Mildredâs Veranda Retreat, At Dueling Sisters Inn, Cozy and comfortable
NEW TO VRBO! -Once the private quarters of Miss Mildred âSavannahâs most mysterious, green-thumbed sisterâthis upstairs flat was her sanctuary in the sky. She sipped tea on the veranda, tended herbs on the sun deck, and penned letters never sent. Today, her elegant 2BR retreat welcomes travelers seeking quiet beauty, Southern soul, and a touch of legend. Set in an 1848 home just two blocks from Forsyth Park, this is more than a stayâitâs a story you get to live in.
An 1848 Savannah Sanctuary in the Home of Two Feuding Twins
2BR âą 2BA âą Private Veranda + Sun Deck âą Stylish, Storybook Escape
Before Savannah was a city of cocktails and cobblestones, it was home to two twin sistersâMildred and Myrle Westâborn within minutes of each other, but destined to grow into reflections in reverse.
When their father, a wealthy cotton broker, faced the impossible task of favoring neither daughter, he made a decision whispered about for generations: he built them twin townhomesâside by side, matching in every detailâso that neither could claim superiority. Each had her own front door, her own staircase, her own parlor, and her own path- her own way of living.
But a home can only hold so much peace.
Myrle filled hers with music, guests, and grand soirées.
Mildred filled hers with herbs, handwritten recipes, and the scent of gardenia on warm breeze.
They remained close their entire livesâtwo hearts separated only by a brick wall and differing ideas of joy.
Welcome to Mildredâs Flat â Her Upper Sanctuary
Located on the second floor of her beloved home near Savannah's famed Forsyth Park, this elegant 2-bedroom, 2-bath flat was once Mildredâs private quarters: her sleeping rooms, her recipe-writing office, her morning veranda, and her treasured sun deck where she tended rooftop herbs.
(The lower level was her front parlor, private dining room, water closet, trunk room, screened porch and private courtyard- where her pet chicken lived...Miss Percy...we aren't joking)
Today, itâs been carefully restored as a stylish yet soulful retreat, honoring her creative spirit and quiet grace.
Step Into Mildredâs Upper Flat
Once her private living quartersâwhere she read, wrote, and baked the biscuits neighbors still talk aboutâthis 2-bedroom, 2-bath flat offers space, soul, and a view into Savannahâs golden past.
Soaring 14-foot ceilings, perfect for soft breezes and slow summer fans
Original 1848 heart pine floors, polished by time and barefoot mornings
Historic wood-frame windows in every room, flooding the flat with natural light
Two graceful bedrooms, designed for rest, reverie, and long morning lie-ins
Two full bathrooms, including a modern shower
A fully equipped kitchen, built for real cooking
Private front veranda, Mildredâs favorite perch for books, tea, and neighborhood watching
Back sun deck garden, where she grew mint, rosemary, and the best tomatoes in Chatham County
A cozy parlor, where we imagine she dried flowers and perfected her biscuit recipe -originally her upper sitting room.
Modern amenities, gently tucked in: fast WiFi, smart TV, washer/dryer, parking on property.
The Story of the Sisters
Known locally as the Dueling Sisters, the nickname was more playful than true. Mildred and Myrle werenât rivalsâthey were reflections. Myrle wore silk and told stories. Mildred wore linen and planted them.
Their father built their matching homes to keep them close. And though their paths divergedâone toward the garden, one toward the danceâthey always loved each other, and always stayed side by side.
Today, their twin townhomes are a single lovingly preserved building, home to four distinct flats, each with its own tone. But this oneâMildredâs Upper Flatâis for those who appreciate light, stillness, and the kind of beauty that comes with peace.
Yes⊠Some Say Sheâs Still Here
Now, we donât claim itâs haunted, but letâs just say Mildred was never one to leave things undone. Guests have reported lights turning off with perfect timing, books gently falling open to her favorite pages, or catching the scent of rosemary or biscuits.
But donât worryâif sheâs still around, sheâs only here to make sure youâre treating her space right. Mildredâs presence is warm, soft, and respectful⊠and honestly? She probably just wants to see how your biscuits turn out...
Miss Stacy, the Housekeeper (and Honorary Innkeeper)
Every good Southern home has someone who keeps things running, and for us, thatâs Miss Stacy. Part caretaker, part magician, part honorary innkeeperâshe knows every creaky stair and curtain rod in this 1848 home. She works hard to make each stay feel special⊠but as sheâll tell you with a laugh, this house has a mind of its own.
You may find a missing washcloth tucked mysteriously into a pillowcase (she swears they hide from her). A curtain might refuse to hang just right. But Miss Stacyâs heart is always in the right placeâher cleaning is thorough, her notes are kind, and her joy for this place is real.
She says Mildred still fluffs the pillows behind her, and frankly, we believe her.
A Place to Breathe
Located in Savannahâs Victorian District just two blocks from Forsyth Park, this home is close to all the charm, shops, and strolls you could wantâbut far enough to let you exhale.
Pour a glass of wine on the veranda. Watch the wind dance through the curtains. Listen closely. Mildred always did.- Actually if you say a little something to Mildred, she just may answer back.
Other Things to Note:
This home was built in 1848, and while sheâs been lovingly cared for, she isnât perfectâand we wouldnât have it any other way.
You might hear the pine floors creak, the windows rattle slightly in a storm (they are original and single pane), or notice that the house seems to breathe with the seasons. Thatâs not a flawâitâs the beauty of staying in a home with soul. When it is 100 degrees outside, the modern HVAC's will struggle to get the unit to 70 degrees.
Miss Stacy, our dear housekeeper (and honorary innkeeper), does her best to keep everything spotless. That said, sheâll be the first to tell you: the house sometimes hides things from her. A dish towel may end up in a pillowcase. A washcloth might go missing and reappear in a lamp shade. She swears they play tricks on herâand frankly, so did Mildred.
This flat is a place for guests who appreciate charm over perfection, character over cookie-cutter. If you love homes with history, heart, and a whisper of legend, youâll fit right in.
