We had a wonderful time at the cabin which was well stocked and had all the amenities of home.Only needed food. Mule deer daily at the waterhole 30 yards from the cabin and a flock of wild turkey.Beautiful scenery with mountain peaks and quaking aspen trees all around. Looking forward to next years vacation being there possibly.
We love the wildlife and tranquility of the area, but the cabin was not clean and the front porch area was overgrown. The ceiling fan doesnât work, nor did the oven because a rock that was supposed to be jammed in the timing mechanism was missing. The owner was great communicating with us and very timely and cooperative when we shortened our stay. We were quickly refunded for days not used.
This lovely, rustic cabin was the perfect getaway for our family of four. We had full days visiting Ridgway, Ouray and Telluride, and enjoyed retreating to the cabin to recharge at the end of the day and ease into our days each morning. Our kids loved exploring. We saw deer, ground squirrels, chipmunks, many birds, a couple of field mice (remember to keep food in cabinets and fridge) and so many stars!
Having a well-stocked kitchen for meals when the drive to the nearest towns was too much was very helpful. The owners provided plenty of linens, detailed instructions for water/stove, wifi, a nice selection of games, and everything was tidy and prepped for our arrival. The dishwasher and washer/dryer made housekeeping convenient too.
Our highlights in the area include:
The Angler Inn in Placerville was tasty and even did takeout for our Friday pizza night. We'd also recommend Thai Paradise, Kate's Place, Cafe Ridgway a la Mode, and Cimarron Coffee Roasters & Books in Ridgway for meals and snacks. A visit to the Ouray Hot Springs is a great way to wind down and soak up the scenery. If you have young kids, the Wilkinson Public Library in Telluride was a cool and comfortable place to relax and play.
We very much enjoyed the cabin! We visited mid/late June and it was beautiful.
Deer outside the cabin every day, quick access to Telluride and beyond, gorgeous views from the property and down the street, very quaint cabin, great for pets.
Some of the other comments reference valid points about VERY MINOR items that you'd expect if you were booking at a hotel. This is a cabin and with that mindset, it met and exceeded expectations. Wade was very helpful on multiple fronts.
Note that I do have Verizon and had very limited access. Other phones had Sprint & ATT, which received relatively good connection, though it didn't have hotspot service so we were without internet.
The location on top of a mesa is really great. Make sure you "stay right" on the switch back road up to the top, especially at night. The view of the stars on the moonless night was awesome and amazing.
My husband walked down the steep path to the pond and saw the beaver lodge.
On the busy road from Ridgway, we saw two different bears in a field on the side of the road.
We really enjoyed using the propane BBQ grill and had no problems with lighting the stove pilot lights.
Only two issues: the shower water temp is inconsistent because it is pump driven, so the hot and cold water surges as you shower (but remember this is on top of a mesa in the middle of nowhere using a well with a pump) and the wi-fi is spotty (tried resetting the router, unplugging it, etc., but never got very strong).
All in all we had a really good experience at the Double G and would stay there again if vacationing near Telluride.
My husband just loved sitting outside and sipping his coffee in the peace and quiet and lovely setting. Lots of birds in the field. Unfortunately, we found there were so many things that needed fixing that we reached the point we wondered what was next. To start off, we had to spend time on the phone with the owner to get the oven to light. You must read his instructions carefully just to figure out how to make the hot water heat. We have stayed in a lot of cabins and expect them to be pretty basic, but this still needs more work. The cabin was superficially clean, but, without going into details, underneath it was not very clean and didn't look like it had been cared for.
As I said, a cute place, but it needs work and some basic serious cleaning.
My husband and I spent four days and three nights up there for fourth of july weekend. We love the location and privacy offered by this place. It is 20-30 miles outside of telluride and 3 miles from the main highway. We saw deers and wild turkeys on the property. They also have a steep trail on the property, which will take you to a creek. The place is very clean and quiet. There is no AC so it can get a little warm in the summer days which you will be spending outside anyways. They used a water pump which is located near the house, so it can pretty loud at night if someone is using the bathroom.
There were at least two things which this place can improve. The stove's pilot light is not working appropriately, requiring you to light the stove manualy with a match prior to cooking. The grill outside is leaking gas when turned on, which prohibit you from using the grill safely. Unfortunately, our concerns were not equally by the owners
We would love to come back to this cabin and refer it to our friends but only after they have fixed what seems to be the essential.
What a wonderful cabin! So warm and homey! The location is spectacular! A quick drive to Ouray or Telluride. We had a wonderful week. So nice to be in the mountains! We were able to cross country ski right out the door, but I'd recomend snow shoes to get down to the creek! It's steep! Just a quick walk up the road leads to even more amazing mountain views and the stars can't be beat! The kitchen was more than adequate - loved the cute old stove. We brought books, movies, and art supplies, but found ourselves enjoying the outdoors more than anything. The hike down was a bit steep and snowy, so bring snow boots if you're going for a winter time trip! What a wonderful place - a beautiful private getaway. My boyfriend, dog, and I miss it already (and we just left this morning!).
