The Neighborhood:
Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao, is a vibrant and colorful city located on the southern coast of the island in the heart of the Caribbean. As the cultural and historical center of the island, Willemstad offers visitors a unique blend of Dutch colonial charm and Caribbean energy. The city is divided into two central districts, Punda and Otrobanda, meaning “the other side,” which are connected by the iconic Queen Emma Bridge. This floating pontoon bridge, originally built in 1888, is one of the city’s most photographed landmarks and remains a vital part of local life.
Known for its pastel-colored Dutch-style buildings and scenic waterfront, Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a top destination for travelers seeking history, architecture, and authentic Caribbean culture. The city is also a hub for tourism, trade, banking, and petroleum refining, making it both historically significant and economically vital to the island.
Willemstad is home to some of the most important landmarks in Curaçao. Fort Amsterdam, built in 1635, once protected the entrance to Schottegat Harbour and now serves as the headquarters of the government of Curaçao. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue, dating back to 1732, is the oldest in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere and remains open to visitors. Just around the corner, the Dutch Reformed Church, built in 1769, stands as a symbol of the island’s colonial past.
Culture lovers will appreciate a visit to Museum Kurá Hulanda, which offers a powerful and moving account of African empires, the transatlantic slave trade, and African heritage in the Caribbean. The Curaçao Museum, the island’s oldest museum, showcases a diverse mix of traditional artifacts and contemporary art that reflects the island’s rich cultural heritage.
Whether you're strolling through the colorful alleys of Punda, crossing the floating bridge into Otrobanda, or soaking up the atmosphere along the waterfront, Willemstad invites you to discover its beauty, history, and warm Caribbean spirit.
Getting Around:
To fully experience everything Curaçao has to offer, from secluded beaches to scenic viewpoints and local hotspots, renting a car is highly recommended. The island’s top attractions are spread out, and having your own transportation gives you the freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace.
Although public transportation is available, it is limited and can be unreliable. Scooters are fun for short distances, especially around areas like Jan Thiel, but are not ideal for exploring the more expansive island due to hilly terrain and busy roads.
If you're interested in renting a car, we’re happy to connect you with trusted local providers that offer competitive prices and reliable service. Just let us know — we’re here to help make your stay as smooth and enjoyable as possible.
If you choose to rent a car, there are many parking spots available within a 5-minute walk from the apartment. Street parking is also possible, depending on availability. Please note that during business hours, street parking is paid, approximately 1 USD per hour.
That said, if you prefer to stay close to home, you’ll find everything you need within walking distance. From small supermarkets and a local market to a barbershop, diving school, restaurants, bars, and even a small city beach, it’s all steps away. You’re also perfectly positioned to explore neighbouring districts such as Scharloo, Pietermaai, and Otrobanda on foot.
Whether you're driving across the island or strolling through Willemstad's historic streets, this location offers the best of both worlds.
Other Things to Note:
Freshly made up beds with the most beautiful quality linen, towels and beach towels will be waiting for you upon arrival.
