Vielen Dank
Walking through narrow alleyways, tunnels and low passageway doors, you eventually arrive at a dilapidated entry door. The photos on HomeAway flatter the renovation. The front door opens into a small and cramped kitchen which consists of a short bench upon which is a portable gas cooker sitting on one end and a coffee maker on the other end that disappears under the staircase. The walls and floor are stained and look dirty. The rendered walls and unglazed tiles make cleaning difficult - there is always dust. The small sitting room off the kitchen is dark (no window) and has a stale, musty smell. Up the narrow, winding stairs are two bedrooms- both small. The main one has a small window that opens to the adjoining house - no direct light or breeze. They feel stale and oppressive, and smell of cigarettes. The bathroom and toilet are combined into one small room. The shower sprays out over the toilet. There are no towel rails or soap holders. The room looks and feels dirty. The only hand basin is located outside in the stairwell. There is a roof-top terrace which is nice in the early mornings and later evenings - too hot at any other time, The internal staircase is narrow and the bedroom A/C units drip water directly onto them. Care must be taken due to the lack of headroom. In summary, this is a real 'no frills' Moroccan Medina house. Where some see charm and authenticity, we could not get past the cramped, dank conditions that Western society has long since moved away from.
Being inside the Medina, you need to walk your luggage in, under direction of the landlord's rep - it has no actual address, so you could not find it without direction. The location does provide quick access to most parts of the Medina (Souks, tannery, Medersa and Djemaa el Fna Square). You need to map your way out so you can get home. Walking the alleys of the Medina is marred by the badgering of young boys, people protesting about photos and the constant traffic of bikes and motorcycles. It soon becomes a chore rather than an adventure.
We booked for 5 days, but left after 2. We relocated into a hotel in Hivernage (10 minutes walk from the Medina). From there we could experience the Medina without sacrifice of living standard. We rate it 2 stars against Western standard.
If you are considering this property, you need to seriously think about how you would cope with the conditions. We think it is much better to visit the Medina rather than live in it.
