There is direct access to the Appalachian Trail (AT) via Hay Rock Trailhead minutes from the house. Within a 30 minute drive, enjoy the most photographed locations of the AT, such as McAfee's Knob, Dragon's Tooth, and the Peaks of Otter. Also nearby, enjoy kayaking or tubing down the James River or rent a boat at Smith Mountain Lake.

Downtown Roanoke is a 20 minute drive with plenty of sites to see, such as: Mill Mountain Zoo, Virginia Museum of Transportation, Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke Pinball Museum, Carvins Cove Natural Reserve, Big Lick Brewing Company, and Downtown Roanoke's Center in the Square.
