Highly recommended

  • 5 de 5

Having stayed in a number of VRBO rentals on the Hawaiian Islands, this was by far our favorite place! Both the house itself and the location are perfect if you want a quiet, laid back Hawaiian spot. Spacious, open air feel, very quiet, close to the water. Manini Beach and Kealakekua Bay are amazing. Quite spacious for our family of four. House had everything you need. We will be back for sure!

Magical House in the Trees

  • 5 de 5

We loved everything about this house, beginning with the prompt and attentive communication with the owner, who sent detailed instructions not only about the house but the surrounding areas and gave excellent recommendations for where to go sightseeing and where to shop and eat. Melouise had sent directions for how to get to the house from the airport, but upon learning that we were actually coming to the house from Volcanoes National Park, she promptly emailed a whole new set of driving directions including a recommendation to stop at a beach on the drive over where the children could see sea turtles. We took her up on it and did! It was wonderful! The house itself is a magical treehouse, filled with all the comforts of home. While there, I was whisked away to the Hawaii one reads about in books -- enchanting. The children coveted the ample grassy yard where they played catch and we cherished the pahio (verandah) where we heard birdsong in the mornings while we ate breakfast and crickets by night. We also absolutely loved Manini Beach, which is a five-minute WALK. This beach is absolutely perfect for young children (our boys are 8 and 5). There is a sweet little sandy beach entry, a grassy park, great snorkeling and lovely sunsets above intricate lava formations. We also took the 15 minute WALK to Ke'e Beach, which has a more expansive sandy area, wonderful tide pools (where my older son saw a sea turtle and my younger son saw a starfish), and more great snorkeling. The house is well equipped with snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, and water shoes, which we were grateful for not having to pack in our luggage. We have stayed in many VRBOs over the years and this house is hands down the best experience we've ever had. Thank you, Melouise!!!

Kealakekau bay at its finest

  • 5 de 5

This property exceeded our expectations. It is a wonderful combination of modern comfort and old world style Hawaii. We were so close to the beauty of the islands, yet far away from the hustle and bustle of tourist life. We would like to thank the owner of the property and Karen, the downstairs resident, for sharing their slice of paradise.

Réponse du propriétaire: Wow Bob! Mahalo, mahalo, mahalo! Thanks so much for the great review. As always, I love it when I know that people have fully appreciated the house, the birds, the lanai, sunsets, the peace and quiet, Manini Beach, Napoopoo, etc. etc. You were a perfect fit and we look forward to welcoming you again and again. Nothing will have changed in the village. Hana Hou and Aloha, Mel

Christmas '16

  • 5 de 5

We were a “3 generations family” looking for a quiet, local Hawaiian experience and this is it. Except for the bugs, I thought there would be bugs but the house must be really tight! I saw one dead one in two weeks.

All the other reviews are bang on and give great advice. It’s more a home than a “vacation rental”. You will find things in the kitchen like poultry scissors, decent knives, all kinds of baking pans, containers for leftovers, measuring cups and chopping boards. Also tons of picnic gear, coolers, a really good coffee maker (and a grinder for beans), juice jugs, salad bowls… If we wanted it, it was there. We cooked a full Christmas dinner and baked a birthday cake no problem.

Comfortable beds thank goodness, soft sheets and plenty of pillows. Excellent water pressure – lovely showers! Great Wifi and lots of games including water toys. The wee life jacket fit out little one perfectly and he used it every day! For the old lady (that’d be me) the folding chairs were fantastic too! And bird seed for the birds – a morning ritual.

Here’s what we did – unless we went on a day trip to the volcanoes or something, we would get up early and go down to Manini beach (or maybe down to Two Step) before most folk were up and out. When the sun got up around 10 or so and people started coming, we’d retreat back to the house for lunch and a siesta or go shopping and eat out or go touring in the air conditioned car. Then we went to the beach at around 3 when lots of folk were leaving and had it quiet again until sunset. Not one of us got too much sun and we could pretend we were the only tourists!

Mel is a darling and called to make sure we were OK. Karen (downstairs) is just great and very happy to help with any questions. The chickens for some reason DO NOT CROW and are delightful. Fresh grapefruit and limes were awesome.

Réponse du propriétaire: Mahalo Jac (and Mac)! I knew from our first email chats about the house, way back in Feb. 2016, that you were going to have the time of your lives. It looks like you really nailed how to get the most out of every day: Manini, naps and touring. Brilliant! All will be waiting for you in December of 2018..your Christmas dates are booked and the birds will be waiting. A hui ho and a warm aloha, Mel

Amazing location and service, clean and spacious house, well equipped

  • 5 de 5

We will return to this house! The location is perfect for exploring the local waters and other attractions on foot or by short car ride. Meloise (owner) was fantastic about getting us oriented before our trip by providing practical information and tips to make our days on the island easy and fun. During a week-long stay we didn't manage to do/see/explore everything she recommended. The house was as pictured, plenty of space for the group to gather in the common areas inside and out, lovely grounds, very well equipped kitchen, and bedrooms with thoughtful touches like laundry baskets and extra blankets. We were grateful to have beach towels, chairs, and snorkeling gear in a variety of sizes to use. Karen, the first floor tenant, was also kind and very informative. Things to know about the house: noises carry, you can hear voices even behind closed doors; there is no glass in the windows, only screens and blinds (this is not an issue, given the warm climate and the extended eaves that prevent rain from entering, but was new to us). Our best advice while staying here: 1.) take advantage of all the local beaches in Meloise's info packet, we were often the only people on them and saw amazing sea life in the shallows and while snorkeling (turtles, eels, sea hares, sea cucumbers, crabs, fish, and more); 2.) Protect yourself and the environment - bring Reef-Safe sunscreen and wear sandals or water shoes when exploring the shallows to prevent cuts from sharp volcanic rock and stings from urchins; 3.) stop in at some of the local farms and co-ops, the people are very knowledgeable and generous with their time and samples; 4.) for parties who want to rent kayaks at Kealakekua Bay, visit Bayside Rentals about 5 minute walk from the house, they are family run and were very helpful + have 1-3 person kayaks, drybags and more 5.) make the trip to Volcanoes National Park and stay after dark - breathtaking; 6.) take time to catch the sunsets.

Réponse du propriétaire: Mahalo Allilson! It was nice hearing about how much you and your boys enjoyed the house and the bay, and how they took to snorkeling..That's wonderful and a proud accomplishment for your younger boys. I'm glad you appreciated the "treehouse" and the birds especially. I look forward to being able to welcome you and the boys again. Thanks for the hints for future guests. One caution for everyone: None of the kayak vendors at the bay are legally permitted to rent kayaks. On occasion the DLNR (Dept. Land and Natural Resources) patrol the bay and confiscate illegal rental kayaks, which isn't fun for the renters! . I'm glad to know the company you chose were helpful and courteous. The permitted vendors are: Kona Boys, Aloha Kayak and Adventures in Paradise. Melouise
