Habaru House apartment 31G is a ground floor, ocean front apartment of Habaru House. It is a deluxe apartment with a queen-sized bedroom for up to two people.
South of Hopkins Village proper, Habaru House is a 12-20 minute walk to outstanding oceanfront restaurants and several roadside eateries in an area we call “South Hopkins”. The Village proper is a short bicycle ride away on one of our owner-supplied bicycles.
It is a terrific home base for all your Belize adventures. We are fortunate to be located on one of the nicest beaches in the country. Enjoy the beautiful oceanfront from the white sand beach or ground floor covered patio with its exotic cane ceiling. On the beach for your use are beach chairs, a lazy day hammock, and an outside charcoal grill.
Habaru House 31G boasts an open living area on the ground floor with three sets of ocean-facing French doors opening onto the separate, covered patio. Local artwork and wall hangings enhance the inside atmosphere. If you choose to cook in you will enjoy the fully equipped kitchen with exotic wood cabinets adjacent to the dining and living areas.
The flooring is Mexican tile, while all exterior and interior trim is Belize mahogany. The interior doors are hand made from local “poison wood”, known for its outstanding wood grain. The spacious master bedroom has walk-in shower with glass surround and a unique hand-carved stone sink.
31G is a ground floor unit with its entrance and lock box facing the ocean. Above it is Habaru House, a four bedroom, four bath accommodation on the 2nd and 3rd floors, rented separately. Some families rent top and bottom (31G) and take advantage of the internal connecting / locked-off stair well. Please see VRBO 9700160 to see Habaru House.

The fishing is wonderful! If fresh lobster and conch are in season and something you are looking for, you have come to the right place! The close-by hotels have the best restaurants in Belize, in our opinion. Or even better, go into the village and eat at one of the local restaurants to enjoy a local, cultural “Garifuna” dish.
This apartment features all of the comforts of home: flat screen TV, CD player, high-end appliances, reading materials. You will not be roughing it on this Belize adventure! Check out the photos.
Don’t feel like cleaning, cooking, or doing the laundry on vacation? We can arrange all of these for an additional charge. Make your vacation a true vacation!. Transportation to and from Dangriga airport or from BZE International is also available.
A full time property manager and staff maintains our property. They rake the beaches, arrange for the kayaks, and handle any of your concerns; just ask. They treat guests as family and want you to truly enjoy your vacation.
How to get here: Major airlines fly into Belize International Airport (BZE). From there you have options: rent a car and drive down to Hopkins (about a 2-2.5 hour drive on the beautiful Hummingbird Highway or 1.5 hours on the faster, though less scenic, Coastal Highway. Or, take one of the regional carriers (Tropic Air or Maya Air) to the Dangriga Airport; from there it is only a short 20-25 minute taxi ride to the property.

Fantastic!
We stayed here for 24 nights in March and loved it. It’s perfect for a couple. Beautiful Sandy Beach with kayaks and standup paddle boards. Also has nice cruiser bikes that we used to bike into town almost every day. Gillian is a great communicator and provided a lot of helpful information. The local property managers are very accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.

Peaceful Getaway
Was a great place for our family to get away and relax for the week. Property was clean and perfectly located right on the beach. Loved having Dana cook a local traditional meal each day. Host and local manager(s) were quick to respond to any needs or questions. Locals in the area are very friendly, we enjoyed every day of our vacation.

Rarely do you rent someplace and it actually looks like it does in the pictures, but this house was spot on! Quaint town, lovely people helping us that are connected to the house, gorgeous view. Exactly what we were looking for on our Belize adventure!

Wonderful winter getaway
Habaru House and Hopkins were exactly as advertised, very friendly and safe. The kayaks and bikes at Habaru provided lots of flexibilty and opportunities for exercise. Very comfortable apartment with multiple restaurants within walking distance or a short bike ride.

Just what I needed!
I was looking for something quiet and out of the way of the major tourist areas and this was perfect! No noise, no golf carts but walking distance to everything. It was incredibly clean and well stocked with towels and kitchen items. The bathroom is gorgeous! I If I wasn't diving or riding my bike, I was in the hammock listening to the waves or star gazing. Will absolutely be back!

Wonderful stay at Habaru House
We had a wonderful stay at Habaru House. The house is really nice and spacious. Right on the beach. Anthony (caretaker of the house) was great about stopping by to make sure we had all we needed. Dana (his wife) prepared a wonderful meal for us on our first night arrival. This house is on a quiet area of beach with sandy bottom and shallow entry so it is easy to sit out in the cool water with a nice cocktail. The kayaks and bikes were also a great feature.

