Maison Sur Howard Street Elsie

Super fun home, lots of space and a great place for a big crowd

absolutely loved staying here!!! Everyone was comfortable and felt they had their own space. Each room has its own bathroom, and the outdoor showers were a huge hit. Each and every space had the coolest decorations, was fun to sit in each space and just take them in :) Beds were super comfortable, and the place was well stocked with everything we needed and then some.Kathy was always quick with each response and very helpful. The place is perfect !!!

Amazing house on a beautiful island.

From start to finish we had a great time on Ocracoke with family and friends. The home we renamed was absolutely gorgeous! The communication with the owner was outstanding. We look forward to coming back to Ocracoke soon and renting the same house if available. The cleanliness and amenities provided at this house was great. This house is a show piece and testament to the owners attention to all details.

Spring Break '25

We had an amazing stay! The house is beautifully restored and had everything we needed. Plenty of room for us to be together, yet intimate spaces for cozy up with a book (especially the comfortable screened porch.) The various roof top decks offered views and sun time and the two outdoor showers were a real treat, especially the upper deck one that is open to the star-filled nighttime sky. Location is great - easy walking distance to all the shops and restaurants, yet located in a quiet neighborhood. Bike riding is a must, and so convenient. Highly, highly recommend, and we'll be back!

We enjoyed the family time! Everything was a quick bike ride away. Most of the businesses were closed for the season, but we had ample room to spread out in the home. Absolutely loved the porches!

Elsie's House Is Ocracoke Done Right

I've been coming to Ocracoke for about 40 years now and have crashed in dozens of rentals over the decades. Let me tell you - within 5 minutes of walking into Elsie's House, I was blown away. This has got to be the nicest rental on the entire island. You can just tell the owners poured their hearts into restoring this place. Most rentals on Ocracoke feel like the owners are just cramming in as many beds as possible, grabbing the cheapest appliances and furniture they can find, and slapping up generic "beach art" everywhere. Not here! Elsie's House feels like no expense was spared to create something truly special. What really struck me was how the place manages to feel like a classic Ocracoke home (think the Castle or Whitler's Cottage vibes) while still being incredibly comfortable to hang out in. And that rooftop patio? Absolute game-changer for stargazing at night! If you're seeking an extraordinary Ocracoke experience rather than just a place to sleep, Elsie's House delivers beyond expectations.

Wonderful getaway!

This was our fourth visit to Elsie’s house on Ocracoke. It is our favorite place to stay! The location can’t be beat and we always feel at home. After being cooped up in our house the last few months, it was the perfect change of atmosphere that we needed.

A beautiful and characterful cottage that made for a perfect stay

This is one of the nicest rentals we have had through Homeaway, the cottage is comfortable and has a lovely feeling of character and history. Plenty of room for our family of four and very convenient for local shops and restaurants (we like Back Porch Restaurant best, and Dajio). Would certainly recommend to others.

Great vacation!

A group of ladies (teachers and nurse) had a great time in this home. It was so quaint, cozy, and in a great location. We had beautiful weather and the home had everything we needed to cook meals, stay cool and warm, and a great porch for late night and early morning talks. We all enjoyed the home and would love to stay there again.

wonderful ocracoke visit

We really enjoyed visiting Ocracoke from the home base at Elsie's house! The character of the house was wonderful. It has been renovated recently and has such charm and comfort. Our favorite spots to hang out were the front porch with great seating and swing and also the side yard where are kids played and ate figs from the huge bush. The house was in great walking distance to so many wonderful shops, restaurants, and the school playground.

Absolutely loved it. The only reason we didn't give it five stars was only one bath.

One bath would make this property uncomfortable for more than one couple however if you're a couple that doesn't mind sharing a bath I can't imagine a more convenient and well appointed property on Ocracoke. The remodel is masterful and the amenities and furnishing are fist class. It is obvious the owners have a great deal of affection for this property.

Perfect vacation!

The house and everything about it were perfect! We had such an amazing trip! The island is so beautiful. Everyday we went to the beach we had it to ourselves! It was the prettiest beach I have ever been to by far. The house was wonderful and stocked with anything and everything we could have needed. The kids LOVED the swing outside and the porch is perfect for relaxing. The house has so much history, the books and pictures were a great touch. We will be returning for sure!

Love Elsie's House!

My family of 4 LOVED Elsie's house and the island. the house felt like home. It had everything we needed and my two boys loved the swing and the yard. We spent every evening out there and then would walk to dinner and ice cream. The location could not be perfect and the beach pristine. Loved being able to drive on the beaches...what a neat and enchanting place. The owners of the home were most helpful and accommodating as well.

Staying in a piece of history in paradise

I wanted to share that the location was exactly as described and my family had an amazing stay in Ocracoke. The owner responds within minutes to any request and the location of the house is right in the middle of the town. You can walk, or ride your bike anywhere. The house is a piece of history and the owner did an amazing job keeping that history in tact. We spent a few hours upon arrival just looking at the history in the house. Our family will be back next year. We've always visited Ocracoke every year but we've finally found a place that we will return to year after year. Thanks!

