The excavations of Ancient Akrotiri is just a 5-minute drive. They were discovered in the early 70's and is second to the Pompei excavations. Close to the excavations you have Akrotiri beach which has a selection of fish taverns, a great place to chill out. A little further along you come to the famous Red beach which is very scenic but can be quite crowded in the summer. On the north side of the cape just before entering Akrotiri you will find Caldera beach. The beach is very nice and has a natural reef that you can swim to, great for snorkeling. There is also a dive center for those interested in scuba. The one tavern there has a great view of the Volcanos across the Caldera. Heading on the road towards the lighthouse you will find Mesa Pigadia, which is a small bay. The adventurous ones can go out kayaking or have some lunch and a swim. Continuing further the road ends at the lighthouse. A great place to explore, and very famous for the sunset. Snacks and drinks can be purchased there.
