North Shore Getaway

This house was in the perfect location for us. We wanted a slower pace than Waikiki and we found it here. The house in Waialua was in a quiet neighborhood and just a short bike ride to the fun town of Haleiwa. Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay (for rock jumping and swimming), diving with sharks, and ziplining at Climbworks are just a few things within a 15 minute drive on beautiful back roads. The house is open and comfortable and the kitchen well appointed for our group of six. The beds were comfortable and the in bedroom AC units worked well. There were plenty of amenities including kayaks, beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, sand toys, snorkel gear, and even various pairs of water shoes. We had a great week on the island and would consider renting this home again.

Wailua Retreat, August 2010

We spent 11 days / 12 nights at the Wailua Retreat August 11 through 22. Overall, the property was very well maintained, very clean and had almost everything one would want for a beach-based vacation. The location has its pros and cons. For pros, you are right on the beach, which was never busy, in fact deserted on occasion, and the views are just beautiful; you get both sunrise and sunset, each of which is idyllic. You are very close to Haleiwa, Wailua and, essentially deserted beaches, such as Mokuleia some 4 miles to the West. Waimea and Sunset are just up the road toward Turtle Bay, so, overall 5/5 for proximity. For cons, the beach is OK, the sand is a little harder to walk on than, say, Kailua / Lanikai, and you can't really swim directly out front without water shoes as the coral is right underfoot about 5-10 feet from the edge. If you wander 100 yards in either direction, there is a bit more swim-able beach. The view from the Lanai is great, although the hedges in front of the house takes some of the view of the beach away, which would have been nice to keep an eye on our son. The house itself is beautiful and very peaceful; the A/C worked very well at night in the bedrooms and the breeze from the prevailing winds blew through the main areas as well as the lanai. The hot tub downstairs was great, we used it 1-2 times per day, depending on where we were. We mostly ate at the house, using the trucks for dinner (best shrimp = Mackey's; best Thai = Opal) or BBQ-ing on the lanai. It was nice to have a kayak, although it did take on water (the stoppers seemed to be missing), so we didn't use it much after the first few days. Everything else was in working order; we did have the gas go empty on the driers, but that was fixed promptly by Jamie who manages the property (thanks Jamie!!), no other issues. Plenty of kitchen utensils, spices, etc, although maybe a little too much stuff left by others. Although this will seem very trivial, we would recommend that the windows be cleaned since they are so dominant in the house and the view is so striking. Lastly, the house did smell musty when we first got there, but that dissipated quickly after all the windows were opened. We saw many turtles (if you want to see more go North to Papailoa Beach [aka LOST beach], not Turtle Beach which is crowded). Overall, we had a beautiful, peaceful stay at the house and would most certainly recommend to others

Amazing view

It was wonderful. But the best part was the view, the walks on the beach, watching whales jump while sitting on the deck, seeing turtles while going for walks on the beach and going to sleep listening to the waves at night. I love the North Shore so the location was perfect. I would stay again in a heartbeat.

Everything you need and more

This home was a real treat for our first trip to Hawaii. We are so glad we chose to stay on the more laid back North Shore. If you are worried about renting this home vs. staying in a big hotel, don't be, you won't regret it. The home had everything we needed to enjoy the area. Nearly private beach, with the occasional turtle sun bathing with you. Very large home with a million dollar view, AC in the bedrooms, great selection of books to read, all of the beach gear you could ever need. It was remarkably easy to get to all parts of the Island with our rental car. We will be sure to try and stay here again in the future.

Amazing House Amazing Location Awesome Management

We had a wonderful stay for 10 days at this beachfront property. We were not knowledgeable about Oahu at the time we booked this property, so we were a bit nervous about whether we knew what we were doing. That ultimately didn't matter because the property manager (Jamie) did an awesome job having everything ready, and she is extremely easy to get in touch with as needed during the stay (we didn't really have much of a need to though). House was beautiful. House was very clean. We were able to travel the entire island during our stay, and we feel comfortable that we chose one of the very best houses to stay in. Very comfortable for a family of 5 (or more). The AC worked awesome in the bedrooms at night. Anyone considering staying at a home (as opposed to a resort) should feel confident this is a top notch choice. Beach was awesome. The hot tub is extremely well maintained and clean (we used it every day). Short distance to lots of restaurants and a great bakery in the morning. Awesome location to access all the north shore beaches. Easy to get to every place on the island. If you have any concerns about renting a home vs staying at a hotel, don't worry... Jamie will take care of everything. She is extremely professional and responsive. We have amazing memories and wonderful pictures that will last the rest of our lives. My kids (12, 14 and 16) had an awesome trip. The house offered them some privacy when they wanted it (as compared to a resort/hotel). We hope to get back in the future!!

