Epic view in rustic villa from high up and a world away in Tuscany
The views from this property are breath taking and it’s a great find particularly for big groups who want to hang out at the villa by the pool or roaring fire over big meals each evening. There are a couple of key pointers to know about this place first to ensure it’s right for you. The road to it is very windy so a confident and competent driver is key (and perhaps avoid arriving your first day in the dark). It’s also quite secluded with the nearby and tiny village at least a good ten minute uphill walk away part of which is on those bendy roads (so fine in the summer when it’s bright very late but not wise to take in late October when we were there as it gets darker sooner) and another part of the walk is on a forest path which isn’t really wide enough for a stroller. Finally it is very rustic so can get chilly in the evenings (at least at the time of year we were there) - definitely ask them to pre heat the place for a good half day if you’re arriving outside the summer months. If you like your creature comforts you may prefer your own fluffier towels too. We loved the adventure though of staying there and just tucking in in front of the roaring fire and making big dinners each night. Daytime was spent exploring the local villages and towns - Pisa is all spruced up, car free and a real pleasure to potter about. The real gem of our journey was the discovery of the restaurant in Vico Pancellorum - 20 minute drive away but the best meal we all had. A really special place. Back to the house - one last thing, it’s a bit tricky with very young kids given the steep steps up to the front door but besides that they are kitted out with cots and toys for those that do go with kiddos. Everything in the kitchen worked perfectly too as did the washing machine. In all of go back which ultimately says it all.
Thank you Aoife, for taking the time to write this review.
I usually reply to my guests who review, privately but I feel I should perhaps reply here to help other guests make the right choice for their holiday as this is the only review in 20 years that has raised these points.
Le Mura is very much a family house and has welcomed small kids for nearly 20 years and we have seen these kids grow up as they return year after year and indeed we lived in the house when we had a young family.
Le Mura Villa was also featured on the cover of Frommer’s guide “Tuscany, Umbria and Florence with your family” a few years ago with a child going up the stairs. Like any house, children need to be watched and there are stairs and terraces.
The roads in the area are hilly as is the nature of Tuscany but we have had many 8 seaters at the house like the one hired by this group. We had a 5 meter (16 ft) Ferrari this summer arrive without problems so I think it depends on how comfortable you feel.
The walk to the village is 700 meters (0.4 miles), a slow 10 mins stroll, the path is through olive groves not woodland on a very easy path and not steep. Indeed you should be careful on the road just before the village at any time not just on Autumn evenings. The Village Benabbio is in fact quite sprawling with a shop, a pizzeria and restaurant plus a club in the summer. Sadly the top rated restaurant was on vacation during this group’s visit after a hectic summer.
Towels and sheets are indeed usually line dried as we try to be ecological.
We charge for gas heating at cost as stated as it is very expensive in Italy but wood for the fireplace and stoves are free and we always greet late Autumn guests with a roaring fire.
Each group has its own dynamics and we try our best to meet all needs and answer questions as honestly as we can.
We look forward to welcoming these guests back. We are always happy to talk to our guests before they book and answer any questions.
La Mura stay
Celia and Enzo have a beautiful property and are vary gracious hosts. They were extremely helpful in navigating the village and answered all of our questions. The dinner they prepared for my wifes’s 50th Birthday well forever be remembered as one of our fondest memories. I would summarize this as “we were treated like family”. We will remember this experience forever.
Beautiful villa, peaceful setting, amazing views, wonderful hosts
Celia and Enzo were the most attentive hosts! In spite of our flight delay, they graciously met us on property at nearly midnight with groceries for the next morning. Because we arrived after dark and tired, we had no idea what beautiful views we would wake up to the next day. Absolutely amazing!! Quaint villages across the valley, Bagni du Luca near the river down below, and lush greenery outside every window. Benabbio village was a short walk from the villa. We enjoyed dinner at the wonderful restaurant Cavallino Bianco one evening. Another evening Enzo and Celia cooked authentic Italian dishes for us in the villa kitchen. The food was so delicious and the company was superb!
We spent one afternoon in nearby Lucca. There are other activities in the area if you want to drive a bit.
Overall a wonderful experience with this beautiful property and our hosts, who we now call our friends. Thank you, Celia and Enzo!!
A Lovely Villa
We stayed for 5 nights in mid may. The villa is in a secluded location with scenic views but within easy walking distance of Benabbio village which has 2 good restaurants. Florence, Pisa and Lucca within easy reach. Very helpful owners.
wonderful house and hosts
Celia and Enzo were gracious and hospitable. Celia responded to questions throughout our stay -- so, although we had complete privacy, we also had access to a helpful host. This house is a treasure, providing a real feel for the history and landscape of the area; we are grateful to Celia and Enzo for maintaining and sharing it!
Super holiday - glorious views over the mountains
Wonderful traditional Tuscan farmhouse, with a private pool and stunning views over the mountains beyond.
Celia and Enzo were very attentive hosts and extremely helpful at answering any queries, whilst allowing you to enjoy your holiday in peace. Really recommend the fabulous pasta cooking classes!
Property and pool very clean on arrival and were also cleaned well during our stay. Recommend the grocery and meal delivery service on arrival.
Florence is 1.5 hour drive away and highly recommended - you can benefit from Celia and Enzo's local knowledge of where to park in the city centre, etc. Lucca very near, as is Pisa, so lots of high profile attractions to visit. The boys and their Dad loved cycling round the Lucca city walls, whilst the girls went shopping!!
Highly recommend a stay in this beautiful farmhouse in a gorgeous part of Italy.
