Lovely house, the whole family enjoyed it.
Pro's: Great location near tunnels beach and lush surroundings, nice neighbors. Nice home layout and great lanai and family room, perfect for catching up on reading while listening to the ocean, no road noise because one block separation. Master bedroom and family room facing the ocean was nice with two rooms in back for guests facing mountain and gardens. Cons: The master bathroom lacks a door lock, whereas all the other bathrooms had locks, never can understand this set up, a nagging annoyance to an otherwise perfect home.
Thank you for letting us know! We will correct this immediately!
Great family getaway!
This is the perfect vacation spot if you are looking to just relax and not feel the need to schedule a ton of Tourist activities or high-end shopping, Although, there is plenty of those activities nearby to be had if that is your desire. Our Haena plantation house was a great setup for us to bring our daughter, her husband and 2 grandchildren! There is a nice sized yard for the kids to play in and created a soft barrier between them and the open beach and ocean. The beach is pristine and not populated at all... at least was our experience for 8 days. The views of the ocean and lush green hillsides are magical!
We shopped for groceries prior to our drive from south side to north and made many meals in the well appointed kitchen, which saves a lot of $$ verses eating out. That being said, we did enjoy a couple meals at nearby (walking distance) Opakapaka Grill and in Hanalei just a short 15 minute drive to the East.
The drive in and out of Haena is an adventure and very scenic, which I love! A couple one lane bridges to traverse and a few switchbacks, but so so gorgeous!
We were looking forward to experiencing the snorkeling out front of our property and at Tunnels Beach just a short walk to the West, but the ocean swells made the conditions difficult to do so. We did have fun boogie boarding out front a few times and a couple local kids were there showing off their skills as well! I should mention that the property had a storage room that housed a few boogie boards, snorkel and fins, beach chairs and umbrellas, a couple coolers, and beach toys for kids. A bonus to not have to rent or buy those items!!
We had read about the destructive rains that washed away the roads a couple years ago, but we had no problems getting back and forth as needed. There were some crews doing road work and fortifying the hillsides in the area, but the delays were minimal if you time it right.
Didn't make it to Kee Beach or Haena State Park as we wanted to. I have read about the Botanical Gardens and great hikes in that area, but honestly we just really enjoyed the beach and water just a few yards in front of our home.
Property managers, Ginny and her husband, were great to work with. Instructions for getting into the home and checking out were a breeze. We communicated by text as needed and they were responsive.
The only drawback to this location was we should have stayed 2 weeks!! We will next time!! Highly recommend it for a family vacation!
amazing house and beach!
The house was absolutely amazing!! The beach was steps from house where we found boogie boards, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, etc!!! The house was very clean and felt like home! Jenny the property manager went up and beyond to help us our stay the best possible!!! We are a family of 6 and had all the room we needed! Most amazing part is listening to the waves crash while laying in bed at night!! ❤️🏝
An enchanting location, though with a beach that was a bit too steep for our use. the house was entirely satisfactory. we would definitely come back here with other children/grandchildren.
Renters beware. The owners took our money and never gave us a code to get into the house. They claimed we would have access to the house by boat because the roads were shut down and they never provided us access to the house. They kept over $13,000 of our money and never provided a place for us to stay. In addition they never gave us back the refundable damage deposit or the housekeeping deposit ($2,125 total). You are better off renting from another house owner.
Aloha. On April 14, 2018, the north shore of Kauai was struck without warning by a 500 year rain event that dropped 49 inches of water in 24 hours and which caused multiple landslides that cut off the highway to the rental house. The County of Kauai closed the area off immediately to give the road crews time to clear the highway of debris and to give the local residents time to clean up and repair their homes from the severe flood waters. The County also asked that all vacation rental guests not attempt to access the area via boat or any other means since efforts to stabilize the community were in progress. Even though the home sustained no damage from the weather event we honored the communities need to rebuild.
All of our guests receive our Environmental Disclosure about Hawaii being prone to flooding, tsunamies, hurricanes, etc. and our recommendation to purchase travel insurance when traveling here. All of our guests are also made aware of our no refund policy in cases of natural disasters and each guest has to agree to the policies in order to complete the reservation process.
This disaster has been devastating for many of our local families with children who have lost everything and who are still facing hardships rebuilding from this flood. To this day, the Hawaii Department of Transportation personel are still hard at work night and day to complete the millions of dollars of necessary repairs to the highway which they anticipate will be open to the public November 1, 2018.
For many years we have provided a premier beach vacation experience and have many return guests that come year after year. We look foward to that time in the future when when we can welcome guests back to this wonderful beach house. Mahalo nui loa
Tranquil house in a gorgeous setting
My husband and I spent a lovely week at Makua Kai with our two young daughters and my parents. The location of the house can't be beat. It's right on the beach on the lush and beautiful North Shore in the town of Ha'ena. Although Ha'ena is close to the end of the road and far from other areas of the island, it's our favorite place to stay in Kaua'i. At Makua Kai, we loved the covered front porch, with its view of the ocean framed perfectly by trees. We spent many happy hours on the porch eating breakfast, watching rain storms move through, and reading in the comfortable lounge chairs. (Note for families with crawling babies or wandering toddlers: there's a set of stairs connected directly to the deck that could be closed off with a baby gate with some advance planning.)
Tunnels Beach with its amazing snorkeling is walkable if you turn left down the beach out of the house. We enjoyed strolling to Tunnels around sunset for the beautiful skies to the west. We were lucky enough to see a couple of endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals resting on the sand one evening.
The interior of the house is nicely appointed in island style, with comfortable furniture and beds, high ceilings, and pleasant spaces throughout. The master bedroom is wonderful - on the oceanfront side of the house, it enjoys the same ocean views and sounds as the deck. The other two bedrooms on the back (non-oceanfront) side of the house are also very nice, but have smaller beds (both doubles, I believe) and share a bathroom. For multiple couples staying in the house, this is a factor to consider beforehand; one couple will end up with a substantially nicer bedroom and bigger bed than the others.
The house is very well equipped with sand toys for the kiddos, beach chairs, beach towels, and other items you might need. The grounds, including the front yard shared with the sister house next door, are immaculately maintained and full of lovely native vegetation.
Overall, we had an amazing week of beaches, snorkeling, hiking, and relaxation at Makua Kai. We look forward to returning!
