STRONG CIGARETTE SMOKE SMELL
THE APARTMENT REEKED OF CIGARETTE SMOKE. This was listed as a non-smoking property but the stench hit us the second we opened the door. We tried airing it out while we went to dinner but it didn't really help. It may technically be non-smoking now but either it wasn't always or the smell is leaking in. It was worse in the entry, living room and front bedroom. The master bedroom was not too bad. We could not stay here and had to move to a hotel (our family has bad allergies and one member has asthma). I am still fighting the host and VRBO to get some kind of compensation. The host went in 3-4 days later and admitted they also smelled the smoke but didn't think it was bad enough to leave the property (obviously we did not agree). I understand that the host would lose revenue but we should be entitled to a full or partial refund. My experience with VRBO customer service has been quite poor as well (sympathetic agents but no follow-up when escalated). And, to anticipate the inevitable counter-comment from the host: why, if the smoke issue was not what we reported, would we voluntarily move to a hotel and pay 1500? We knew full well we may not get a refund, but HAD to do it for the health of the family. Final comment: we have been renting from VRBO properties for over twenty years without previously registering a complaint. This is the first property we ever had to exit for our health or safety.