Perfect Winter Getaway
There are not enough good things I can say about this property!! My husband and I just recently returned from a two month stay at Habaru House 31G, and loved every minute of our getaway. The check is process was easy, communication with the owners was easy, and communication with the property manager was easy. However, the best part of this home is the AMAZING beach and AMAZING views from everywhere in the property. We had absolutely everything we needed, and have zero complaints. I cannot recommend this property enough!!! My husband and I always said we'd never go to the same place twice; however, we will be back many times in the future. Don’t hesitate, just book it!

Hopkins Belize Getaway.
We had a wonderful time with my teenage children my elderly parents. We had 7 people and had plenty of room. The house is clean and well appointed. Doug the owner was responsive to communication. We had a local couple (Dana and Anthony) as our host at the house. Dana cooked for us and it was great. Anthony was was available for any concerns. Hopkins is a cool town the is off the normal tourist beaten path. Lots of great oceanside restaurants. We had a wonderful time at the house sitting on the private beach and kayaking (all provided). The home is in Central Coastal Belize, great location for inland adventures. Found a great tour company called Get to know Belize Adventures, they set up four trips for us and picked us up at the house. Great trip. Highly recommend.

We could not have dreamed of a more perfect setting, home, and hosts!
What a vacation! Three generations under one roof! Grandma and Bapa loved the apartment with their own entry-way to the main living room. The parents and three kids each had their own bedrooms and bathrooms! Dana prepared the most delicious meal our first night which lasted through the next couple of days. Anthony took care of everything we needed for fun and sun, and meeting Doug was a real treat. The house is spectacular and more beautiful than the pictures. We sailed to Bread and Butter Caye and again up the Sittee River (thank you, Bryan), snorkeled, fished, kayaked, rode bicycles, explored Mayan Temples, tubed through caves, hiked in the jungle, para-sailed, drank local rum from coconuts, joined the Garifuna holiday, and ate a lot! This was a truly special holiday that we will never forget. When you go, check out the ipod playlist - Very nice!!

Thank you Cristy for your review. Yes, the Habaru House is ideal for family groups as large as 10-12 when you add the ground floor apartment. Dana and Anthony do a fantastic job caroling for our property and tending to guest requests.
Having our cell phone in the unit gives you easy access to either of them.

Clean & roomy home on gorgeous beachfront
Gorgeous comfortable clean home. Plenty of linens and comfortable beds. Gorgeous beachfront. Plenty of bikes for my husband, me, and our 2 older teens. We didn't rent the golf cart and rode bikes everywhere. Enjoyed a handful of nice restaurants on the strip -- Lucky Lobster, Hamanasi, Jaguar Reef, Loggerheads. Unfortunately we missed Chef Robb's but heard it's excellent too. Our favorite restaurant was a local one where Charlton, our guide, took us for lunch after we toured the ruins. We all enjoyed the stewed chicken with rice. Our favorite adventure: snorkeling was a 20-30" boat ride to the beautiful coral reef. Only drawback to the trip was the one tv with fuzzy cable and spotty wifi. Fortunately, we didn't go to Belize to watch tv! Definitely one of my all-time favorite family vacations. Thank you Doug!!!

Unfortunately The internet and TV is not run by Verizon. Private companies distribute TV and Internet in competition with BTL the government owned provider.
The signals strength is best in the winter months when there is less rain and dampness. These oceanfront lines like ours take a beating.
For access to hi-speed ,or shall I say higher speed , internet you are invited by Kathy and Gary owners of the Oasis gym and coffee house ( and the lucky lobster) to use their internet while enjoying a breakfast burrito.
Just north of Diversity Cafe, you passed the Oais when you came into south Hopkins.

Great Home, Great Location
We loved the property. The pictures do not do the house justice. It is nicer than the pictures can capture. All the handmade woodwork, the ceiling details, and the tile work are all beautiful. The beds were comfortable. The air conditioning worked well. took a little time to cool since it wasn't occupied prior to our visit. But once we got it cooled down, we would turn the units off for the daytime and back on when we returned and it was very comfortable.
Dana and Anthony were great. We only had Dana cook our final meal. I wish we used her more.
The kayaks were great as well as the bikes.
It was an easy ride into town. Glad we rented a car to see sights. There are only 2 main roads in belize and we only saw one stop light. Watch out for the speed bumps.
We will definitely be back.

Thank you for the response. The house is maintained by our Belizean property managers, Anthony and Dana. They do an excellent job for our guests.
The house has been sold to a couple who pledge to keep it as a family accommodation and maintain the same high standards using Anthony and Dana as Belizian property managers.
And yes, one meal cooked by Dana is not sufficient to taste local cousins cooked by a Mayan chef with local ingredients.

