Originally finished in 1836, Elmhyrst is a historic home literally straddling the border of Newport and Middletown. In fact, part of the property is actually in Newport.
The four bedroom, three bathroom property was renovated between 2017 and 2021 with an eye towards preserving and restoring the original architectural details including furniture and art. The property is 4,000 SF.
Town and Country (1949) wrote: âElmhyrst is a flawless example of the chaste Greek revival, rare in Newport, and considered one of the best houses of this style in the state.â
The home has been in the same family for over 100 years and they are thrilled to share it with the world!
This historic home is conveniently located for a Newport visit. It is spacious with lots of rooms for relaxing or gathering. It is climate controlled, clean, and light filled with old shutters for privacy. A great kitchen where we enjoyed morning coffee and setting out our snacks or light meals. Each bedroom is blissfully decorated with antiques and comfortable beds. The property is private and quiet after shopping, dining, touring and celebrations in beautiful Newport.
My family stayed here for two weeks. It blew our expectations out of the water and the property manager was amazing! Would definitely give a 5-star rating all around
The house was wonderful the new renovations to the key areas of the house were great Plenty of room to relax and find a little privacy inside the house if you needed it. Kimberly was great to deal with And I would certainly recommend That you reserve the house for yourself on your next visit Or upcoming visit
Loved the Gilded Age Charm! Well-appointed and comfortable home!
Fabulous restoration of an impressive home yet a true feeling of warmth and comfort. My family loved staying here and enjoying the charm and elegance of years gone by with modern and high-end conveniences. Even the bedding was top notch! We were staying in Middletown for a family wedding and Kimberly could not have been more accommodating. Highly recommend this property for a large family like mine or a girls weekend.
I canât thank Kimberly enough for being one of the best hosts Iâve ever had on vrbo. The house and property was amazing. The house was super clean and just as described. Kimberly was more then accommodating and very helpful. The beds were very comfortable which I was very happy with as most other rentals lack in that area. Would highly recommend this to anyone.
We had a wonderful summer weekend at this beautiful property! The history of the house and intricate details are fascinating and they did a great job refinishing this gem recently. Check-in and check-out was a breeze. We had to contact Kim for a small issue and she responded immediately. I would definitely book this property again in the future!
We had the best girls weekend at Elmhyrst. The check-in property was seamless and the house was the best of both worlds, clean and up to date but also beautifully restored to its orginal character. We had so much fun pretending like we had gone back in time (while still feeling comfortable with central air during a heat wave!). Kimberly was very responsive and attentive and the experience was fantastic. Iâve already recommended it to several friends!
Historic home with intriguing architectural details and period decor. If you are into antiques but also want a modern kitchen and bath, this is the place for you.
Russell Warren, an English architect best known for his Greek revival style, built the home for the wealthy Newport merchant William Vernon (1787-1867). Commissioned in 1833, the Elmhyrst was completed in 1836. Peter Turner Elder, a successful publisher, acquired the property in 1910 and has been in the family ever since.
Rose is Peter's great great granddaughter who now owns the property. Rose lives in NYC with her husband and daughter.