OMG - The Best Cottage Ever.

Thank you for providing your lovely home for my family. I can't express in words how wonderful, charming, clean, cozy, and did I say charming , your home is. It takes a lot to get my husband out of his comfort zone, i.e. couch and tv remote and when I showed him the pic of the 50 inch flat screen he was hooked. He was so comfortable. The location was perfect. We were right in the middle of the village. The Pirates Jamboree was fun seeing everyone walking around dressed as pirates. The weather was so good. We walked a lot and even decorated the front porch with halloween pumpkins and my husband dressed up as a pretty scary longshoremen fishermen outfit with a scary mask. The kids loved it. We had friends who were renting 2 other cottages and when they came to visit us they simply loved your home. They will be renting this house next year. Thank you for being so quick to respond to my questions prior to renting. It is so nice to communicate with owners instead of Rental Companies. We are residents of Kitty Hawk, NC and we will definitely be making this an annual vacation.

A Place We'd Return To

What a wonderful vacation home! The owners have restored Elsie's house in a charming way that retains the history of the place, but is also very comfortable for spending the week in. We were here with our 2 1/2 year old, who slept well in a pack n play in the back bedroom, and she had plenty of space to play with toys in the open living/dining rooms. My parents also visited the island for a couple days, and the big table was perfect for meals and for games. The kitchen is basic, but more than met our needs for cooking (between meals out!). The renovated bathroom is very nice. The porch is an amazing place to sit and read a book . . . especially during a breezy island thunderstorm. And Kathy was very communicative and helpful as we were getting ready for the trip. The house was very clean and just as, if not better than, described. As for the island, Okracoke is a great place for being away (you have to take a ferry to get here!) . . . but not too far away from things to do. My husband kayaked, we spent time at the ocean-side beach (our favorite access was a little ways down, across from the ponies) and the Springer's Point beach on the sound (shallow water ideal for our daughter). So many good restaurants: our favorite lunch was the pork tacos at Eduardo's taco stand, and our favorite dinner was at Dajio (great crab cakes and seafood dinner - and basil margaritas!). We walked to a lot of places, including brunch at the Flying Melon, coffee at Okracoke Coffee, and - very conveniently - the nearby school playground (which is open to the public in summer) and the library. We heartily recommend Elsie's House and Okracoke!

WHAT AN AMAZING HOME AND LOCATION!!!

There are so many excellent things to say, I don't even know where to begin. We arrived on Sunday and were so happy when we rode down the gravel road on Howard St to Elsie's House. What a charming and beautifully renovated home in the perfect historic location! I love the history of this house, the street it's on and the island itself. I had been to Ocracoke last year for two nights and said last year I wanted to come back for a longer visit. We stayed for a full 5 nights this time around and it went by so quickly. Kathy was so wonderful to work with and she always was easy to contact if we needed her. The accommodations were excellent and very comfortable to relax in after a long day of playing! The home has that old charm and we absolutely loved that the wood used to refurbish the home was from a ship wreck. That added extra charm to an already beautiful, amazing cottage. We rented a golf cart when we arrived and I would definitely recommend this. We also rented a bike and that was fun to ride around the island as well but the golf cart was a must have and so much fun! We explored the island's back roads by golf cart daily, esp in the morning and evenings when we returned from our daily adventures, which included driving out on the beautiful beaches, finding some fun fishing holes where I caught some of the largest flounders all season and taking a sailing charter out for my Birthday! My favorite part of the vacation though was spending time on the quaint front porch, rocking in the purple swing and rocking chairs. We spent a lot of time out there having coffee or cocktails, playing the guitar and just spending great family time chatting it up, laughing and creating lasting memories. It was fun speaking to other visitors walking by as well as the locals. Everyone was so nice and friendly and that made the visit even that much better. Kathy certainly has a treasure with her beautiful cottage on Howard St. I already want to come back and spend more time there!!!!! If I could rate this higher than a 5, I certainly would. Thank you Kathy for sharing your piece of heaven with my family!!!!!!! We will definitely be back!!!!!!

Exactly what my Family needed!

