Sweet cottage but very tired and unsuitable for elderly
A sweet cottage but very tired and not up to the standard of other properties we have rented in the area.
Bathroom wasn't clean with mould around bath, hair in plugs and shower curtain disgusting.
Bathroom needs revamp as far too small - my children (5ft10in) could barely stand for a shower and bath far too short in length.
Garden is sweet but would have been even nicer if it was attended to - overgrown etc.
The car parking / access isn't great, particularly as building works being done two cottages down and so eight builders vans parking in a small area and the back path to entrance completely covered with building materials!
Overall, it was a last minute choice, served the purpose for sleeping but would I stay again? Probably not.
Not up to norfolk hideaways ususl standards,Bathroom very small and no wc upstairs a major drawback. The stairs are dangerous for anyone{children/adults/elderly. However the location was good though parking tricky when other 4-5 cars are parked in the lane.

Lovely cottage had plenty of character and was as described. Clean and well equipped- even had towels which we werenât expecting! A torch would have been helpful when taking dog out early/late in the dark!
Overall a nice cosy break between Christmas and New Year - lovely long beach walks and good pubs close by
Gravel Hill is situated in a quiet location just off the road overlooking the church yard. There is a pleasant walk down a small track through the fields of about a mile to the village of Burnham Overy Staithe and the estuary where there is also a good pub. The beach is a further mile walk away but well worth the effort. We took our dog so didn't mind the walks and the beaches where huge when the tide was out so there was plenty of space for him to run around.
We found the cottage to be well equipped and comfortable but the staircase is very steep and quite difficult to use especially carrying cases up and down. I wouldn't recommend it for the elderly or small children as you have to be quite nimble to negotiate them. Although there is a shower attachment on the taps in the bathroom there is no bracket on the wall to hang it so you have to just hold it over you when taking a shower. I presume this is down to the restriction of the low ceiling which makes standing up and showering difficult for taller people.
There is a pleasant little garden at the front of the cottage to sit in but found it a shame that we couldn't let our dog out to enjoy it off the lead as it is not secure and the road is quite close. It wouldn't take much to put a gate at the end of the garden and a small dividing fence or wall between the properties as the other cottages in the row have done. This is definitely an improvement I would recommend to the owners to make the garden safer for pets or smaller children.
We enjoyed our stay in Norfolk very much and found the cottage to be in the perfect location for visiting the lovely towns along the coast and taking a boat trip out to see the Seals at Blakeney Point.
4 Gravel Hill is a basic cottage with quirky features, very steep stairs - unsuitable for the less mobile as itâs more like a climb. Really lovely quiet location near the sea with lovely walks. The only criticism would be that it was dirty on our arrival and really needed a deep clean. We found dog hairs all over sofa and floor and medication which our 1 year old found ok the bedroom floor.
would like to stay for longer, a week no where near long enough
clean tidy and comfortable, this lovely little cottage is in a prime location for local shops, pubs and beaches. Spent many hours walking my golden Labrador Bonny, and she spent long periods in the sea . The countryside around this little hamlet is stunningly beautiful and will hold memories for a long long time.
4 Gravel essentially needs a new bathroom or at least a wall mounted shower. We are in our mid 60s and fit.Less fit people would not have been able to use the bath.
The stairs are an issue. The design of a Norfolk winder staircase should be stressed as again less agile people would not have managed.
Our main problem with the cottage was the garden. A dog friendly property should have a secure garden and the details of this one say it is fenced and hedged. This is not the case. It is wide open and very close to a road. Not at all suitable for a dog.
Had we known this we would not have booked this property.
We have booked with Norfolk Hideaways many times and will continue to do so as they are normally very reliable.
Gravel Hill needs serious attention.
Tiny but characterful cottage with well-equipped kitchen and cosy bedrooms. A mile ir so ftom Burnham Market so well located. We would stay again.
Note: The steep, narrow staircase and tilted upstairs floors make it unsafe for children, the nervous, or anyone not in good health!
Do check Google street view beforehand and take a torch - it is up a grassy track with no street lighting and you won't find the keybox!
Excellent little cottage. Very well equipped and supplied.
Main issue is the unsafe access up narrow stairs (which are almost a ladder), to the bedrooms, especially when the only toilet is downstairs. Anyone with mobility problems should not book.
Only door/window which has not been replaced with modern double glazing, is the front door which is from garden to sitting room - ok when weather is good, but a potentially a source of drafts in cold seasons.
We had one problem during our stay, which was the failure of hot water and heating from the oil fired boiler. Service was very prompt and efficient, with an engineer within a couple of hours of ringing the out of hours number - many thanks - but the guy told us the same problem had occurred a few times and the owner knew about it, but had not had the fault fully corrected.
Walking route to Burnham Market is a good path 95% of the way, and safe to use, but the walk towards the coast needs to be on a busy narrow road with no path, which we did not attempt with a baby in a buggy. There is a track towards Burnham Overy Staithe windmill part way down the road, but we didn't try it.
We did enjoy our week, and would return.
Lovely cottage and in a good location.
The only down side was there was no shower and the stairs were very steep.
The garden also was in need of mowing.
Other than that a fantastic base for a wonderful stay in north Norfolk.
Satisfactory on the whole, apart from the details below.
Television needs attention. We reported it but no engineer came. We were only able to Watch bbc1. It probably needs a new freeview box.
Garden needs tidying up. It would make such a difference and a gate on to make it dogproof.
No washing line.
I washed the kitchen window on the first day. Don't know when it was last done.
The microwave is rusty and needs replacing.
The double bed needs a new mattress (double). We left a day early as it was so uncomfortable.
A lovely quiet location. The cottage had just been painted and was well presented. The stairs are quite steep and very very small at the top so could be a problem for small children or elderly. But all in all it was well equipped and in easy reach of the coast. We would return.
