We had a great time at the Whitecaps Cottage! Home was very clean, well stocked and comfortable. The view was amazing and we loved listening to the waves as we drifted off to sleep. The host, Kriss, provided clear communication and was super sweet (the flowers and anniversary card were a nice touch!). Hope to come back and visit again!
Our three day stay during Michigan Tech's graduation weekend could not have been more perfect. Wish we'd discovered this gem a little sooner before our grad leaves the area! It would be a great place to come back to again and again, as a base for exploring the Keweenaw peninsula, or as a bright and comfy spot to just stay put and relax. Thanks!
We were looking for a nice place to just get away and relax and this was the perfect place. Itâs so very welcoming and peaceful. Enjoyed mornings watching the sunrise while having coffee by the water. Cottage is beautifully decorated and very welcoming. My husband said this is his favorite one we have stayed at and I couldnât agree more. Location allowed us to explore surrounding dung areas that were all within an hour drive. Hosts were very easy to communicate with and answered all questions. Highly recommend - you wonât be disappointed.
I very much enjoyed my time at this cottage with my childhood friend. We both have very high paced busy lives and it was nice to have a ladies weekend. The cottage is very clean and bright sitting right next to Lake Superior. I will say you will need lots of mosquito spray! Donât bring large wood if you plan on having a campfire and bring camp fire tools like log tongs and pokers. I highly recommend this place!
We stayed at Whitecaps cottage for a week in June. It is a lovely, clean, cozy cottage on the bay. The views are gorgeous!! Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We had a very relaxing week, as soon as we arrived we could feel the pressures of everyday life lift away. The cottage almost screams "relax". It is located in the perfect spot, close to many tourist sights, yet far enough away to enjoy the peaceful beauty of the UP. We went to Copper Harbor, Jampot, and Fort Wilkins one day, then spent 2 days discovering the waterfalls nearby. Bond Falls is a must see!! Everything we needed was provided. Do yourself a favor and take advantage of this lovely , affordable cottage if you want a terrific getaway!!
This is a lovely little cottage with 2 bedrooms and a great room to keep everyone together. There are houses nearby on either side of the cottage, but we never heard a peep from them. The water is clearly viewed and heard from the kitchen, dining room and one of the bedrooms and the sunrises are beautiful. Unfortunately, the higher levels Lake Superior has been experiencing has caused the beach to erode to the point that access to the water is nearly impossible. The grass just ends (and is splitting in places) in a good 10 foot drop to the water that is complete rock. This made any outside time with our 5 and 3 year old boys quite nerve-racking as there is no protection to falling off of the edge. In other words, Lake Superior is there to look at, listen to, but not to touch. The location is great for exploring all that the Keweenaw has to offer as well as the Porcupine Mountains and East to Marquette. Our kids loved the large outdoor playground, Shoots and Ladders, near the canal in Houghton and were enamored by the underground tour and tram ride at the Quincy Mine. Our favorite places are Lake Manganese- the water was warm and shallow and the boys had a blast splashing about and Brunette Park- a fairly small roadside stop on Lake Superior with a gorgeous view and beach for playing. We also had a great time on the beach by Marquette, long and sandy. The frigid temperatures of Lake Superior doesnât seem to bother kids, but Mom is happy just walking along the beach and enjoy the views.
Loved everything about this cottage!!Our host Kriss, was great with communicating and making you feel welcomed!!The cottage has so many windows facing the lake so that even on the cooler days, you could still just look out and enjoy the view! The sunrises are stunning to sit with your coffee and watch come up... a fabulous way to starr the day!! The only downfall to this place is that mother nature has succeeded in taking access to the beach nearly impossible .On that note, I would highly recommend a visit to this cottage!!
We arrived to the most peaceful place! The neighbors were very quiet, the lake was quiet, sometimes. We really loved just watching the lake and it's many moods. Had a few fierce thunderstorms go thru and the as awesome to experience! We brought our kayaks and paddled the lake, then Otter lake and other waters as well. Then we brought out mountain bikes.
We had a wonderful stay at Whitecaps Cottage. We loved being by the water. Kriss was very helpful and extremely responsive. Thank you so much for having us!
Relaxing week vacation stay at a cottage on Lake Superior
We stayed for one week in September at the cottage. We found everything we needed for housekeeping and the location was convenient to a full grocery store and a laundromat. (in regards to well water- we bought a couple gallon $3.00 container of water at the local grocery and stored it in the fridge for drinking). The beds were very comfortable and lots of sitting areas to relax and read. The views of Lake Superior from the house windows and from the shoreline are spectacular- during the day and at night. It has a perfect lounging spot to sit out at night at view the Milky Way. There is not really a 'walking beach'- however with water shoes - this adult easily waded their way along the beach's sandstone shelf and collected several bags of rocks. Whitecaps Cottage is located near Houghton Michigan and we made trips north into Keweenaw County and also headed east to Marquette for the museums and shopping. Plenty of visitor information tour guides are at the cottage to help start your exploring. The house sits on a quiet gravel side road off of the highway. There are a few neighbor houses but the area is quiet and private and the road is flat and long enough for a morning walk. We voted this house as a return house to visit- and we look forward to another relaxing vacation stay on Lake Superior!
I was called to the UP of Michigan for a project and decided to rent a small cabin close to the work. Kriss (owner of the cabin) was really flexible and worked with me on my uncertain end date. The stay was exceptional. Quiet and fantastic back-yard access to the mighty Lake Superior. Definitely will rent this property again if I return to the area!!
We enjoyed a week -- and wished that we booked it for another! Extremely clean and comfortable with a fantastic view of Lake Superior. Perfect location -- close to Houghton! Quiet road allowed for many walks. Highly, highly recommend it!
Ray has a computer science degree from MTU and is employed at a local circuit board manufacturing company. Kriss has degrees in business and elementary education and teaches reading at Houghton Elementary School. We have a lovely teenage daughter!
Skipping stones on the lake. Roasting marshmallows in the fire pit. Falling asleep to the sound of the waves. Relaxing by the electric fireplace in the evening. We have seen several eagles at our property and deer on our road. We love to watch the loons float by with babies on their back!
