Guys Trip

We had a great experience at this property. We essentially used it as base camp to explore all the area has to offer. The property itself has a lot to offer as well. Communication with the owner outstanding. We will be back together and with our families.

Excellent arroyo and mountain views. Kathleen went above and beyond to accommodate us, including showing us around the property and telling us about local trails. Slept 5 adults comfortably. Highly recommended.

Thank you, Scott, for blazing the trail to our property. Although remote, it is a unique experience. Glad your group took time to build a campfire and had a beautiful star lit sky Saturday night. You proved that you can make the beautiful drive to BIg Bend National Park and back to our ranch in a day. Long drive it is, but breathtaking views. Please come again.

Like we died and went to heaven

The house is charming and comfortable. The land is gorgeous in every direction. The sky is just magnificent. We read, hiked, cooked, slept and can't wait to go back and do it again. (We did not miss our internet connection or streaming services one bit.) Our only regret was not booking a longer stay.

Experience the splendid isolation of the desert

Loved staying here. The big sky, the silence, the vistas of the mountains -all made easy by staying in the comfortable and charming house. Kathleen was terrific. Only met her at the end but had many communications during and before our stay. Only regret was not staying there longer than two days. Y

Absolutely magical

My husband and I absolutely enjoyed our stay. The property is stunningly beautiful. It is one of the most peaceful and tranquil places I've been. The hiking was fantastic, 200 acres to explore! The deck was perfect to watch the sunrise, sunset and unbelievable night skies. Kathleen was a perfect host. She was available to answer any questions and assist if needed. We highly recommend.

Amazing Escape

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of this busy life, this is the perfect place. We hiked, read, slept, cooked, and star gazed. We loved this little oasis, away from everything. We saw the Milky Way as clear as I have ever seen it. The stars were amazing. Walking along the arroyo, seeing wild donkeys, all of it was perfect. The house is well stocked and very comfortable. The bed was also comfortable. The owner’s were incredibly helpful and available for questions.

Peace and Relaxation

This property is just breath taking! Was incredibly peaceful, the views and nature that surround are wonderful. We took a family get away and enjoyed every second of being there. Watching the sun rise, to feeding the birds, relaxing painting rock with the kiddos, and taking walks around the trails. We would defiantly come back! The owners communicate very well and we appreciate their willingness to let other experience the beauty their place has to offer! Many thanks!

Amazing!

An amazing experience being so far removed from the city. Wide, WIDE, open spaces, a beautiful property to wander around, and the night sky... just incredible. I was there for three nights and was able to totally check out and be present with the surroundings. I went down to the general store for a bottle of wine and ended up hanging out for two hours talking to Jennifer and a couple of local. Mr Prieto was born and raised in Ruidosa and was full of stories and information about the area. Such a memorable experience and I can’t wait to go back. Thank you for sharing your slice of paradise! A piece of paradise

I’ll probably spend the rest of the year thinking about how I’d rather be at this rental than wherever I am currently. I’ve stayed at several rentals in West Texas, some of which were rather swanky, but this one is by far my favorite. The remote location, about an hour upriver from Presidio, is serene, with all the amenities you need. There’s no cell service and the wifi is limited, making this the perfect emotional recharge spot. From the sunrises and sunsets to the wildlife and flora, you’ll leave here remembering the best of trans-Pecos Texas. Kathleen, the most gracious and courteous host, says she’ll continue to improve the property but no improvements are needed. I’ll definitely return here at least once a year.

Rustic does not mean run down

Place has potential but needs work. I knew it was a mobile home but effort is needed to make it a vrbo site. Hang some pictures; replace or tack up wall trim; do something about the water pressure; have a real grill; if nothing can be done about the flies, warn the guests, if you can do something, do it. Couldn’t enjoy the deck because of constant flies. It could have been cleaner, and the ac needs to be improved. The location is good, the arroyo is great, as was the hiking. But, for God’s sake, invest in the site a little. Hang a flower pot or two We won’t recommend and we won’t return.

