White Lotus in Carriacou

Carriacou made the New York Times Best Places to Go in 2024, and if you've never heard of it, that's exactly the point. This tiny island off Grenada remains one of those rare places where the Caribbean still feels undiscovered. Small, secluded coves with only your footprints in the sand. And the sunsets paint the entire sky in shades of amber, rose, and violet that seem too vivid to be real.

White Lotus sits high in the hills above Hillsborough Bay, a contemporary house built in 2022 that captures everything magical about this place. From here, you have 180-degree views that sweep across the bay and the rest of Carriacou. Small islands dot the water below. Union Island sits in the distance. At night, the Milky Way sprawls across the sky in a way you've probably forgotten was possible.

The house was designed by its owner, who has been coming to the island for over 40 years and understands that Caribbean living happens outdoors. Every detail feels intentional. Modern without being cold. Minimal without being spare. The kind of place where you can settle in immediately and feel completely at ease.

The main deck wraps around the entire front of the house, becoming the heart of everything. There's a full outdoor living room with deep, comfortable couches where you can spend entire afternoons reading or napping in the breeze. Two additional seating areas give everyone space to spread out. A massive dining table seats twelve, perfect for long dinners that stretch into the night. The kitchen opens directly onto the deck through wide doors, making it easy to move between inside and out. It's spacious and modern, with everything you need: good knives, an induction stovetop, a microwave, a food processor, and plenty of counter space. There's a walk-in pantry and a kitchen island with stools for eating or chatting while preparing meals.
Inside, there's also a comfortable den with couches, a television, and an office area. It's the kind of space you appreciate when you need a break from all that sunshine, or when you have to pretend you're working for a few hours.

Three bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. The master has a king bed. One has twins. The third has a queen. They're all designed with the same clean, minimal aesthetic as the rest of the house. White walls, comfortable beds, modern and local art that brings character to the spaces. Room for six people to spread out without feeling on top of each other.

The lower level is where things get even better. Another deck surrounds a plunge pool that seems to float above the bay. Loungers line the deck. There's an outdoor shower where you can rinse off after a day at the beach. The same spectacular views, just from a different angle. The gardens around the property are lush and tropical, with a grill and additional outdoor dining tucked into the greenery. You could spend an entire week here and never eat inside.

The beauty of Carriacou is that it's small enough to explore easily but large enough to surprise you. Markets in Hillsborough sell fresh fish that was caught that morning and produce grown on the island. The Round House, Green Roof Inn, and Paradise Beach Club serve food that makes you want to become a regular. Remote beaches with names you'll learn, like Anse La Roche and Petite Carenage, are less than a ten-minute drive away. You'll have most of them to yourself.
