Enjoy indoor-outdoor living in our bright, open home... Relax on the lanai overlooking lush vegetation and lava outcrops, smell the fragrant Hawaiian air and listen to the waves crash in the distance. Secluded and quiet--a garden oasis far from the maddening crowd. Open windows allow for trade-wind ventilation throughout the home. Rainwater-harvest for showers/sinks (triple filtered), spring water for drinking in kitchen.
Our house is just a ten minute walk to the dramatic Puna cliffs and two miles from the trailhead to the only non-black sand beach in Puna, Ha'ena/Shipman. It is a 10 mile unpaved drive (Gov't Beach Rd) to the old Kapoho area and our newest black-sand beach (created since 2018 eruption).
The jungalow is located 16 miles from Hilo airport, four miles makai (toward sea) of HWY 130, five miles to nearest mini-market or 8 miles to Pahoa, and 20 to Volcanos National Park. This is a quiet and secluded area., but it is a jungle out there, so be prepared for wild fowl, coqui, gekkos, some insects and rain. The Jungalow is wide open for natural ventilation and trade winds (no air conditioner). Quiet hours are from dusk to dawn. Owners and 2 cats live on property in a separate unit at the back of the property. Two cars maximum. Ring security camera facing driveway.. đ€
This house is perfect for vacationers who are wanting a peaceful retreat in a jungle setting. The garden is gorgeous and the house is meticulously designed for maximum natural light and trade winds flow. Tasteful decor never lets you forget youâre in Hawaii while avoiding a tourist trap feel. Tropical birds and friendly cats on our veranda made it truly magical.
What a beautiful place to stay and relax. Gorgeous garden and the house is beautiful. Host is absolutely wonderful and helpful. He was so kind and messaged back right away. Checked if we needed more water. He lives nearby so he even came to bring us supplies when we needed. Love.the fact that we had everything we needed and even a washer a d dryer! Missing my sweet dog but the cute cats kept me company while i sat in the hammock chairs. We are so totally grateful for such a wonderful host and a lovely home to.stay in while we visited family and see the island. Thank ypu so much for everything.
This was the perfect house for some peace and calm. The home had everything we needed including a few sweet cats to pet outside when we missed our fur babies. We walked to the ocean every morning to take in the amazing views and sound of the crashing waves. There is no question we will be coming back!
Roomy place, nice amenities. We really loved Big Islandopoly! Beautiful plants everywhere. Loved that we could walk to the beach. Excellent communication from/with Steve.
Highly recommend! Steve was very helpful and even brought us flashlights when the power went out. Peaceful, lush and private. There were only two beds and one futon, though. Not two futons but we made do just fine. Great place!
My friend and I really enjoyed our two week stay. It was a private location that was very quiet. We enjoyed watching the birds and other animals from the screened in front deck. Steve the host was easy to contact and lives next door. He will fill your 3 five gallon water bottles when requested. We enjoyed using the propane grill as this was a big money saver and convenient. We have no complaints.
Such a comfortable and lovely place to stay amidst flora and fauna! Two highlights for us were early mornings on the porch hammock and the wonderful selection of books and boardgames. Can't wait to come back again someday!
The property is exactly as described. Remote but comfortable. Stay here to be off the beaten path and be ready to drive a bit to get to any attractions.
Loved this place. Property owner was great. House was beautiful. Super close to cliff walks. Absolutely beautiful. Well-priced. Weâll be staying there again!
Steveâs house is cleaned and looks like the photos. Surrounded by a lovely garden. He responds promptly. We enjoyed our time here.
Stayed 4 nights, 4 guests.
The home was as described. It was clean, beautifully landscaped, and a nice place to return to after a day of hiking and exploring the area. We enjoyed falling asleep to the chorus of frogs and waking up to the roosters. The resident cats helped fill in the void of missing our own pets. Highly recommended!
Overall this is a great place to stay if you are planning your trip to include hiking and exploring. My family would go out and adventure and then come back to rest and play games. The place was cozy and we loved the extra wildlife noises. The beds were super comfy and our communication with the owner could not have been better. The only problems we came to were some updates in the kitchen, some odd consistency in the decor, and the water heat. However, we made due during our short stay and our visits by Goldie the cat made up for everything.
Steve's VRBO house was located in a quiet neighborhood just a 10 minute walk to the ocean where we watched the sunrise while waves crashed onto black rocks. His house had many cozy spots to relax but we especially enjoyed the porch hammock swings and eating breakfast at the sunny porch table. We also liked the open layout of the kitchen, dining room and living room areas for our family food preparation. The house was well located for our daily adventures including hikes at Volcanoes National Park and along the coast to the north of Hilo. We also liked that we were only a half hour drive from the airport and our favorite park near Hilo: Carlsmith Beach Park where we swam and saw a green sea turtle. Our host Steve communicated well with us and supplied everything we needed to make us feel at home.
It was only myself that stayed in the home, but it was wonderful. I love the covered porch, screened in porch, the landscape around the house, and the birds and frogs calling. The house had everything I needed and was in good working order. I did not have to contact Steve about any issues, so I don't have a good idea about how he would respond; however, the fact I didn't have to contact him reflects the quality of care of the property. I was really pleased that he alerted me to the fact that the Kilauea volcano had erupted. I would highly recommend the property.
We really enjoyed our stay at this unique property! The location is tucked into a subdivision with private lots. It is about 4 miles from a main Road, so far from noise and light pollution. The ocean is close enough to hear the waves crashing on the rocks in the distance. There are two houses on the property with a car port in between where we could park. Our favourite part of the house was the screened in porch where we could sit in the evening and listen to the frogs. It was very relaxing with gardens on the property and no other properties in site ( although they weren't far away... Just not visible through the trees and plants). The frogs chirped all night, which we enjoyed... My daughter asked to have her windows closed since she found them a bit loud, but she said she still liked hearing them... Just a bit more muted). There are some roosters in the community that wonder around, so we were awaken early (after 6) each morning, but I thought it just added to the rustic feel. We also enjoyed seeing the stars at night because it was quite dark. The location was about a half hour to Hilo, which was a bit further than I had expected, but manageable.Steve warned us that hot water could take a few minutes to arrive for showers, but I didn't find it a problem.. I am glad he warned us though or I may have thought there was a problem. My daughter really enjoyed the cats on the property. They spent a lot of time on the deck and were friendly.Overall, great stay!
We enjoyed our stay at the Jungalow. It was very quiet compared to several other places we stayed at closer to Hilo (no dogs barking, no car noise, a lot less coquis, and only 1 rooster.) The lanai was a beautiful place to read a book and sip coffee. The futon area off the second bedroom was larger than it seemed in the pictures, and was a perfect place for kids, teens, or those who wanted to watch TV. The house has lots of light too. Our host was very responsive, when needed.
We loved the cats, but had to be sure to keep the doors closed or they enjoyed visiting inside. The property was well-maintained. Our only issue was there is minimal pots, pans, and cooking utensils, so come prepared. (one pot meals worked the best for us.) We would definitely stay here again.
We had a lovely time staying here. The screened in porch was perfect for mosquito free mornings listening to the frogs and chickens greet the day. (Well the frogs run 24/7 but our crew loves their sound. Bring earplugs if you need quiet for sleeping). The kitchen had all the tools we needed to prepare meals. The place uses filtered rainwater and solar heat etc so be prepared for longer waits for hot water. The host had two large jugs of spring water for drinking which tasted lovely. All this was disclosed in the welcome binder at the house which had some great recommendations and clear instruction. The host was extremely responsive and helpful, which we appreciated arriving later than expected in the dark and rain. Mahalo!
