My family and another family stayed at the Bear in the Woods house for a weekend while attending a wedding nearby. The home was wonderful - incredibly clean, comfortable, and everything we needed (and didn't know we needed!) was there. The sleeping options allowed us plenty of space for two sets of parents and two sets of kids, with blankets and pillows to spare.
The only challenge was that the beautiful staircase and giant master bedroom were so enticing to our little ones that we did a lot of chasing toddlers. Next time, I'd bring a portable baby gate :)
We spent the Christmas holiday at this property and could not have selected a better home. It was beautifully decorated, very spacious and well appointed. We did a good bit of cooking and the kitchen had absolutely everything you need- even crock pots and high end cutlery.
It was a white (and very cold!) Christmas but we were very cozy inside. The heating and Wi-Fi worked perfectly despite the negative temperatures outside. The property is about 2.5 miles off of the main road with a fairly steep driveway, but the access road and driveway were plowed and well maintained. After reading one of the reviews, we were concerned we wouldnât make it up the driveway but we managed it even with the ice and snow (without a four wheel drive).
The property is pet friendly and our dogs had the best time playing in the snow and woods. The house has a mud room, which was perfect for cleaning the dogs off and setting up their kennels.
I would love to see the property in the summer and fall. It must be spectacular! We will definitely stay here again and would highly recommend this home.
If you Want a Remote Get Away - Stay @ "Bear in the Woods"
It was a lovely setting, in the woods, but a little far from Cumberland, where we were going to attend Delfest (it got cancelled). Its a very comfortable house - unfortunately the dishwasher DID NOT WORK. Also the directions from the management co. need to be updated. Taking exit 24 off of Interstate 68 is much better than taking exit 22. Also - the directions for taking care of the trash need to be amended. We took the trash and recycling to the nearby garbage collection area. There is no mention in the directions (Notebook with information about the house) that you need to pay for disposal (we ended up having to pay ourselves). One Dollar per bag. (We did put one orange fifty cent sticker on each garbage bag - little did we know it costs $1.00/bag of trash. We ended up trashing our recycleables (and had to pay for the 3 bags to go into the trash container) because they needed to be separated out (paper, metal, plastic, etc) and we did not have time to do this. It would be nice if little details like this were specifically spelled out in the Instruction Notebook that we found on the kitchen counter. We did enjoy the house - thought the kitchen was very well stocked with pots and pans and pretty much anything you would need for cooking. Kudos to the owners for that!!!
No bedroom door was a detail I wish we had been aware of before reserving
Overall it was a pretty nice visit. One thing that that would be good to add to the property description is that the upstairs master bedroom is an open loft room.... so there is no door. ALL sounds travels upstairs and is amplified by the vaulted wood ceilings. Luckily the closet was huge and empty so we were able to put our daughters pack n play in there so the noise from below didnât wake her up at night and during naps. It did make it impossible for us to sleep past 6:30/7:00 when our friends youngest child woke up every morning and watching tv at night was awful as the sound was VERY loud upstairs yet those watching tv could hardly hear it. No joke, it was movie theatre loud up there and I was told the next morning it was so quiet for them they could hardly hear the dialogue. There wasnât a regular drip coffee maker so we werenât able to make coffee with the coffee and filters we brought. There is a Keurig but for the length of our stay it wasnât worth buying pods once we discovered the photos/listing were apparently a bit outdated and the drip coffee wasnât there anymore. The interactions with the rental company werenât my favorite and the directions coming from the east werenât accurate as the exit has had some work done to it and things are apparently different. Something for them to consider updating perhaps.
The location and seclusion was exactly what we wanted and had there been a door on our bedroom or if it had only our family it would have been very relaxing and wonderful. Just something to consider for small groups like two families or couples possibly wanting/needing that privacy like we did. Being kept up by the tv at night and then not having much needed coffee after being woken up early overshadowed how lovely this home really seems to be. We did stay one day longer than our friends and that helped us see just how nice it is. We would absolutely return again... just with a slightly different game plan and with just our family.
The house was beautiful. They are serious about needing 4 wheel drive that driveway was a killer. The house was really nice but the mattressâs are very hard.
what a fabulous house, thoroughly enjoyed the peace and quiet. got a chance to to go hiking in some of the surrounding parks. did go to a very good restaurant, the hen house. good food fantastic bread, bought some home with us..
the nice part about the house was that we were able to bring our dogs.
did have a little problem with friday night kids looking to party, very loud music as they approached the driveway. had to walk down the driveway to make it known that there was someone in the house.
My wife, two dogs, and I absolutely loved this house! We wanted to escape the city for a nice romantic anniversary getaway and found this absolutely beautiful house in Western Maryland. The house was clean and well stocked with firewood, the kitchen was absolutely amazing, which allowed us to cook some delicious dinners, and the seclusion was exactly what we were hoping for! We are definitely hoping to come back to visit for a longer stay in the future.
