St. Augustine has been named, the most welcoming city in the country! St. Augustine has welcomed travelers to its sunny shores for hundreds of years. And now, itâs being recognized as one of the most welcoming cities in the country. St. Augustine presents a wealth of activities, sights, and dining options to explore. Enclosed is a detailed compilation from the previous owner (we're still reviewing it). While lounging on the beautiful nearby beach is tempting, ponder these alternatives for a refreshing change. Whether you're seeking shelter from inclement weather, longing for new vistas, or simply aiming to diversify your itinerary, there's something to suit every taste. Additionally, you'll find excellent restaurant recommendations, convenient grocery store locations, and plenty of kid-friendly activities to make your stay even more memorable.
DOWNTOWN EXPLORING
One of the favorite things you will find is to go explore downtown St. Augustine. It is all very wonderful, and you will enjoy the shops on St. Georgeâs Street, check out The Red Pineapple boutique! Also try to cross King Street and see Aviles Street, there are galleries there and the streets are cobblestone.
You can simply walk into Flagler College from King Street and admire the architecture and the grounds. You could do a guided tour or enjoy wandering yourself. Across the street is the Lightner Museum and it is worth the visit. Every gallery has something unique to offer. If you happen to have a rainy day on your vacation, and you need to pass the time indoors, this is a great option.
If you get a chance, a sailboat ride around the bay is highly recommended. Look up Schooner Freedom Charters and check their availability. The marina is right by O.C. Whiteâs restaurant. This is a massive sailboat, they have been known to let volunteers help with the ropes, kids of all ages will have a blast. You can sail around the bay for two hours and have complimentary wine during your cruise. They also offer sunset cruises as well.
Speaking of wine, the San Sebastian Winery has free tours, as well as St. Augustine Distillery (they are practically next to each other). Learning about them and their processes is interesting and check to see if free cocktails and wine are still available! Above the Distillery is a fun restaurant/bar called The Ice Plant, it has a 1920âs vibe that is different from other bars in the area.
One thing you cannot miss is the Castillo de San Marco, the massive Spanish Fort that marks the edge of downtown. Even if you want to skip paying the entrance fee, it is worth it to simply walk around the entire fort and get a good look at its coquina stone construction. There are plenty of photo ops and a beautiful spot for a picnic, while enjoying the bay breeze! If you have never seen a fort like this, I would recommend you go inside. There are many rooms inside its walls with different purposes, they have done an excellent job showing you how the men worked and lived inside this fort. There is a staircase that goes to the top and you can stand inside the round towers at the top with a breathtaking view. While there you can get an up-close look at the cannons.
If you are here with kids and they need to burn some energy, there is a great park downtown called Project Swing Park that is located behind the public parking garage/visitorâs center. It has fencing all around it and wooden towers, slides, climbing opportunities and swings.
More fun things to do:
The free splash pad at the big pier (St. Johnâs Pier)
Matanzas Inlet to swim (my favorite spot!)
Strolling down Hammock Parkâs boardwalk (walking distance from the condo)
Taking a free boat ride to Fort Matanzas (like a mini version of the big fort downtown)
Old Town Trolley Tours
Red Train Tours
Downtown ghost tour (for older kids)
âMusic by the Seaâ â free concerts on the beach by the pier on select Wednesdays in May, June, August, and September)
âNight of Lightsâ â Mid November through the end of January
The Lighthouse
The Alligator Farm
Fiesta Falls Mini Golf (walking distance from the condo)
Ripleyâs Believe It or Not
Dolphin Boat Tours
Marine Land Dolphin Adventure (I went with my granddaughter, and we had a blast!)
DINING
Beachcombers â The place to go to dine on the beach. It is situated on A Street, in the dunes and has a large âsandboxâ type area where kids can go play, while the adults enjoy beverages, burgers and seafood on the deck.
The Oasis â Just south of the condo and has amazing fried shrimp and patty melts.
Jackâs BBQ â Also on A Street, sit on the bar stools outside and catch the ocean breeze. There are pool tables, a juke box and even a swimming pool at the bar. It is more of a localâs hole-in-the-wall vibe â nothing fancy â but good BBQ and a huge and amazing burger called The Phoenix Burger.
Mango Mangoâs â By A Street, interesting burger options, as well as delicious mahi-mahi sliders.
Beach Diner â A local favorite for breakfast or lunch.
Sea Oats CafĂ© â A more local, hole-in-the-wall diner in the Publix shopping center that has excellent breakfast.
The Kookaburra â The coffee shop! They are molded after Australian coffee shops, so they make âmeat piesâ for breakfast which can sell out quickly. Their coffee beans are so good! They also have an amazing cup of hot cocoa. There is seating inside and, on the deck outside, but try wandering to the very back. It is a secluded area where you will be surrounded by palm trees and not many people realize there are picnic tables back there.
GAS Restaurant â Seriously incredible burgers! It is located on the north end of the island (near the Bridge of Lions). Terrible name for a restaurant but seriously good!
Violaâs Italian Restaurant â For a lot of food with a low price, this is the place. Located south on the island. Their portion sizes are huge! So, if you want a massive plate of pasta (enough to take home for the next meal or two) and a glass of red wine, this is a quiet localâs spot. Also, they have great pizza and calzones.
The Conch House â On the north end of the island, situated on the water called âSalt Runâ (the canal of water that runs by the lighthouse). There is a marina here, and The Conch House has this tiki-hut/birdâs nest type seating that encloses your party and elevates you so you can get a splendid view of the water and the sunset. It is worth the wait to sit in one! There is usually a musician playing to listen to while you wait and baby alligators at the back of the restaurant, which are fun for the kids to see.
Elk House â A great date night restaurant. It is an A-frame building near the south end of the island. There are not a lot of tables that can fit inside, so try to make reservations or go a little early, it is cozy, and their menu is very intriguing.
Harryâs â This is the place for incredible seafood and a romantic vibe in downtown St. Augustine. It is the first building you see when you cross over the Bridge of Lions. If there are just two of you, see if you can get a balcony seat and watch the sailboats glide under the bridge. They have Cajun-style New Orleans seafood, and everything is delicious, their shrimp and grits are fantastic.
The Tini Martini Bar â Located downtown and has great cocktails and beautiful scenery, right on the bay front. It is just a few doors down from Harryâs, so it is a great spot to start the early evening before dinner. The menu is ALL cocktails, and they have some highly creative ones.
O.C. Whiteâs â This is another downtown seafood spot recommended. It also has a beautiful courtyard overlooking the bay with twinkle lights. Swing by early to put your name on the list because it gets booked up every night.
Athena â A family-owned restaurant in downtown that has delicious authentic Greek food.
Downtown St. Augustine has so many restaurants you cannot go wrong with wandering the streets and randomly choosing a spot.