Better than the photos!

We recently spent a week staying at Jamie's property and it was so much better than we expected. The area was nice and quiet, steps from the beach. The weather wasn't the best during our stay, a little windy, but we watched some amazing sunsets from the balcony. The house was clean and well furnished. It was much bigger than we expected. The photos didn't do the place justice. We had 6 adults staying. The bedrooms were massive and two of them had ensuites. It was really nice to have a few drinks in the spa. The neighbourhood also felt very safe and was perfect distance to the local town. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Great location, private house for family of 6

Writing this review 2 years later (sorry), but was back on North Shore recently at an "okay" place, but not as great as this house was. The diff motivated me to finally write, even if briefly. If I could retire at this house, I would be lucky.

Waialua Retreat, Indeed!

We spent 12 nights at this property and every minute of that stay was exceptional. I am sure I will not be able to convey the level of our joy and satisfaction, but in a word, it was total. Our experience began with communications with Jamie and she was professional and friendly as we planned our vacation. She was quick to respond to our queries before we committed and remained extremely helpful throughout our stay. We arrived to a spotless house that was more than the beautiful pictures conveyed. The three bedrooms were ideally set up for our party of seven - mom, dad, daughter, son and his wife and their two children – and the bedroom air conditioning was very welcome during the hottest period of this summer. Every bed was comfortable and the three full bathrooms a blessing. The large open space suited us perfectly, the kitchen was well equipped and we took most of our stay-at-home meals on the covered deck where we enjoyed the magnificent view and the soothing breeze. We made liberal use of the excellent barbecue, but also took advantage of the range of dining options available within a few minute’s drive. Our go to grocery store was Foodland Pupukea, a 20 minute drive, but great selection and fair prices with a super deli counter. The beach behind the house is everything people have written about in reviews and we have never enjoyed the ocean so much. Our seven-year-old loved it and the surf was never too strong for her to handle. As we drove along the North Shore and saw the struggles others were having in finding parking close to a crowded beach we appreciated having paradise in our backyard even more. All of the beach equipment was as advertised and we wanted for nothing. We read a lot about traffic on Oahu while we were arranging our trip, but with a little planning this property was well situated for every activity we wanted to experience, from the Polynesian Cultural Center to downtown Honolulu. This property is in a quiet, safe, well maintained neighborhood with a beach in the backyard and views befitting a travel poster. Everything about it is first class and we can’t thank the owners enough for making it available to us. We loved Oahu and if we are lucky enough to return, this is the first property we will check out.

Location! Location! Location!

This was our third trip to the North Shore and by far our favorite home to stay in. Jamie was both accommodating and made us feel assured that everything for our stay was taken care of. Waialua Retreat is a treasure. The perfect location to explore and relax. It's far enough from the crowds to have your own private family vacation but close enough to activities, great food and entertainment. The house is beautiful and when you walk out the back door your a handful of steps from the beach! We made good use of the kayaks, jacuzzi and beach supplies. There's everything a family needs to enjoy Oahu. Can't wait for our next stay.

Seek Wailua Retreat and find the Aloha Spirit

Waialua Retreat (WR) is exactly as advertised, from amenities to location, everything that is listed is available and in fine repair. If some thing is lacking, say a black toner ink cartridge for the printer to print your boarding passes, Jamie, the manager, will quickly resolve the issue. As much as the property is a gem, the same can be said for Jamie, always timely with communication and very attention to detail oriented. Mahalo, Jamie! The beach, which you will largely have all to yourself, is good for snorkeling and kayaking, especailly earlier in the day before the winds and surf kick up. Seeing turtles, both in the water and basking on the beach, is a given-turtles were everywhere. We swam with 1-3 turtles in the same spot every morning. The spot is located a short walk up the beach by turning left at the beach and entering the water abeam the first street light pole you see. Swim out until the reef falls away to sand and get ready for turtles and plenty of tropical fish. Stocking up on groceries before passing Mililani is the logical thing to do, but we just wanted to see the surf after a long and frustrating day of travel-avoid United! The closest grocery store is Malama market in Haleiwa. The Foodland by 3 Tables Beach has a better selection overall and fresh fish, try the tombo ahi, for grilling back at WR. For military, Schofield Barracks is 8 miles away and has a large commissary, BX, and ITT all in the same parking lot. The commissary is 100% ID check so if your dependent ID is out of date, we found Pass and ID to be most accomodating, even without an appointment. We looked at properties from Laie to Waialua before selecting WR. Having experienced getting around the North Shore, I can say with confidience that Waialua was the most laid back, traffic free, authentic Hawaiian experience. I was greatly aided in this property selection by my sister would live on Oahu for five years. She mentioned experiencing the Aloha Spirit many times during the trip in large part due to WR. I would most certainly agree with her. Activities abound but a few I have to mention: Snorkling-3 tables (nice beach/shade trees) and sharks cove (no sharks/beach and lots of sharp rocks) Water sport lessons (surfing/paddle board)-Surf n Sea Fresh fruit-stand across from Waialua Elementary, Sat mornings, try the Waialua Sugar Mill (also stop for souveniers and locally grown coffee) Bakery-Paalaa Kai (Sweet bread/malasadas) Must see-Ka'ena Beach (sunset!)

