Casa Donnafugata - Cinq Chambres Villa, Couchages 11
âSet in the depths of the Sicilian countryside, this rustic Ragusa property has undergone a renovation by architect Arturo Montanelli, who restored the villaâs weathered stonework, contrasting it with new elements in steel and wood.â Check out âHoliday home of the weekâ review of Casa Donnafugata on Spaces.com
There's nothing quite like meandering around the narrow lanes of UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ragusa. It is quite simply magnificent, exhibiting beautiful Baroque buildings dating almost entirely from 1693, when the town was devastated by an earthquake and re-built. As you clamber up the steps to outstanding view in the summerâs heat, the summit will be worth the walk.
So, to stay right in the heart of the rural province is a treat indeed - particularly when an evocative and rural Masseria is your place to stay! Recently renovated, this authentic stone villa blends in seamlessly with the surrounding countryside. Uniting the ramshackle building with contemporary metal doors and sliding glass panels that open out into the courtyard - like Sicily, it is full of contrasts.
This is evident when you enter Casa Donnafugata. Preserving its charm and simplicity with its use of natural materials: exposed bricks, wooden beams and metal chairs, there's also striking modern art lining the walls, colourful squashy sofas and throws that give it a contemporary edge. A well-equipped kitchen and characteristic dining area also make for great entertaining, so cooking up a tantalising Italian meal for eleven people is no problem at all, especially if you're visiting with extended family or a group of friends.
Five individually-styled bedrooms and four bathrooms means there's plenty of space for everyone too. There's even an annex with a double bedroom and art studio for all those budding Michelangelos.
Casa Donnafugata isn't all about the inside though. Step outside and revel in the splendid southern sun unwinding on a sun lounger, enjoying an al fresco lunch or taking a refreshing dip in the impressive pool - all framed by traditional dry-stone walls.
When it's time to venture out of your private, luxurious residence, there's much to explore. Take the white-washed Donnafugata Castle nearby, which is well worth a visit, before travelling on to Ragusa itself - a jaw-dropping Baroque city. Picturesque piazzas, majestic palazzi, an incredible historic centre and sloping streets full of restaurants, bars and cafes - it's a sight to behold. There's no less than 3 Michelin Star restaurants here if you fancy a special night out.
Otherwise, there's only one thing to do; and that's - hit the beach. Marina di Ragusa, Santa Maria dei Foccale or Pozzalo - take your pick!

Location:
If you were cast away on an island, you may want that island to be Sicily, a beguiling place of contrasts. From bewitching Baroque hilltop towns to sun-blessed beaches, ancient Greek temples, Roman theatres, astounding food and an iconic volcano - it's certainly one of Italy's top draws.
Here, in the south-east of Sicily you'll discover the most stunning examples of those Baroque cities. Enter Syracuse, home to one of the greatest ancient Greek theatres that's still in use today, a Roman amphitheatre, picturesque piazzas, sandy beaches and olive-green seas. Or, the beautiful town of Ragusa, renowned for its jaw-dropping buildings and wonderful Piazza Duomo, brimming with bars and restaurants (a few Michelin star ones at that). And then there's Modica. What can we say? Aside from its world renowned chocolate, the churches, palazzi and bewitching buildings that line the narrow streets of Upper and Lower parts of the city are joyous.
Acireale, another Baroque town. Overlooking the Ionian Sea, its fascinating architecture, a world renowned carnival, historic churches and that fact it's near the magnificent Mount Etna - are real pulls.
Sightseeing done, head for the beach. Crescent shaped sandy bays, rugged coastlines, rocky coves and long stretches of white sand await you - with enough water sports to keep the whole family entertained. Or, you could just relax in the glorious southern sun of course, with an arancino or two. The local street food in Sicily is unsurpassing.
