The Neighborhood:
A stay in Marshfield, on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, offers the perfect combination of picturesque village life, beautiful countryside and easy access to some of the region’s most famous destinations. This historic village is full of character, with handsome stone cottages, a wide high street and a welcoming community atmosphere.
Marshfield is well known for its excellent local pubs, ideal for a leisurely lunch or cosy evening meal after a day of exploring. The village also has a thriving Post Office and village shop, which hosts a popular farmers’ market, where you can pick up fresh local produce, artisan treats and handmade goods.
For walkers, the area is a delight. Numerous country walks begin right from the village, taking you through rolling fields, wooded valleys and classic Cotswold scenery. The nearby Cotswold Way National Trail offers spectacular routes with far-reaching views, while cyclists will find plenty of quiet country lanes to explore.
Marshfield is perfectly positioned for visiting both Bath and Bristol, the former around 15 minutes drive and the latter around 20. The World Heritage city of Bath is famous for its Roman Baths, Georgian architecture, independent shops and excellent restaurants. Bristol offers vibrant harbourside attractions, museums, street art and a thriving food scene.
The wider Cotswolds are also within easy reach. Explore charming villages such as Castle Combe, often described as one of England’s prettiest villages, or visit Tetbury, Cirencester and Malmesbury for historic streets, markets and independent boutiques. Nature lovers can enjoy the nearby Westonbirt Arboretum, one of the finest tree collections in the country.
The medieval village of Lacock is around 20 minutes drive away. Steeped in history and owned almost entirely by the National Trust, you'll find timber-framed 13th-century cottages, historic pubs and a 13th-century Abbey. It's also famous for starring as a filming location for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey!
Whether you're enjoying a pint in a traditional village pub, browsing local produce at the farmers’ market, or exploring the beautiful countryside on foot, Marshfield provides a wonderful base for discovering the best of the Cotswolds and beyond.
Getting Around:
For those bringing a vehicle, free on street parking is available in the surrounding streets. Marshfield benefits from great travel connections, being only around 15-20 minutes drive off the M4 into the Cotswolds. London Heathrow is around an hour and half drive, and Bristol airport is around 1 hour.
For those travelling by public transport, the closest train station is in Chippenham, where trains operated by South Western Railway run all the way from London Paddington. It's then around a 20 minute drive to the cottage - both taxis and car hire are available from the station. Kemble station is also a similar distance but is less well serviced by taxis and car hire.
