This genteel old lady was built in 1842 and she has good bones! The house is in the middle of all that historic Nauvoo has to offer, with the added benefit of being across the street from Dollar General and Casey's pizza. As with most old houses, there is one bathroom which is clean and spacious and on the ground floor. All of the furnishings are new. There is a large and inviting living room with plenty of space to spread out. There are three bedrooms - one very large - that are all tastefully furnished and have new mattresses. The biggest bedroom can hold more sleepers if needed. The smallest bedroom (the 'Toblerone' room) is ideal for our littlest guests with its quirky shape and fort-like possibilities. There is an outside deck where you can watch life go by but perhaps not in the winter. There is a laundry room on the main floor. There are two parking spaces at the back. On a more sentimental note, there are some original Nauvoo temple stones incorporated into the building as door lintels and windowsills. A gentle reminder that there is no smoking, vaping, alcohol or drugs permitted. Please do not bring your pets. Please note that this is an old house. The stairs are steep and may not suit people who have stability issues and the bedrooms and single bathroom are not on the same floor.
We enjoyed this lovely home with a lot of charm! The pioneer ownerâs story on the wall was fun to read, too. The location was great and was easy to walk to shops and the one restaurant that was open this time of year. The beds were firm but comfortable and I slept great! The one bathroom was a little tough but we knew that ahead of time so it was ok! It was a nice touch to have body wash, shampoo, dish soap, paper towels, food seasonings, etc supplied. There were a few games and books that my kids enjoyed, too. The only tv was in the living room but we didnât mind. We really enjoyed our stay- thank you!
Great location to visit Nauvoo, old house, but they have done some remodeling to compensate in a lot of the house. Excellent location within Nauvoo as well.
We loved our stay here! Perfect home to stay in while visiting Nauvoo. It was clean, beds were very comfortable and overall just a great experience. We would definitely stay here again!
Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends. Plenty of space for our group of 4 adults and 3 kids. Felt like home away from home. Easy access to Dollar General and Caseyâs and walking distance to the temple.
I loved staying at this house. It was a historic house with really nice updates inside. The house was as described and it was very clean. I appreciated all the info the host supplied before we came. They gave eating info and where to buy groceries. The neighborhood felt safe and would stay here again.
We had a wonderful stay very clean. The only issue it was a little warm down stairs especially when cooking in the kitchen. Upstairs was great with the window A/C in each room keeping us cool. Slept like a baby. So close to Nauvoo. Great time
Thank you for providing such a great place to stay! The house was exceptionally clean. The beds and bedrooms were comfortable and more than plenty for our family. Everything that we needed was provided for a comfortable and easy stay! It was nice to be in Nauvoo with only a few minutes drive to historic downtown. The Caseyâs and Dollar General across the street were convenient. It was fun to learn about the history of the home. The house added to the wonderful experience we had in Nauvoo.
Nicely furnished and decorated with new fixtures and appliances. 1800âs charm with modern convenience. Stayed for a week with family and enjoyed all the Nauvoo sights and history. Location is close to everything. I would not hesitate to stay there again.
It was a beautiful property, clean, although the front deck could have been weeded. The weeds were growing through the deck. Apart from that, it was a beautiful house. It was clean and had everything needed to stay comfortably. Including a pack n play.
Our host was wonderfully communicative and provided great advice and suggestions. The home was ready for our arrival with air conditioning running and a cool home greeted us on an otherwise hot and humid day.
We would definitely book this property again.
We were only in town for a couple of nights and had a uniquely fun experience in Nauvoo. Beds were firm, but not uncomfortable. Kitchen was sparsely stocked with pans but doable for a meal for 6. We were warned about the lack of grocery stores in Nauvoo and planned accordingly. Overall we enjoyed the quirkiness of multiple additions to a charming old house.
This spacious house is set right along the main hwy running through town. It has so much character and is such a charming rental.
Old houses always have their issues due to their age, but with knowing that you can just settle in and make yourself at home for your stay.
This property was clean and well maintained. It is across the street from groceries and gas, and close to other properties such as the Nauvoo temple. The stairs are historic and vintage, so you need to be careful on them. Suggest re-attaching the top of the stair rail for safety. It was loose.
Kitchen is big, access is easy,
Stairs are old-school and steep just like the pioneer homes, so be careful.
It is a lot roomier than the pictures depict! It was a comfortable sleep and the AC works well! We would stay again!
We couldn't turn down the opportunity to stay in a truly historic home and even researched the original owner, Joseph Horne, Jr and learned about his life. I was afraid there wouldn't be enough beds, but there were plenty, with the Murphy bed downstairs and trundle bed upstairs. Our bed was so comfortable! The house was close to pizza, groceries, frozen yogurt and close enough to the Nauvoo temple that we walked down to it every evening at sunset.
We loved staying in this home! It was a great size, with a good location in Nauvoo. My favorite thing were all the little things throughout the house that made this feel like a home. Things like cotton balls and shampoo in the bathroom, to an iron and laundry detergent by the washing machine, to pancake mix in the kitchen, were all the tiny things that most rental houses lack, but this home had. Thank you for making this house feel like home for is.
Home is nicely kept. The only thing we didn't like was that the bedrooms are all upstairs. This is less than ideal for midnight bathroom visits up and down old squeaky stairs. They do have one downstairs bed option but the beds upstairs are much nicer. Also one bathroom is tough for 6 people but we knew what we were getting with an old house. There is a Caseys right across the street which is nice for a quick cup of coffee or breakfast sandwich. Nauvoo is a very quiet town. There is some neat history here if you are into old houses! The host was very responsive, overall nice place.
I am originally Italian but confuse many because I grew up in England and then moved to the USA when I married the ever lovely and evergreen Larry. Five children and 3 dogs later, we are almost empty nesters, and are moving into a different phase of our lives. We have sold our little farm in Oregon, and have moved to Nauvoo full time. After visiting, I realized that these were my people. I bought a house, and then another - one to live in and one to rent out. We are local so can usually handle issues in real time.
Why this property? Well Nauvoo is the short answer. And then there is the river and the farming community and the fact that everyone is on first name terms. Mostly it is a peaceful and calm place that is full of great beauty. This home is in the process of emerging butterfly-like from its neglected cocoon. It really does have great bones so watch this space as it emerges!
It is what I consider walking distance to all the lovely historical bits with the added benefit of being across the road from the Dollar General or Casey's for when you have to satisfy an uncontrollable ice cream craving. For an old house it is very spacious- nothing pokey here - so you really can spread out and find a corner to yourself to read or catch up on email or knit or whatever your heart desires when you have a bit of down time.
