À propos de cet hébergement

Last Hurrah, Female Hogan

Positively, completely, unequivocally AMAZING

If you truly want to unplug and just walk off into the Utah canyons, book this place. Tom and his staff took care of everything. We didnt have a need/want for anything. The Colorado River is right there. The female hogan was comfy and well stocked. The second we drove off, i wanted to go back.

Incredible family vacation

This was one of the best and most unique places we’ve ever visited. The entire family absolutely loved the 4 nights we spent there. Lots of hiking and exploring, kayaking, disc golf, and family time. The kids spent hours looking at the stars every night and never asked for their phones or IPads. It’s the perfect place for a relaxing, mental re-set.A few things to know:1) Plan 60min-90min for the drive from Moab depending on your vehicle and how comfortable you are on steep, bumpy roads. We have a Subaru Outback, and it was no problem.2) Purchase all of your food before you arrive so you don’t have to go back to town.3) The hogan is well stocked with supplies.....mini fridge, coffee maker and coffee, cooking/grilling utensils, silverware, plates, spices, oil, etc. Of course it’s not high end stuff, but it works great.4) No need to bring camping chairs.....there are 5 zero-gravity chairs plus a table and chairs to eat outside.5) There is plenty of firewood provided.6) There is only a couple of free power outlets to plug things in. Bring a Jackery or other portable power station if needed. This is such a great place. I can’t recommend it enough. We’ll definitely be back next year!!

Perfect!

We really loved our stay in this little hut. There were 4 of us, 2 were children. The only thing we would do different is park the truck and trailer down into town and drive the RZR up to the hut. I hope we get to return because the location was wonderful and the view was beautiful!

Peaceful quiet-remote is understatement

Really enjoyed our stay- didn’t expect the totally remote locale and loved it! Enjoyed our own canyon for three days! Kayaking on river was fun and waking up to sunshine over the ridge was amazing!

Amazing experience

If you are looking for an " off the grid" experience, this is it. Communication with Tom leading up to the trip was great, and property exactly as described. The Hogan had everything we needed for our stay, and we enjoyed the fire pit during the cool evenings. The Hogan had a propane heater, but we brought our own blankets, so did not need to use it. I would recommend buying all the groceries/ food/ drinks that you will need during your stay BEFORE you get there because you won't want to leave once you are there. The drive over Hurrah pass is not something I would want to do every day, but Tom communicated the directions clearly before our trip, so we knew what we were getting into. Colin was great with helping us get settled in, and gave us a walkie talkie to get in touch with him during our stay if we needed anything. It was truly a memorable vacation, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique experience.

Last Hurrah

If you are looking for a unique place to get away from civilization and have an adventure, than look no further! If you are afraid of heights and do not like off roading drives, then you should pass on this one. The drive took us about 2 hours to get to the base camp. It was white knuckle driving as the "road" was very schetchy the closer you got away from Moab. The drive back out only took us an hour as we felt more confident that we would live to tell about it!! The hogan is very unique. Bring everything you might need with you as there is no running to the store. The hogan has futon mattresses and bedding is provided. There was an assortment of odds and ends silverware and dishes to use. Nothing matchy or special. Your cooking is either microwave or the propane grill. Tom is a pretty low key kind of guy who kind of acts like "I don't understand why people think the drive out is a challenge". He feeds local wildlife every evening and you are welcome to watch the show- raccoons and foxes came the evening we were there. The scenery is breathtaking. You are far enough away from Moab, that the stars are magnificent. We saw the Milky Way on a clear night. We drove to the wind caves that were really cool to explore. There is also Frisbee golf courses available to use. There is also hiking around the property that was fun to do. All in all, we were glad we made the trip out to this remote spot!!

A unique and amazing experience

This trip was a once in a life time opportunity.Going over Hurrah Pass was breathtaking. Seeing all the canyons was amazing . I will say if you are afraid of heights the switchbacks may not be your cup of tea. Once getting to the property we were stick by the expansive desert vistas. Our host, Tom was a very interesting man. He was a straight talker but also clearly loved his land and told some amazing stories of experiences he has had . We were able to rent 4 x 4 's and explore the surrounding areas which was amazing . We stayed in the Hogan and it was so unique. If u want luxury this is not the place for u as u have to bring all supplies in and it is clearly not a hotel with amenities you would get there . However, if you are up for a true, special adventure that you will never forget , I highly recommend this ! PS- I recommend having a vehicle like a 4 runner to get to and from the property

Unique and relaxing

Had a great time staying in the hogan. Despite the heat of mid-summer, it was cool enough at night to sleep peacefully, after taking in the unbelievable stars. Yes, it is a bit hard to get to, but once you’re there, there’s no need to return to the crowds at Moab— everything you need is there. We borrowed one of Tom’s UTVs to go to wind caves, kayaked and swam in the river, hiked around the beautiful property, and enjoyed the peace and quiet.

Hogan stay

The location was gorgeous! It did take more than an hour to get out there it says an hour but it actually took us about 2, if you want to make sure you don’t wreck your vehicle going over hurrah pass I would recommend giving yourself 2 hours. The host was incredible and very nice. The hogan was very cool, definitely rustic. Overall it was great.

Remote desert oasis

Amazing property. Remote, rustic, beautiful architecture. Emphasis on remote, which is hard to find these days in the Moab area. I loved it. Fantastic hosts who went the extra mile to make my stay amazing and assist in guiding my vehicle up and over Hurrah pass. Thank you. Can’t wait to go back.

Perfect retreat

The hogan was exactly what I thought it would be - a perfect retreat from the outside world. The road to get there is challenging, but a true sense of accomplishment when you do! Loved the solitude it provided. Actually enjoyed cooking my meals on the grill. My only wish would have been to have another place to wash dishes besides the one and only shared bathroom! Overall, a great place and I would go back.

Incredible Experience

It began with an indescribable view on the drive up to our Hogan. Be prepared, it's rocky but Tom let us know this ahead of time. When we arrived we encountered Kobae, the tortois. He enjoyed chasing our dogs around for a bit which has us all laughing for quite some time afterwards. Our Hogan was exactly as captured in the photos with the exception of the beauty you see in every direction. We encountered wildlife daily including long horned sheep, lizards, chipmunks and vast array of birds. We slept comfortably every night without the use of the air conditioning that was available. You must spend the day on the beach and take the side by side to chickens peak. As a family we vacation annually but this trip is the only one that had my children begging to stay longer. We hiked and explored daily, enjoyed coffee and hot coco each morning as the sun came up and the night sky was something that no picture can capture. If your looking for an experience that captures nature, scenery and exploration than this is the place. Some things to make sure you bring: food, sleeping bags, jug of water, tin foil (I found it easier to cook on the flat plate of the grill) and binoculars. We will be back, thank you Tom!!

Off the grid

Truly an incredible place if you are looking to get off the grid and decompress. Derive in 4x4 was awesome, kids loved it! So much hiking and exploring to do in the area it would take a lifetime to see it all. Pack in all your supplies driving out takes time, best to come complete and turns off electronics!!

Just a nice guy who knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place fifteen years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
