Casa Sophia at Alma Del Rio â Eco-Comfort on the Water is a unique and natural riverfront homestay overlooking the Macal River and lush forest canopies often visited by toucans and colorful birds. This charming two-story house is artfully handcrafted and peacefully nested in the surrounding environment, offering a tranquil stay immersed in nature.
Guests staying at Casa Sophia enjoy the full Alma Del Rio river experience, including private river access, a secluded sandy river island with comfortable access (seasonal), private river swimming, and complimentary paddle boards to explore the calm waters of the Macal River.
Guests may also take part in an authentic Maya cooking class, offered on site by local partners and available upon request. This hands-on cultural experience is a signature part of the Alma Del Rio experience and adds a meaningful local connection to the stay.
For relaxation, we can also arrange private massages at the property, allowing guests to fully unwind in the peaceful riverfront setting.
Please note that Casa Sophia, like the rest of Alma Del Rio â Eco-Comfort on the Water, is located on a small residential stretch along the Pine Ridge Road. While surrounded by greenery and river views, it is not isolated jungle, and occasional passing road traffic can be heard. The advantage of this location is easy access to natural attractions, villages, and services within short driving distance.
Casa Sophia is thoughtfully designed over two levels. The upper floor is a half-open living space that serves as the kitchen and lounge area, offering beautiful river views and a relaxed atmosphere for meals, reading, or simply enjoying the breeze. The lower floor can be arranged as two compact bedrooms separated by heavy wooden doors, or opened into a shared two-bed suiteâideal for couples, families, or close friends who enjoy flexible living space.
Guests can enjoy a refreshing rain shower, relax in a hammock on the porch, and follow a short path down to the river for swimming and quiet moments by the water.
Under the large Guanacaste trees, we planted a young food forest and a small herb garden for guest use. Casa Sophia shares the Alma Del Rio property with La Alma, and we have taken great care to ensure maximum privacy between the two houses through distance and dense vegetation. For larger groups, both houses can be rented together as a private riverfront compound.
