Birthday trip for the old man
Awesome views. Liked being away from Bar Harbor and closer to the smaller harbors. Cool trail to SW Harbor
Thanks for coming and staying at Island Watch, Bill! Hope your birthday week was a great one.
We had a lovely stay at Island Watch. Our group has stayed at a lot of houses and everyone gave this one great marks. The owners were wonderful and responsive. The views are stunning and we loved taking the path into town most days. The only suggestion would be to upgrade some of the beds as many are very soft.
Thank you so much Heather, we enjoyed having your group! (And thanks too for the suggestion- bed upgrades in progress!)
Loved our stay, views better then pictures could show!
We all loved having our own bathrooms and comfortable beds! Kitchen was fantastic and superbly equipped. I only didn’t give a five star because a hot tub would have taken it over the top! Location is fantastic for getting around the islands and has everything you could need right down the hill in south west harbor village! Bar harbor is nice but it’s a lot of people and becomes all the same after awhile so best to visit and come back to peace and quite😌
Wonderful house, beautiful spot, wonderful family week!
We loved this house! It is so comfortable! It is well equipped, clean and well suited to a big family. The mattresses and bedrooms were good, we loved the living room, the fireplace, the deck. The path down to SW Harbor was magical, especially for the kids. The kitchen is easy to work in, we loved the outside grill. We were able to seat our crowd of 13 around the table! The view from the deck is gorgeous; my son used his drone to take family photos on this deck! Beautiful! We love the setting, the long driveway, the sense of space and peace.
Minor issues: (1)We all wanted shower caddies in the showers to hold shampoos and soaps; putting this stuff on the floor is a pain. (2) Bath mats would be a big help; some of us used beach towels. (3) More towel hooks in our master bedroom bath (the one with the beautiful blue patterned sink) would be so useful! (4) The basement has mildew/musty smell. Eventually, we realized that if we closed the windows with the dehumidifier running, dried the room out, then the smell improved. But then it was not very cool at night. I suggest an air conditioner for the basement bedroom. The dehumidifier tank needs to be emptied every few hours to keep the mildew smell down. Guests need instructions about this in the welcome book.
This is a beautiful property, on a secluded lot, with a fabulous view. The house has everything anyone could wish for! It is terrific! We had a wonderful, unforgettable time. Thank you!
Beautiful property with privacy and gorgeous views.
Perfect for our large family get together. Private and quiet but easily accessible to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Andy and Susan were very responsive to any questions we had about the area and gave helpful recommendations about places to eat and things to do. The views from the back deck are incredible (especially the sunrise)! And the quaint, charming town of Southwest Harbor is just a short hike down a beautiful wooded trail. The house was clean, comfortable and well furnished. We can’t wait to return!
Gorgeous setting, great stay
We chose Island watch for five siblings and spouses because there are very few rentals with handicap access, and plenty of bathrooms. The pictures of the view cemented the choice. We loved it!
The kitchen is open the dining room and view. We cooked all but four of our meals for the week. And yes, we used the lobster cooker.
I want to address the handicap issue. We are all 60ish and two are handicapped, one with cancer and a recent hip replacement, on crutches, and the other wheelchair bound. The one on crutches was fine except for the shower, since his room had a handicap height toilet. He was glad for the heat in his room. Although the layout is a bit odd, (adjoining) there are two rooms opening to the driveway, and to the living area and then to the deck. However, there were challenges for the wheelchair. There are lips at the entry doors to the handicapped rooms and the drive slopes so the wheelchair needed close attention. Also, the bed was too high. That was solved easily by removing the bed frame. The toilet in that room was too low for handicapped and the shower was not accessible. A bench was provided, but there is no handheld shower head. The access to the deck is through the sunroom, with two doorways with lips. Another issue was there was not a spare set of sheets and the bedding had to be washed several times during the week.
I say all that to inform, not to be critical. Most people do not understand what special needs mean in all situations. There were challenges, but we managed. This was the only home we saw available with no steps to access the house. It's great, just realize it's not perfect.
On the upside, we all had a bathroom, and the spouse of the handicapped member used an upstairs bath which was lovely. In addition to the two rooms on the main floor, there are four bedrooms upstairs. Two are en suite, the third is a small room with a single bed and half bath. A fourth room has a bath across the hall. Downstairs in the basement is an apartment with laundry, bath, living, kitchenette and bedroom. This was perfect for our family member who was working during vacation. The large table and kitchen counter created an office. This space has windows all across open to the woods and wildlife. The larger TV there was nice for baseball playoffs.
This home is like going to grandma's. It is funky and homey and lovely. We are so glad we stayed.