Elsie's house is a perfect spot for a small family. From the moment my husband took her bike off it's rack our 6-year old was safely exploring Howard Street. Everything inside was just as described and perfectly comfortable. The owners obviously took much care and consideration in the restoration of this historic property. Each day it seemed we found a new detail to this quaint little house, highlighting its history. The backporch/utility room entrance is a perfect place to enter and leave wet things from the beach after rinsing off with the outdoor shower. A word to the wise....it was not a private shower, but still very helpful for all of the sand. Once inside, the newly renovated bathroom was waiting. I especially appreciated the 2-in-1 shower head which featured a hand shower to get all of the sand off the little ones without a fuss!! A favorite aspect of Ocracoke for our family is the short drive to Ramp 70, 4x4 beach access. We pack for the day and enjoy the gorgeous shoreline with all we need in the back of the family vehicle! For this mid-west family it can't get much better. The evening is then filled with bike rides, dinner, ice cream and watching the sunset from Silver Lake. One evening we took the sunset cruise on the Wilma Lee and enjoyed wonderful stories from Captain Rob about the island, Blackbeard and great island folklore. Another evening's stroll took us to the NCCAT boardwalk for a beautiful and relaxing view. If like us, you find yourself needing to stay "plugged in" I can verify that our family of 4 put the WiFi to the test! A nice feature for those of us who want to check things out online or even let the kids watch a movie or play their favorite games they just can't live without for the week. Thanks to Kathy for her great communication while setting up the rental and emails while there. She even checked the cable company's website for me and found my kids' favorite channel! We will certainly return to Ocracoke and plan ahead so that we might stay at Elsie's House again. Thanks for the glorious vacation rental!

Nostalgic in the most wonderful way!!!

My husband, daughter, and I, travelled from Northern California and rented Elsie's House for the week of the 4th of July, 2014! From the moment we arrived it was like a home away from home! I spent a lot of my time on the porch and a lot of my time in the yard, pushing my daughter in the tree swing. She could have stayed out there all day. Each morning, we sat on the porch, enjoying our coffee and saying good morning to all the people who'd walk down Howard Street. Even in the evenings, we see so many people walking or riding their bikes down the quant little road. The yard is so peaceful and shaded by the most majestic oak trees! Inside, the wood floors are so beautiful and feel nice and cool against your warm feet! The house is wonderfully decorated and we spent some time reading about the history of Ocracoke with all the great books that are available at the house. I think my husband's favorite spot inside was the leather couch! He said he wanted one just like it at home! I loved all the photos and coastal decorations too! Everything inside is updated but still maintains the integrity of the old style house. The king size bed upstairs is very comfortable and there was plenty of drawer space and closest space for our stuff. I slept on the left side of the bed and I could feel the cool air from the air vent each night. My daughter picked the bedroom with the queen size bed and was happy there. The kitchen had everything we needed and while we didn't cook very much, it was nice having a fully stocked Kitchen to make anything we wanted. The location of Elsie's House is probably the best location on Ocracoke! We rented bikes and it so very close to many restaurants and ice cream. Dajio's was our favorite restaurant and we loved, loved, loved there crab chowder...wow!!! We only used our car when we went to the beach. Howard Street is like a step back in time and I loved all the shade. Unfortunately for us, Hurricane Arthur caused our weekly stay to be cut short. Not having lived through a hurricane, we thought it best to move inland. We left after 4 days into our stay, but we will be back and there is no question where we will stay... Elsie's House! This is a perfect place to kick your shoes off, relax and enjoy some lemonade away from the rush of the world. Thank you Kathy and Bob for sharing Elsie's place with all of us!!

Historic Howard Street

When you drive the length of Ocracoke Island, you are driving on the Irvin Garrish Highway. Elsie’s was this man’s home. The history of the island and this house are palpable as you read the many books provided by the owners. All the modern conveniences in what should be a stop on any tour of the island. Heaven on Howard Street

We loved the peace, quiet, and charm of Elsie’s House, which has been beautifully restored. The open kitchen had all you need for cooking and baking, dishwasher, new frig. The beds were super-comfortable. We loved the outdoor shower and spent lots of time on the front porch. It’s a great place to read and have coffee In the morning or wine with friends in the afternoon. The house is centrally located on the most beautiful road on the island. It’s a quick bike ride to restaurants, the beach, the lighthouse; no need for a car. I highly recommend Elsie’s House!

Our first trip to Ocracoke was the year we met in 1981. We fell in love with each other and the island, never thinking we would someday own a home with the dream of someday living there. Currently working in Raleigh with 2 kids to put through college, those dreams are in the future. So for now, we look for folks who also share an appreciation of Ocracoke and would enjoy staying in an island home that truly captures times past. Our hope is that you will feel part of this unique community.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

We first saw this home for sale in 2008 and wondered if we could bring it back to life. It had a deep history, it's foundation built from the shipwrecked timbers of the Old Bateman...but did it have a future? After 3 years of debate and with the generous patience of two sisters who inherited this property from their parents, we made our decision and in 2011 the property became ours. With another year of renovations, the house became a home again in April of 2012. We began renting on a year round basis to an Ocracoke resident, but now we are listing our home for weekly rentals.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

Enjoy the front porch and waving to passersby - the locals will likely tell you that is what they remember best about this house - a friendly place to visit. The friendliness continues out into the village. You can walk or bike anywhere and enjoy leaving your car parked at the house for most or all of your stay.