A guest from Richmond, VA

We returned last night from a 2 week stay, starting the middle of July 2015. There were seven family members in all, which included 4 adult children. We had an awesome time!!! Our new home away from home in paradise! There was plenty of room in the house with 3 comfortable air conditioned bedrooms and yes, plenty of linens, pillows, blankets, beach towels and bath towels. The extra amenities throughout the house were plentiful and well thought out. Spices in the kitchen, lots of dishes and utensils. Plenty of outside gear for having fun at the beach. A great Weber grill on the lanai, a spectacular view of the ocean and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, with an occasional rainbow at the end of the day. Quiet & private location was convenient to many world famous beaches and places to explore. Kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing right outside the back gate was a wonderful surprise. Loved swimming with the turtles every morning! Would not hesitate to recommend to family and friends. We hope to get back again very soon.

Waialua Retreat review

We recently returned from our 2nd stay at this wonderful vacation home in paradise. And that is exactly how you feel when you're here...comfy at your own home in paradise! Our 1st vacation stay was in 2012, and this beautiful home still has all the conveniences you would want, and then some. Kayaks & life vests, snorkeling gear, a hot tub, hammocks, BBQ grill, a grassy back yard, comfy beds, plenty of pillows & blankets, air conditioning in the bedrooms, etc., etc., etc. This home is extremely clean, kept-up and cared for...and it shows inside and out. You would think that the owner lived here all the time. Because the house is in a residential neighborhood, the beach (which is about 30 steps from the deck) is almost like your own private beach...you're not sharing it with hundreds of other people like when you stay at an expensive & tiny one bedroom hotel in Waikiki. The North Shore is quiet and clean, with plenty to do. Art galleries, restaurants, shrimp trucks, grocery & drug stores, souvenirs (sea shells, t-shirts, everything Hawaii), the Polynesian Cultural Center and more. The "Big Wave" shrimp truck (in town) was even featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives...don't miss their great garlic shrimp! We thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the huge deck, watching the whales jump straight-up out of the water, followed by a huge splash...you didn't even need binoculars to see them. Hanging with the sea turtles as the lay on the beach, watching the surfers do their thing, and grilling fresh fish for dinner made for many wonderful days & evenings. There is even a little pizza place (with good pizza, pasta & salads) that has live entertainment on weekends (in the shopping area across from the Old Sugar Mill shopping area). Don't hesitate to book this gem of a vacation spot...you'll love it here! The home is large enough for numerous friends or families to share...without being on top of each other. And a special thanks to Jamie for being there and having everything ready for our arrival. Now all we have to do is figure out when we can schedule our next stay. Mahalo!!!!!!! Great time was had by all

This was our first return to Oahu in 38 years - Wow has the island become even more popular...and congested! Glad we chose the No shore where traffic is more tolerable than Honolulu area. We enjoyed two weeks here and loved every minute of it. Vaulted ceilings in all rooms make house feel bigger than it is, plenty of room for seven adults (we had five plus a small child). Amenities really added to our enjoyment of the No shore, available for our uses were kayaks, new Schwin bicycles (trail to Hale'iwa directly across from cul de sac entrance), boogie boards, snorkeling gear, spare propane for barbecue, and even a terrific reading library with up-to-date hiking advice. These thoughtful touches made us feel the owner cared and our experience was enhanced accordingly. The local property manager was very helpful and responded promptly to all our needs. Only drawback was that it seemed there must have been a dog in the house prior to our visit because my wife experienced her typical allergic reactions to pet hair. Nevertheless, we will return if our travel plans bring us back to this island.

