Absolutely Lovely

Everything about this stay was lovely!! We couldn’t have been happier with our first trip to Kauai. I would absolutely stay at this home again. The house was spacious, comfortable and super-clean. As to AC, really nearly all the rentals do not have AC. Just isn’t needed. The trade winds make it comfortable as well as plenty of fans. No problem. In fact it’s a nice feeling to bring the outdoors in. The lanai is perfect for relaxing and for eating outdoors. Beautiful tropical foliage and mountains complete with waterfalls make the lanai a destination in itself. Not to mention the fun of seeing a cow and horse or two meandering by.

The owners have thought of everything and more. We had available to us not only a well-stocked kitchen and home, but bikes, snorkels, and boogie boards. Tunnels is a fantastic beach with beautiful mountains and good snorkeling. A huge plus is the short easily walkable distance as there are only about 6 parking places. And biking there and beyond is fun. Not too far down the road is beautiful Limahuli Gardens and Preserve. And at the end of the road, about a mile at the most, is the breathtakingly gorgeous Kalalau Trail. We are walkers and mild hikers, but even though it’s somewhat steep, the first half mile is worth the effort!! We also rode horses to the waterfall in Princeville, which was really nice, and did a boat trip along the Napoli Coast, where you will hopefully see dolphins (we saw 3 pods!) and go into sea caves as well as doing some snorkeling. And we really enjoyed the little Kauai Kunana Goat Dairy.

As to dining, yes it’s fun and beautiful to cook and enjoy the lanai. But we also enjoyed eating out too. We went to probably the nicest restaurant in Hanalei, and that was Bar-acuda. We like the fact that most places to eat are casual, but Bar-acuda is just a little more dressy. The food was very good. Sushi Girl along the road is wonderful and easy. We thought all the dining options were in Hanalei, but we noticed not too far down the road is the Opakapaka Grill and Bar at the Hanalei Colony Resort. We were very pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable that was.

If other reviews have been read, many rave about the owners here. Everything you’ve read is true! They are the perfect blend of gracious hospitality and thoughtfulness along with discretion. They reiterated often that they were available to answer any questions, which we really appreciated. In many ways they went above and beyond.

Amazing

The house was spectacular. It was clean and private. The beach was close and hiking nearby. The town and restaurants were a little of a drive but the house has everything needed to cook your own meals and enjoy the serene beauty.

Like Going Home

We’ve been fortunate to have visited Kauai for decades. Our first trip in 1987 was like your first love, remains always in your heart.

We booked Kaiolohia for close proximity to Tunnels as well as glowing VRBO reviews. Our expectations were truly exceeded. Not just the wonderful property and gorgeous location, but the personable touches that Adam and Kim provided. Little things like the free guidebook you receive prior to arrival. Meeting us directly at the property highway entrance after dark when we had trouble finding the address. Welcome hugs with complimentary cocktails. Help with unloading our luggage. Complimentary growlers. Fresh avocados and herbs from their garden. An invitation to a beach camp fire. A surprise bottle of champagne because they knew it was our 36th anniversary. We thought we already understood the Aloha spirit and Ohana. But we’ve never been received such a lovely welcome as Adam and Kim provided, unreservedly inviting us into their "family" upon arrival. And we’re from South Georgia so we think we know a few things about hospitality. They are passionate about making your vacation magical. They were perfect hosts who knew when to step in with advice and suggestions as only full time, long term residents can do, and yet they sensed when we needed alone time. We enjoyed the time spent with them as much as we enjoyed the magic of the island itself.

The photos and descriptions of the property and location itself are dead accurate. You are isolated in a cocoon of vividly colorful flora and fauna that you may have trouble leaving. The house and natural surroundings seem to flow effortlessly together. This home truly has beauty and character. Modern furnishings and appliances but natural wood flooring and interiors give the feel of traditional Hawaii. Of particular note are the coffee and dining table tops made of thick, solid slabs of wood (Koa, not sure?). Sumptuous bedding. Loved the huge day bed as well! Views from the totally private back lanai towards the mountains looked like something Disney would have designed. Loved the soaking tub as well as the outside dining table handy for breakfast. Plenty of ceiling fans and window shutters for flow-through ventilation (no AC but who needs it?). The private outdoor shower is great for getting the grunge off you and your gear. Both gas and charcoal grills available.

When you visit Adam and Kim at Kaiolohia, you will truly find tranquil seas and peace of mind!

No A/C can ruin your trip!

We rented this home in September 2017. The temperature on average was 85 degrees, RealFeel 95 degrees in Haena. With no A/C this home became too warm to enjoy from about 11:00 am to 9:00 pm. Wish we had realized there was no A/C before we booked this property. Owner needs to invest in some wall A/C units. Also, both back screen doors were in need of major repair. However, we loved the view from the back lanai and the tub on the back lanai. The owners were nice to provide backpacks for hiking and snorkel and beach gear. I really appreciated that.

Réponse du propriétaire: Aloha Leslie, We are deeply saddened that you would review our property based on not having air conditioning. We feel your review is not relevant. The decision to rent our home seems like a lack of communication between you and your husband, Robert. Robert booked this house a year in advance. Our listing with VRBO clearly states that home does not have air conditioning. Yet, your first question upon arrival was “where is the air conditioner control”. We spoke with Robert several times via phone for extended periods of time regarding the amenities of our home. Robert indicated that he had read all the VRBO reviews and loved the feedback and the description of our home. He indicated that on previous trips to Kauai you stayed at the Marriot. He told us that both of you loved the north shore and wanted to stay within walking distance to Tunnels. 99% of the homes on the north shore do not have air conditioning. There is really no need. Our home has ample jalousie windows for cross ventilation from the trade winds. There are ceiling fans in every room plus multiple floor fans. None of our previous guests have expressed an issue with the home being hot. The back lanai sliding glass doors and screen frames are 42 years old and work very well when operated properly….by sliding them left or right. The only previous time the screen door has been off the track is from a guest’s 12 year old son that pushed the screen door off its tracks. Those guests were courteous enough to let us know and we were able to fix it immediately. However, you never mentioned anything to us, and simply dragged the metal door across the wooden lanai gouging the wood surface. We take great pride in our home, and spend lots of time and resources keeping it maintained. Another factor of your review might be that we witnessed you harassing a Federally and Hawaii State protected endangered Monk Seal laying on the beach even though there were signs posted around the seal requiring people to stay outside of the area. We were the 3rd person on the beach to approach you and Robert letting you know that you cannot go near these animals. We were startled when Robert replied that “he was aware, yet rules don’t apply to us”. We encourage all our travelers to take the time to read our house information, and contact us with questions prior to booking our property. We want your experience at our home to be wonderful and your favorite destination on Kauai.

A Gem in paradise

First visit to Kauia. The north shore was just what we hoped for. The home was just perfect for us. Well equipped kitchen. Great to shop at local farmer market and prepare meals with local fish and produce. Our hosts were helpful with giving us good suggestions. The home backs up into a nature preserve so the vista of the mountains was our back view with a quick walk to the beach out front. Lots of privacy. Thank you, Adam and Kim

It was simply amazing!!

The house was beautiful, clean, quiet and a perfect setting with a view of the mountains. Adam and Kim are fantastic hosts, very helpful and kind, and tons of fun!! The house was well equipped with everything you could possibly require to ensure a joyous and comfortable stay. Tunnels beach was very easy to access and in our opinion was the nicest beach on the island. We will definitely be back for our next vacation!!
