We had a great stay! The house is cute and comfortable. Convenient access to hiking and the beach. Bob and Judy were very communicative and helpful throughout.
We had an excellent visit. Cottage is clean and well-equipped. Remote location next to a nature preserve, but just half an hour from towns, restaurants, and sites. Night skies are incredible! Hosts were easy to contact.
Our week at the cottage was delightful. It is quiet, private, and comfortable. The cottage had everything we needed. Everything worked smoothly.
It was such a joy to fall asleep to the sound of the waves. We are very grateful that Bob and Judy opened their cottage to us.
This is the perfect place if you're looking to be away from hustle and bustle. We took our 2 dogs and enjoyed walking in the conservation land right next door. The small private rocky beach was perfect for sitting in the sun, reading, and looking for sea glass. There is A/C downstairs, but not in the bedrooms. This was fine since the temp cooled down each night even in late July. Bob & Judy are lovely. We will definitely be back!
My wife and I stayed at Treetops to recover from a larger family vacation. The cabin is lovely and our stay was perfect. We spent several days just hanging out on the deck, reading and enjoying the view. We also took a couple of day trips -- to Monhegan Island, the Emergency Vet clinic in Portland, Rockland and the lighthouse on the breakwater, paddleboarding. Aside from being the perfect refuge, the cabin was also centrally located for a large variety of activities. Bob and Judy were welcoming and helpful. Highly recommend.
Lovely location with view of the water. Wonderfully quiet with plenty of scenic walks/trails from cottage. Cottage has all needed amenities for comfortable stay. Full service grocery/ and farm stand within 20 minutes. Charming seaside decor. Hosts very responsive and friendly. Pet friendly rental. Great base for exploring mid-Maine coast.
The house itself is nice and clean and had everything you could want. It even had a land line phone that came in handy as we had no cell service. The view of the ocean from the deck was nice but not a clear view as a lot of pine trees are in the way so you really could not sit and boat watch. But the sunsets even with the trees was beyond words.
The private beach is a hike through the woods and turned out to be a little to far for my elderly mom. You need to be more adgile than mom was.
For people in the age group of 20-40 it would not be a problem. I could see it being an issue for people with kids that need to go to the bathroom a lot as it is a good 10 minutes walk.
The location is wonderful. It is private yet a only an hours drive from all the tourist things to do. I took my elderly mom here for her birthday because she grew up in the towns of Friendship and Waldoboro and wanted to see all the places she use to know and this was the perfect place for that.
The owner Bob was very helpful and even offered to let us use his row boat for an hour. He could not have been nicer.
The only 2 problems I had and they are personal was what ever dryer sheet/laundry soap sent they used I seemed to be allergic to. The smell made me stuff up and gave me a rash. What are the odds right. The other thing was I found the beds to hard again personal.
If I was to come back to Friendship I would look into this place again for sure.
Bob thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Great cottage. Great location. Great hosts. The pictures do the property justice. The cottage is what we would consider a âclassicâ up north getaway. Everything was classic from the decor, to the (modern) kitchen, bath and furnishings. We especially loved the isolated location and that it offered us the opportunity to hike the various footpaths that were available. We enjoyed our coffee on the breakfast (front) porch and our wine on the evening (back) porch. We like to prepare our own meals when we travel so we really appreciated the fine kitchen with the excellent kitchenware. And a special shoutout to our host for the use of his air compressor when one of the tires on the car developed a slow leak.
Our family had a terrific time. The cottage was perfect. Bob and Judy provided us with everything we could possibly need, no detail was overlooked. I would highly recommend this cottage!
I almost hate to review this listing because I want to keep it my secret. This cottage was one of the best I have stayed in. The location was perfect and everyone was so nice. Between relaxing on the beach, hiking the trails and eating lobster on the back deck, it doesn't get any better than that. Thanks so much to the owners for making this a piece of paradise. p.s. make sure you go tot Jameson's restaurant (in Friendship) , best food and prices
Bob and Judy were very helpful. I had injured my foot the day before our arrival. The bathroom and bedroom were upstairs, however, I was able to navigate with my disability because the stairs were wide and there was a walk-in shower.
Bob stopped by every day to see how we were doing and to offer help.
It's a lovely cottage with a deck outside and plenty of reading material. We were unable to walk the trails this time. It's located in a beautiful, secluded part of Friendship.
A delightful place to escape North Carolina's heat and humidity. Couldn't have better hosts than Bob and Judy. The cottage lacks nothing. Sunsets to die for. And for tourist, you'd better have a week or two to see the attractions--all within an hour's drive. Do it!
Great visit after a very busy period for the family. Bob and Judy were great hosts and made us feel at home and part of the community. Bob even had the pleasure of waking up at midnight and 4:30 to guide the poor gent who got the honor from United to drive our bags up to Friendship. The "cabin" is amazing! Lacks nothing you might want for your vacation. Pleasantly remote; the only noises I heard was the "treetops" and the throaty sound of a local lobster boat going by unseen in the fog. Best sleep I've gotten in years!! You're not going to drive down the street to PF Changs here and that is the best thing about it....pack some patience and a road warrior mentality to get out and explore all the great options this part of Maine has to offer; avoid Boothbay Harbor. My mistake here: hit Morse's Sauerkraut on day one...not the last day...you won't regret it. Thanks again Bob and Judy and we'll be back again to open your season for you in 2018!
Thank you for our wonderful stay at Treetops. It was even better than we expected. The cottage was perfect for our family of four and included more than everything needed for our stay. The book of information about the cottage and the area was immensely helpful. We are seasoned visitors to Friendship, but we were pleasantly surprised to find wonderful new places to eat and visit based on your suggestions. The hiking trails on the property are truly magical. Our kids loved making fairy houses and exploring the woods. The beach was the perfect launching spot for our kayak and provided fertile ground for our son's treasure hunting expeditions. We plan to visit again next year!
Me, my wife and my nephew spent a week in Maine at this gorgeous little cottage. It is completely vacation ready with all of the comforts of home. Extremely well maintained and clean. Bob and Judy, have thought of everything. You buy the groceries and you are ready to go. It is a perfect launching point to do day trips. We went to Bangor, Bar Harbor/Acadia Nat'l Park, and Portland while staying there and they were all a comfortable drive. The cottage is well off the beaten path and very peaceful. It was great to go down to the private cottage beach and watch the lobster boats checking their traps. It is truly a hidden gem. I would highly recommend this cottage rental to anyone.

Bob is a Professor Emeritus of Mesoamerican Archaeology at Brandeis University. Judy is Professor Emerita of Anthropology/Archaeology at the University of Massachusetts (Boston campus). In Maine, along with his son Jeremy, he also operates a small oyster farm.
We originally built Treetops Cottage for our children and family guests as an annex to our nearby Martin Point residence. In recent years we have been renting it on a weekly basis when it is not otherwise occupied. More recently we repurchased the Spruce Woods Lodge, nestled not far away in the midst of a pristine forested conservation area and, after extensive renovations, have also begun to rent it year-round on a limited basis (see listing on Air B&B or VRBO, or contact us directly).
