The region
Monksilver is a quiet village on the eastern edge of Exmoor National Park, tucked between the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills in West Somerset.
Despite its name, the silver has nothing to do with precious metal -- it comes from the Latin 'silva', meaning woodland, so the village is really 'Monk's Wood'.
The village has its own welcoming pub, The Notley Arms Inn, which serves award-winning food and local ales. The neighbouring village of Stogumber is two miles away and has a community-run shop and Post Office, while the town of Williton is three miles away with two small supermarkets, a petrol station, cash machines, restaurants, a butcher, pharmacy, and hardware store.
Minehead is approximately ten miles away and has larger supermarkets including Tesco and Morrisons, high street banks, and a broader range of shops. Taunton, the county town of Somerset, is roughly 14 miles south and offers a full range of supermarkets and amenities. Both Tesco and Sainsbury's deliver grocery shopping to this area.
Monksilver sits within Exmoor's International Dark Sky Reserve -- the first in Europe -- making it an outstanding location for stargazing on clear nights. The Brendon Hills, Quantock Hills, and the Somerset coast are all within easy reach by car.
