retention makes this home warm in the winter with a low environmental impact.
