We are a well-travelled couple and we find it impossible to understand why some visitors have given this property a 5-star rating. It is the worst property we have ever stayed in.
We did not feel welcome. We arrived on a cold wet day to find the property padlocked and unprepared for our visit. We could have readily forgiven this if the property itself were in good order but the outside area was weed filled, rubbish was stored in the barbecue and the inside was poorly presented.
Electrical fittings were substandard. Loose electrical cables hung out of walls throughout the property. In one bedroom there was a plastic tube direct to the outside where a heater had been removed and the aperture had not been closed off. In the main bedroom there was an ineffectual gas-electric heater. When it rained, the water ran in through the window frame and down the back of the heater. It was not possible to cook a meal because, when the oven was turned on, the whole electrical system tripped off. We were told, “No you can’t use the oven because it makes the electric go off”. An electric fan heater was provided in the bathroom which was plugged in to a standard wall socket adjacent to the wash basin. There was no kettle (!) and the toaster had to be placed on the floor in order to be plugged in to the only available socket in the living area.
Fittings and hygiene were substandard. The washing up sponge-scourer was dirty and worn through with holes. The fridge and cooker were yellowed with age. The fridge door was held closed with a hook and eye screwed onto the panels. The drawer beneath the fridge was mouldy and stained and the freezer drawers and the sink were dirty. In the bathroom were more used sponge-scourers - presumably left from cleaning the bathroom after previous guests. Another room, which was black with mildew, was used for storage and contained a confusion of items including carrier bags of foodstuffs. The Wi-fi did not work and the contents of the house were old and time worn. It was shockingly poor.
The owner of the property did, after some time, offer us a free meal at the nearby restaurant. Manuela (the cook, we believe) was kind and tried to help but these actions, and the promise of an electrician the following day, were not enough to assuage our overall dissatisfaction. We left at noon the day after our arrival and booked into a hotel.
