- Please close the Lanai door when your gone the rain comes in the door and will ruin the carpet.
- Do Not hang your swimwear on the Lanai railing. There is a small clothes line over the bathtub.
Kauai family vacation 2019
We had a family of 16 plus a 3 month old baby in 4 units in Pono Kai. We all had a wonderful time.
Sorry it rained so much but we managed to enjoy Kauai between showers
Pono Kai in Kapaa Nov-Dec 2019
The best part about the property is the fabulous ocean view. The condo has a good sized lanai with a direct ocean view. The worst part is the lack of air conditioning; however there were only a few days out of 14 that the air was still and the condo was too hot. Otherwise there were good trade winds and as long as you keep the windows and doors open, and the fans going, the condo was cool enough. The price we paid was good -- I think it would have been more had there been AC.
The unit itself is somewhat dated. I understand the owner is installing a new counter top and carpeting soon. I hope they replace the furniture too.
There were lots of "extras" in the room, such as an ice chest, boogie boards and other beach equipment. Strangely though, there was not adequate toilet paper, paper towels or dishwasher soap, which we bought ourselves. The box fan that was there was also broken, but had not been removed, making it feel like we were missing out.
Overall cleanliness could be improved. We moved a piece of furniture (shelf unit) and found a note underneath from someone who had stayed there in 2017.
I had read in previous comments that communication with the owners was a problem. I had no concerns, although I did not receive the access code until the day before.
All in all, it was good value for the price we paid. I would stay there again, but would opt to pay more for a place with AC and in better overall condition.
Nice seaside location
This would have been an easy 4 star review, if communication had been better. After arriving around 11pm at the front desk, dreary from the 6hr flight, we were told that they had no record of our reservation. Because this is an owner ran unit, the desk could do nothing to help us. After a nightmare of trying to contact the owner, or find anyone who might be able to reach the owner. we ended up having to pay for a different room for the night. That was 1am.... The owner was helpful the next morning, and we were able to get in our room, but the damage had already been done. I have to say that the people at the desk could not have been nicer. They tried everything to help us. We were told that the owner of the unit was supposed to supply them with the information needed to check us in. I can't say if this is the way it always is. I can only judge from this one experience. As for the room, you couldn't ask for a better location to stay, and wake up to each morning. I just wish that 1/7th of if had not been taken away from us! The view is amazing. The room was clean and nicely appointed. Although it did have a noticeable musty smell, but nothing that you cannot live with. Be warned, there is no air conditioning, and to get the benefit of the trade winds, you must keep your bedroom windows open, which are directly accessible from the main pathway for the rooms that everybody walks by. If you're comfortable with that, no problem. My wife was not. So we spent some VERY warm nights there with fans blazing. If you're familiar with Kapa'a, then you know about the silly traffic. It's only getting worse over time. As the desk about the best times to go north, or south, and plan accordingly. I can't stress this enough. If you fail to do this, you will spend a good part of your vacation sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. I might add, don't be a lousy visitor!! On Kaua'i it is customary to let people in traffic, who are waiting on the side roads. Yes, even if you've been in it for an hour! We cannot let the aloha be stripped from this beautiful island! We've been coming here for years, and there is not a more beautiful, friendly, wonderful place, in the world.
The location is great in the middle of everything and the view is beachfont as shown. Ceiling fans are a must as this unit has no air conditioning. Our stay was hot and humid so we could not circulate enough air to sleep in the bedroom. Owners were responsive in regards to replacing a couple of ceiling fans that had stopped working before we arrived. There are many extras provided for your use, which is very nice and welcoming. Overall a good experience as we are pretty low maintenance. If you are more uptight, this would not be a good fit! Mahalo Kimberly and Carolyn!
Excellent town to stay!
We enjoyed Kapaa very much and the Pono Kai Resort centrally located. We could walk to several different places. We had a calm beach at a walking distance and a swimming pool, which was great. The apartment is big enough for three adults. We had a few problems and the owner answered rapidly.