Chose this house for beach front and was disappointed!
If you're looking for a house with a beautiful beach right out the back door this might be the house for you however during our week the sea grass was piled up thick and high and across the entire beach length of the property. The other properties on either side of us had been cleared of it and when I asked Anthony and Doug about it they both told me it was Mother Nature. Odd then that the rest of the beach front on either side of us had been cleaned maintained and there was no sea grass. Anthony did make efforts to clear it away after emailing the owner and by the time we left to go home the beach was almost cleaned and ready for the next guest. Sand flies are terrible and a lot of our bites were from sitting on the patio.
The house is beautiful and clean with a few minor problems but if it's the beach you're after you might want to look elsewhere.

I explained to the guest in several emails. the sargassum sea weed was blown into our cove by a strong north wind. see location map. I arrived the day the guest left and a south wind had moved the seaweed north. The beach was clear of accumulation. The guest refused to believe mother nature played a role in the accumulation of seaweed. We had hired extra men while guests were here in attempt to rake an opening in the seaweed only to have it blown back in. All the lots in the cove suffered the same fate. By Thursday of their stay the wind had shifted and came form the south. The seaweed broken up.
Sorry to see Mother nature reduced a five start rating to 3.

Family wedding adventure
We really enjoyed our stay at Habaru house! The amenities and the description were pretty spot on. We had access to kayaks and life jackets and bikes. There was plenty of space for everyone. The air conditioners in the bedrooms kept the rooms cool so you could sleep. The only areas for opportunity was the cooling in the main living room likely because it was such a large space with high ceilings and it never really cooled down to a comfortable level. I would recommend getting beach cleaning Tools to keep in the shed. Although though the maintenance people came a few times during our stay, the seaweed was really terrible and if we had rakes or tools it would have Made our use of the beach easier and more enjoyable.The upstairs deck was fantastic, we could eat out there read and just hang out and enjoy the view of the ocean and the gorgeous sea breeze. My mother uses a walker and although with assistance she can ambulate up and down stairs, the stairs are quite lengthy but once she was situated she was fine. There is a downstairs unit with a separate entrance that some of our family used and between the two, it was the perfect l+ocation for a large family gathering. I would highly recommend!

The seaweed blew in just as you arrived and a challenge to control until the wind changes and blows into the north. We looked at the living room AC and it was not up to par so we replaced the unit prior to the next guest arriving. Thank you for the heads up on the AC unit.
The new owners officially take over today, yet I’m still here and will be to coordinate guest reservations and arrivals. New owners, previous guests, pledge to keep the goal of creating a excellent family vacation accommodation.

Beautiful property
Our extended family of 7 stayed at the Habaru House. Here is my rating.
1. Property upkeep- impeccable. The house is in great shape. Only one complaint. Twice during our stay the A/C in one of the downstairs BRs quit working. I'm sure they will rectify this though.
2. Location- remote. It's a long ride here from Belize City. It is a laid back small town. There are good restaurants in the area and we like it but it's not for everyone.
3. The beach. This was our main drawback. The beach is beautiful but when we were there seaweed was push in by the tides and it made the beach smell and no one wanted to wade thru the muck to get in the water. I know this is hit or miss and not in any way the fault of the owner but it is something that you should be aware could happen when you are there.
4. Communication. The owner was friendly and willing to answer any wue ssd's tion but you should know that he recently sold the property so you should check future reviews to see if the next owner keeps up the tradition.
In the end would we stay here again? Yes we would.

The house is maintained by Dana and Anthony and the house is kept in like new condition. The new owners are committed to keeping this a "family accommodation". This is not an investment property and the owners family are frequent residents of the Habaru House. They will continue to employ Dana and Anthony.
When notified we showed up to reset the AC unit.
There are over 30 restaurants offering local fare, American, and European Fare. Its a fantastic assortment for this small fishing village that has reinvented itself as a eco-tourism destination.

Absolutely perfect family location.
This trip was planned as a family celebration for my wife’s milestone 40th birthday and my mother’s 70th birthday. The house is truly beautiful. Options and amenities keep you with a first world lifestyle in a third world country. We were 11 people, so we rented the house and the lower apartment 31G. The care takers, Anthony and Dana, will make sure nothing is wrong with your stay. Dana will also cook for you if you schedule her in advance (highly recommended). There are kayaks on site that you can use to explore the local coastline which we throughly enjoyed. We also did a local snorkeling tour (Anthony organized) at 60 USD per person, that was breathtaking. This is a great place if you are here for a short period of time (one week) and wanting to stay local. Why? It is about a 3 hour drive through very degraded roads filled with potholes and a few one way bridges. We were unfortunate to arrive after a heavy rain and Hopkins roads are all dirt. This eqiviliates to your last ten minutes of driving to be quite unpleasant. The day we left they were regrading it. Some reviews complain about the bugs. We had very little until the last day. It will be luck of the draw based on current weather conditions. Recommendations: Do use Dana for a few or more meals. Don’t do the coastal highway as it is not paved or recommended by anyone. Some Canadians I met took that road and expressed a deep regret for trying it. While it is shorter on paper it will cost you dearly on time.
Bottom line: this is a great place to recharge and unplug from the rat race. If you expect this to be an office getaway with connectivity...don’t. The internet is spotty at best and you will be lucky to get an occasional email update. That was one of my favorite parts:)
We have done Grand Cayman, St. Lucia, St. Martin, St Croix, North Eleuthera (Bahamas), Puerto Rico, and Maui. Our Belieze trip is one of the few we may consider repeating mostly due to these accommodations.