This is the first negative review we have received. We live in Alpine and do our best to upgrade…stove, refrigerator, Wash machine all new. Deck recently stained. Comfortable furniture. We even offered our deck for better internet. I did not know about the flies until I arrived just before you. Chinati Hot Springs near us had problems as well from all the rains the past month. Not a fair assessment in your part…it was a regional problem. Too bad you could not say anything positive. There are pictures on the walls and all kitchen supplies for baking and dining. Bought you fresh Keurigs and spices. One does not book a place very remote as ours and expect the Hilton. I gave you a good rating before having the opportunity to see how you left the home. I hope all the check out rules were followed. With your negativity, I am perfectly happy you do not plan to return.

Amazing Views

If you are looking for a posh gold star abode with easy access to everything this isn't the place for you. However, if you are looking for a place to recharge, escape, get in touch with nature and unplug from the hustle and bustle of city life, it's absolutely perfect. Kathleen is prompt to answer any questions and possibly the friendliest person I've ever spoken with. The location is quite remote so prepare accordingly. There is another resort nearby, so don't go thinking you won't possibly encounter another vacationer if out hiking, but the other place isn't huge so it's not like you'll be bothered by a bunch of people if people are what you are wanting to escape. The desert landscape is amazing with mountains and deep arroyos. The desert vegetation is beautiful but true to the saying, if it's in the desert it will poke you. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing if you plan to go off trails, which by the way, are plentiful are much safer. There were some steep inclines that might be difficult for older or disabled individuals, but doable for those that are perhaps not that athletic or physically active on a regular basis. The roads are pretty well maintained but would suggest that one choose the safer route Kathleen suggests. We ventured the other route to sightsee and found that traveling at night or after dark could be a dangerous thing to do since there are steep inclines, and due to the rocky nature, falling rocks or washouts. The house was comfortable, had a few little quirks, but nothing that would prevent me from returning again. Overall, it was relaxing with a super comfy bed and pretty much everything you need in the kitchen and bathrooms. I most enjoyed the wraparound porch with ample seating to view the birds, ground squirrels, rabbits, deer, and two resident javelina that visited each evening which was quite a treat. I would most definitely return to this Chinati retreat because remote and somewhat rugged was exactly what I was looking for. I enjoyed it so much, I didn't want to leave.

Perfect Getaway!

We booked this spot to get a little bit of the Big Bend sites without the crowd. We could also take our dog with us on hikes! The arroyos were perfect to get your steps in and take in the true beauty of nature! We saw javelina pigs, quail and all kinds of other birds. The star gazing was amazing too! We can’t wait to visit again! Kathleen and her family were gracious hosts.

Desert Solitude

We went hoping to see dark lies and lots of stars. Weather didn't cooperate. We are 83 years old and was too hot to walk the property. The quiet solitude was wonderful. The area is awesome. Kathleen was a great host! Enjoyed our stay

Beautiful views, escape from it all kind of place!

We had an amazing time, the views are breathtaking, star gazing is awesome!! Bed was comfortable, plenty of kitchen ware to cook our dinners. Ample sitting area and chairs etc whether you want to get some sun or stay in the shade. The weather was amazing, I was able to get a start on my summer tan. The trails were great, seeing all the birds and plants and flowers made for a great hiking during the day. Can’t wait to go back!!

Wonderful weekend

We truly enjoyed our stay and loved the peaceful days of off the grid! The night skies were fabulous, and we actually observed meteorite go across the sky from west to east! It was incredible!

