The Neighborhood:
Neighbourhood Description
Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel) is a small fishing village situated just over three miles south of Penzance. It was once a busy harbour, famous for landing huge catches of Pilchards. The village has kept much of its historic character and today is very popular with visitors during the summer.
The Mousehole Christmas Lights are famous throughout Cornwall and beyond and are put up (and taken down) each year by a dedicated team of volunteers. Tom Bawcockâs Eve (23 December) is always celebrated with great enthusiasm in the village; it celebrates the efforts of Tom Bawcock, the legendary Mousehole fisherman, who is said to have saved the villagers from starvation by going out in a severe storm to fish.
Mousehole is an idyllic village and fishing port with quaint cobbled streets full of bistros and art-galleries. Sit on the harbour and admire views of St Michaelâs Mount or take a short drive to nearby Marazion to walk along the golden sands.
Mousehole is a great community with a fantastic atmosphere, and self catering in Mousehole is effortless. Enjoy harbour views and artisan foods at Mousehole Deli & kitchen, afternoon tea at the Tremayne Tea Room or sit down for an evening meal at 2 Fore Street, a French bistro-style restaurant on Mousehole harbour front. Finish off your evening with a pint of local ale at the Ship Inn, one of the famous St Austell Brewery establishments.
Getting Around:
Bus routes
Youâll find Penzance Bus Station at the bottom of town, near the harbour. From here, you can travel out to local towns and villages like Marazion, St Ives, Landâs End, Newlyn and Mousehole.
In good weather, open top buses travel on the most popular tourist routes around St Ives, Landâs End and Marazion. To check times, visit the First website.
Bike hire
Opt for two wheels to take advantage of the quiet lanes and cycle paths. Bikes can be hired from several spots in and around Penzance, including Penzance Bike Hire from RideOn eBikes, Trinity Yard and Landâs End Cycle Hire in nearby Long Rock.
Or download the "Beryl" app and help yourself to one of the green electric bikes dotted around the town (be sure to check the battery life of the bike you choose before you set off).
Parking
Penzance has several short and long-stay car parks, operated by Cornwall Council. If youâll be travelling around west Cornwall, seven and 14-day Rover tickets are available to buy online and allow you to park in most long-stay car parks for a one-off payment.
Alternatively, you can pay as you go using the Phone and Pay app. To find out more about parking in Penzance, visit the Cornwall Council and the Penzance Town Council websites.
Sailings to the Isles of Scilly
From Penzance Harbour, pop over to the Isles of Scilly: a cluster of Mediterranean-style islands 28 miles off Landâs End. The Scillonian III sails from Easter to November, arriving on the largest island of St Maryâs. If youâre driving to Penzance, you can leave your vehicle securely with Isles of Scilly Parking or Scilly Parking.
Other Things to Note:
The cottage does not come with parking although in our directions description it will tell you where is best to park.
Passageway-
our next-door neighbours have right of access (rarely used) through the passageway via old fishing covenants so please keep access clear and the door to the garden unlocked (internal doors can all be locked).
There is an open fire- always use the fire guard- never leave the fire live when going to bed.
The Net Loft is a fantastic addition to the cottage particularly if travelling with teenagers who want their own space or parents, it features a double room, with separate snug area with TV, sofa, kettle and shower room. Please note the Net Loft has areas with low ceilings so please mind your head.
Interaction with Guests:
We are local and contactable via phone or the airbnb app. Should you need us during your stay we are only 10 minutes away.
