We stayed at the cottage for our first two nights of an extended stay in Ireland, and it was perfect for the kids. They loved the donkeys and the sheep, the tower was a once in lifetime experience, and using the wood stove so special. I personally loved the gardens and the sitting room best of all.We were so grateful to meet the hosts and tour their magical property.
Writers, romantics - if you want to experience a glimpse into the medieval past of Ireland this is for you. It is a captivating and unique place, a labour of love for Anna and Hume, the hosts. We got a Personal once in a lifetime tour of the mediaeval Tower from our host who is a deeply knowledgeable stonemason and builder. For example the. Rot iron used came from Chinese junk anger chains.
Restful stay in a beautiful location with a castle just 20 minutes from Rosslare
Anna and Jim were great hosts and warmly welcomed us to our cottage. It was beautifully located at their historic ancestral home and had been in Anna's family for generations. The cottage was located at the end of a quiet gravel driveway through woods and farm fields. With walled gardens, it was an ideal sanctuary to get away from day-to-day life. If it's chilly at night, wood is supplied to make your own log fire. And if you're as lucky as we were on our stay, on a clear night, the skies open up to an amazing vista of stars. In the morning, we woke up to the sound of crows, abundant birdlife and sheep. Be sure to take some carrots with you to feed their donkeys on your morning walk. The cottages have been expertly converted by Jim's own hands from the original cow sheds and attached to the castle. Make sure you ask Jim to show you around the castle - you won't be disappointed with the views from the top, and with Jim's historical knowledge and description of how craftsmanship has restored the building over many years..We loved our stay and thoroughly enjoyed visiting local places of interest with our dog. We'll be back!
We have stayed at many VRBOs, and this is the first one that was so disappointing that we had to find alternate accommodations. The furniture was heavily worn and stained, the curtainsâ fabric was shredding, the windows were drafty, bathrooms not clean and without showers (though were advertised as having showers), and very little hot water. This property has great potential, but is not one we can recommend.
Hier steht die Zeit still. GemĂŒtliches Cottage, reizende, sehr besorgte Gastgeber. Tolle Lage zur FĂ€hre Rosslare. GrĂŒn gelegen. Sonne Terrasse. FĂŒr Freunde des ruhigen Landlebens und Kinder ein Traum.
The property was beyond~ it was fabulous, the castle, the sheep, donkeys, chickens, apple trees, garden and rooks! Everything was taken care of inside the cottage and the beds were comfy too!
But the real treasure was Anna and Jim and their son, Jack, all the kindest people you could hope to meet. Caring, communicative, generous and loving. It really made the stay truly memorable!
For our first night in Ireland, we felt like we had stepped back in to a different century. Beautiful landscape, quaint lodging, hospitable hosts (Anna and Jim) and VERY friendly farm animals. Jim was an extremely knowledgeable tour guide of the 14th century Normal Tower. He is a skilled modern day stone mason who patiently and kindly shared his time, treasure and talents with us. This is a place for the adventurer-type who does not mind smelling like a wood fire and loves animals and nature.
Myself, my partner, his brother and sister in law enjoyed this property very much. The cottage was very comfortable and loved that it use to be a cow barn :-). Jim gave us a tour of the castle which was fantastic and one of the highlights of our month long stay in Ireland. Very much appreciated the work and detail of craftsmanship that our hosts put into this property.
Cosy cottage with neighboring castle and vivid history lesson
When we booked Annaâs and Jimâs cottage we had no idea how cosy and beautiful it would be.
We enjoyed every minute of our stay - during the day while exploring the surroundings and in the evenings while sitting by the warming fireside reading or playing a board game with the kids.
Anna and Jim are great hosts. If there is the opportunity for a guided tour of the castle donât miss it. Jim knows the castle like the back of his hand and tells its story with so much wit and charme.
We would love to come back some time in the future.
A great place to relax and wind down and have never slept so well!