Great family time

We absolutely loved this location! We are a family of 7 (Mom and Dad, married son and his wife and 3 more teen/young adult kids) so the accommodations fit us perfectly! We all settled in and felt at home from the first night. Having arrived after dark we felt like kids on Christmas morning (in July!) waking up the first day and rushing out to see the view, which by the way is spectacular. The kitchen was well equipped and the pay-it-forward aspect of cottage rentals meant there were plenty of condiments, etc. to create a meal with. I would suggest you check the cupboards and fridge before you go shopping. One of the nicest things about Waialua and Hale'iwa is the quaint country feel. The Waialua Sugar Mill is just down the road and Solo is ready with coffee samples and a great sense of humour. They also have the best naturally flavored shaved ice as well as a great collection of island made soaps and souvenirs! The first night we only made it as far as the Hale'iwa Cafe just inside the town. It was the best food! Totally gourmet! We decided to have our final meal there as well and enjoyed the back patio where we saw a rainbow and a sunset in the time we spent laughing with our family around the table. If you are a coffee craver check out the Hale'iwa Coffee house. We made a habit of enjoying a freshly made iced coffee or real fruit smoothie after our busy days out and about. Delicious!! We spent each of our 7 days exploring all around O'ahu and although there were many amazing things to see and experience we were always very happy to go 'home' where there were plenty of showers(3), super comfy beds and air conditioning. The latter was really a life saver for us as we arrived just ahead of Tropical Storm Flossy which made the air very hot and humid and with a couple of us having asthma it was crucial to a good nights sleep. All the extras: kayaks, snorkel gear, beach chairs, laundry room (with 2 dryers!!) and the added details of great bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash in each shower made it feel very personal and welcoming. Very 'aloha'! Our thanks to John and Kathy for sharing their treasure and to Jamie for being so pleasant to deal with. We are looking ahead to when we might hit the North Shore again...for two weeks! If we do we will definitely look forward to staying at Waialua Retreat again. It really does feel like a 'home away from home'.

10++++!!!

"SPECTACULAR" doesn't give enough credit to this wonderful North Shore beach house, it's views and location. We've been to Hawaii over 25 times, and always stayed at the major hotels in Waikiki. Granted, they are nice, but it's just like you're staying downtown of any major city...including an overabundance of people. This spacious beach house is a great place for a vacation get-away. The house is beautifully designed and decorated, fully furnished with everything you probably have in your own home, and situated in a secluded cul-de-sac of a quiet neighborhood. There's even a BBQ grill on the expansive deck that overlooks the ocean, a hot tub, and lots of "toys" for fun in the water. The views of the ocean from the house and deck are unbelievable...and about 30 steps from the deck you're on the beautiful sandy beach/in the ocean! Great place to relax and watch the sea turtles, schools of dolphins, kayakers, surfers, fishermen and others. For the most part, you'll find that there are very few people on the beach, as this is a residential neighborhood...which makes your escape quite private (and romantic if you choose). No more Waikiki hotels for us! The North Shore shopping area is 7 minutes from the house and filled with friendly, family-owned galleries, restaurants(don't miss Macky's Shrimp Truck), gift shops, shave ice stores, a grocery store, drug store, bakery and more to provide you a relaxing vacation. A quick drive from town and you'll be at the Waimea Valley waterfalls and beach park, as well as numerous other beaches. This beach house is a 10+++!!!! A BIG Mahalo(Thank You) to the owners, John & Kathy for sharing their bit of paradise.

Paradise on the Beach!

Best vacation we have had to date! We spent 16 days basking in the sun, kayaking, beachcombing, siteseeing, and just relaxing. The house is beautiful and fully appointed. Can't think of anything that we didn't have at our fingertips. The only thing we needed to make it feel like our own home were our personal photographs. Turtle watching(in the water and on the beach) was so much fun. We even spotted dolphins a few times from the lanai. Close to Haleiwa for shopping and dining. Recommend Mackys for shrimp or further out Giovannis. Also The Crouching Lion is a very nice place for a relaxing meal overlooking the ocean. You have to drive a bit to get there but it is worth the trip. The Bahia fish stew was to die for and if you like steamed clams then this is the place. It is hard to put into words all the wonderful things about this fabulous place. We have only been home 2 days and are planning our next trip back to this beautiful home and our little piece of paradise. Beautiful place and everlasting memories!