Pleased you enjoyed the house and beach.
We keep switching back and forth between the two internet providers in the village but continue to have poor service. If you need to move a larger document the Oasis Cafe is located right next to the internet booster station and gets good wi-fi.
I find the roads very good, but not up to US standard. All the main roads are paved and over half have been rebuilt to US standards. The single lane bridges are old railway trestles and are slowly being replaced with two lane bridges. Ask me for detailed driving instructions if you plan to drive down from the airport.
A trip to Belize is always a happy “adventure”.

A family vaca - 1st time in Belize
The rental process was easy and all the listed pics were exactly what we found once we arrived. Communicating with the owner before our arrival was smooth and his responsiveness excellent. For our party of seven, having Chef Dana cook for us and using Charlton to bring us back and forth to the airport, insured we'd have no stress related to those needed activities.
I would rent this property again and Anthony the property manager was friendly, informative and attentive. Thank you so much for the great experience!!!!

Beautiful Home with a ocean view!
Perfect house in Hopkins! The house is beautifully decorated and well insulated. I could not hear people on the porch or noises from other bedrooms while in my bedroom which is rare. The view and access of the ocean in front of our house is exactly as the pictures posted on VRBO. Fantastic sunrises and sunsets. Antony, the groundskeeper, was very helpful and available for advice about life in Hopkins. His wife Dana, stocked our fridge for our arrival and made us a lovely dinner for our late night 8:30 pm arrival. She is a private contractor, but well worth whatever she charges…which was minimal. Our group asked for privacy and we received exactly what we wanted. Strongly suggest renting a golf cart, even though we had rented a Jeep to drive to Hopkins. Douglas, the owner, was an excellent communicator and had multiple suggestions on where to go and what to do. We had a fantastic snorkeling experience where we were able to see unbelievable aquatic life. Sharks, fish, manatees, stingrays, etc. The house provides identification charts of all types for us to identify our sightings. We all loved that! During our 4 day stay, we visited almost every restaurant and shop in Hopkins. Hopkins is very SAFE! It’s still small enough to leave shopping bags in your golf cart, park it and visit beach spots without worry of personal belongings going missing. Highly recommend this area of Belize! Our next excursion was San Pedro…bustling with tourists with a high crime rate. So happy we were able to experience the small town life of Belize first. Thank you to Douglas, Antony and Dana!

Peaceful spot
Great space with plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms for our whole party of two families traveling together. Hopkins is a great town with history and a bit more culture and still a safe and welcoming place for tourists. The extra air mattress didn’t work and that was a disappointment but other than that we loved our stay.

Great place on the beach
We had a great stay during our few day trip to Hopkins. Dougs place has kayaks, bikes, even fishing poles. We met the neighbor in the large house at the end of the street, he was very friendly and gave us a bunch of additional tips for the area.

Fabulous experience in a lovely house!
Habaru is a great property - the inside is well-appointed and spacious and everything is well-maintained. The kitchen is equipped with most everything needed to cook full meals. The kayaks are a great bonus activity. The only neutral comment (which has nothing to do with the house) is that the water has minimal surf movement, so if you have kids looking to ride waves, it's not going to happen. This is offset by how the clear water often allows for good snorkeling right off the beach. The location is great - easy access to town, the Sittee River marina, and other areas of interest. We also highly recommend contacting Hopkins Auto Rental if you need a vehicle or a shuttle ride from Belize City; Sadie and her staff/family were easy to contact, had everything ready for us, and also served as great tour guides.

We live in Western Canada and have developed a love of Belize, and Hopkins in particular, over the last fifteen-odd years. Habaru House is our family vacation get-away, but we'd like for you to be able to share our experience too.
Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?
We love its location in Hopkins: close enough to the Village to be handy to restaurants and groceries, but far enough away to "get out of town" and relax. Our water front is lovely and shallow: great for children, kayaking and wading! You have to walk a ways to get out to swimmable depths, but it's worth the walk!