Anna and Jim are excellent hosts and a tour of the castle is a must The grounds are amazing the buildings the animals the different gardens all incorporated into a working farm Great location close to beaches and Kilmore Quay Mary Barryâs restaurant a must and the Hideout pub not to be missed Will definitely return Thankyou K & J
We had an amazing two nights stay in Boxwell Cottage. The cottage has beautiful old world charm and is attached to a wonderful castle. The owners Anna and Jim were extremely hospitable and Jim went out of us his way to give us a guided tour of the castle and its grounds. We didn't know this area of Wexford and we enjoyed amazing walks on nearby beaches.
We would definitely like to return.
Everything exceeded our expectations. The location, the grounds, the hostâŠeverything was wonderful. Anna was very responsive and so sweet to check in and take us on a tour of the grounds and the castle. A trip to remember and we hope to be back!
A long overdue family catch led us to Boxwell cottage and we couldn't have picked a better place. We had the pleasure of a personal welcome by Jim who kindly showed us around and more importantly advised that despite the listing online, the local pub, The Hideout, was open! The setting, comfort and relaxed environment created is a real credit to all involved. Dont hesitate, just go and see for yourself.
Our week with Anna and Jim in Butlerstown was easily the most wonderful holiday we have had in Ireland. Their kindness to our children, their wonderful hospitality, their intimate knowledge and connection to the history of the castle, and simply their genuine warmth, created a haven for us that wonât be forgotten. Thank you both.
We had a glorious week of sunshine, and what a beautiful place to stay in. Full of charm and history. Jim and Anna were lovely and our girls were delighted with the donkeys hens and the sheep . Jim's tour of the castle was a delight..
A truly pleasant stay in a beautiful part of ireland
Where do I start ? Itâs the Best Holiday we have ever had. Just 15 minutes from Rosslare & Wexford, a perfect beautiful quiet tranquil home to enjoy the South East of Ireland. Our hosts Jim & Anna are the kindest most helpful hosts ever, we had a tour of the amazing castle, they even looked after our dogs so we could go to Dublin for the day, nothing was too much trouble.
We loved our home which 7 of us stayed Limited WiFi which for a few days killed us but we grew to love not sitting on our phones, instead we fed the donkeys chickens sheep and had quality family time. Ollie the donkey and myself bonded and Iâm going to miss him so much even though he kissed me and pinched my gold earring lol
You need a car... we had 2 and we visited the lovely beaches towns churchâs Pubs cafes castles restaurants theatres... we didnât stop and was blessed with the sunny weather, but Iâd go back in the winter with the open fire, warm baths, and cosy front room.
This isnât your standard accommodation, itâs special and we really canât wait to return.
Anna Jim Thankyou so much xx
This holiday was so important to us, bringing my mum back home to Ireland and it couldnât of been more perfect xx
Geschmackvoll eingerichtetes historisches GemÀuer, sehr ruhig gelegen.

Loved it!
Anna's family has been living at Butlerstown Castle for many generations. It has been her wish for many years to be able to share the tranquility and beauty of the place with others. Her husband Jim worked for years in London restoring heritage buildings, and running an architectural salvage business. He has done all the restoration and repair work himself to the two cottages (originally a 1600s cowhouse). Anna works with complementary therapies - and organizes workshops at Butlerstown.
We moved back to Anna's family home some years ago. People often say it is like stepping into another world coming here, it is so peaceful! The castle, or Tower House, is remarkable in that it is in such good original condition. We are a mile from the sea as the crow flies and there are a number of good beaches within a 10 or 15 minute drive. There are also places of great natural and wild-life beauty nearby, such as Tacumshin lake, and the world-heritage Saltee Islands which are accessed from Kilmore Quay. Anna has a range of pets, including donkeys, free range hens and sheep.
We are just 20 minutes from Wexford, and15 minutes from Ireland's main port, Rosslare Harbour. There is good access to excellent restaurants, pubs - Mary Barryâs is a well known pub/restaurant - riding stables, Johnstown Castle museum, Kilmore Quay fishing village and golf courses.
