The West Cliff area of Ramsgate is a scenic and historically rich part of this seaside town on the Kent coast. It’s known for its elevated position, offering stunning views over the English Channel and the Royal Harbour, which is the only royal-designated harbour in the UK.
What’s it like?
West Cliff feels a little more tranquil and residential compared to the busier town centre or seafront. The area is lined with Victorian and Georgian townhouses, some converted into apartments, mixed with more modern homes. There's a laid-back charm, especially along the cliffside promenade, which stretches along the top of the cliffs with panoramic sea views.
Key Features:
West Cliff Promenade: A long, open stretch perfect for walks, especially at sunset.
Royal Esplanade: A leafy avenue with period architecture and a peaceful atmosphere.
King George VI Memorial Park: A lovely green space with Italianate gardens and a little café, popular with dog walkers.
Granville Theatre: A small, local theatre right by the seafront (currently closed for redevelopment).
Pegwell Bay Views: At the far western end, you can glimpse the start of the more rugged coastline towards Pegwell Bay.
Vibes:
The whole area has a slightly faded grandeur — you can imagine how posh it must have been in its heyday — but now it feels more chilled and a bit bohemian. It’s a favourite spot for locals to escape the more touristy parts of Ramsgate.
Who would love it?
Walkers and nature lovers
People looking for sea views without the crowds
Those into a bit of local history and architecture
Anyone after a quiet, slower-paced part of Ramsgate
If you're thinking of visiting or moving there, West Cliff has that coastal calm with just the right amount of character.