Chance to Disconnect

what an amazing little slice of texas we didn't even know we'd love! the night sky was my favorite part. our first two nights were so clear that the milky way was visible to the naked eye. no light pollution made for a spectacular show. this time of year, the temps during the day were ideal for hiking and exploring, and the chilly nights were perfect for a campfire. you are truly disconnected out here. there is zero cell reception, and wifi at the guest cabin is spotty. while there is a tv and dvd player, there is no cable tv. while this set up may not be ideal for all, we loved the time to disconnect from technology and spend time with each other. if you need an escape from the hustle and bustle, this is your spot!

I might add that we always welcome guests to access good internet from our porch. As you stated, it is nice to disconnect from TV and internet and just absorb all the beauty and good times together with no sounds or distractions. So glad you enjoyed your time at the retreat. Relaxing

Had a relaxing stay on the property. Enjoyed hiking around and painting rocks. Kathleen was excellent. Bathroom/shower might need to be updated. But overall place is in good condition.

Get away from it all!

Kathleen and Tom's hospitality is evident from the moment you find the property. A beautiful mosaic greets you at the gate. The location is extremely remote and beautiful. If you're looking for a real escape, this is a perfect choice. Finding a place that allows you to wander unfettered on 200 acres down into arroyos and up onto ridges is wonderful. But finding a place where you can enjoy this recreation and relaxation without the sounds of cars or airplanes is as rare as a location can be. We highly recommend this location to everyone looking for a quiet getaway that is as relaxing as it is remote.

Great, Secluded Getaway!

Because of an emergency at home, we were only able to stay one of our two booked nights, but it was amazing! Everything we needed was within the house, the setting was beautiful, and the quietness of the land allowed for true relaxation. We WILL be back.

The great escape

I took my family out here to get away from the business of every day Life. We did spend all of our time together away from distraction like email, cell phone and the social media. The kids and I loved it. The wife and I hadn't spent this much time together in a long while it was nice to be together without plans. The most joy for me was the sheer amount of time we had together as a family. The walks, the rock painting Wich is huge fun for the kids. The knowledge I got to share with my son . It was all just a good time together. I do want to come back here again. Just have to find the time. I appreciate the attentive help Kathleen was . Especially with the directions. If your up for a memorable drive take pinto canyon road. You won't be disappointed. Saves time if your going back to Marfa.

Great Escape to Very Quiet Sacred Place

Sunsets, stars, lightening storms, wildlife, birds, absolute peace and quiet away from it all. Definitely a place to regroup your senses and take some time away. Awesome trails. The owners of this VRBO are fabulous to boot. I highly recommend staying here. Bring you food and water and everything else is provided. You will love the peaceful retreat!

Tom is a GIS Specialist and a singer songwriter who performs locally in Alpine and Terlingua. Kathleen is a dental hygienist and artist. (Oil painting, mosaics and clay work)
We retired to Alpine from San Antonio TX after purchasing the ranch in 2006.
We have 4 grandchildren and 2 very spoiled dogs, Lillie and Dory.
We enjoy sharing our beautiful ranch with visitors and meeting folks from all over the world.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

We purchased the 200 acre ranch back in 2006 even though it was 500 miles from our home in San Antonio, TX. We were so captivated by its remoteness and beauty that our hearts told us we had to have it as a get away from the big city. Our intention was to retire there in 2015. We named the ranch Tierra Sagrada (sacred land) realizing it was so magical and special out there. The ranch came with a well, electricity and a large if somewhat older mobile home that we refurbished. In 2011 we purchased a newer small mobile home for guests and renters. We added large decks to both places for relaxing, mountain viewing and star gazing.
We reside in Alpine TX now, just a short beautiful 2 hour drive to the ranch. We spend our time at both places.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

The unique benefits are being in a magical beautiful place and having no other tourists (except perhaps a feral donkey or two). Typically, you have to camp out to enjoy such remoteness, but here, you have all the comforts of home with the beauty of the land and sky all to yourself. It is ideal for families to hike, view animal tracks, look at the moon coming up over the mountains and stargazing. No cell coverage here, so: NO TEXTING!! Families love the fact that the kids and even themselves get a break for their devices!
