À propos de cet hĂ©bergement

Last Hurrah, Male Hogan

Bring food and anything you'd like to drink beside water. No stores out here.
The road is mostly dirt. Normally you won't need 4-wheel drive but you will need six or so inches of ground clearance. Most SUVs, Jeeps, trucks.
If height an issue there will be issues up and down Hurrah Pass on the way here. I’m about 17 miles from Moab and it takes most about an hour.

Remote and Relaxing

I loved this place so much. I stayed in the male hogan for 2 days, and I'm already itching to visit again! The dirt road wasn't for the faint of heart, but it's definitely doable with 4WD. My 2019 Jeep Cherokee had no issues.

Once in a lifetime experience

We are so grateful Tom shared his property with us. The journey to the place itself is amazing, the property views are astounding, and we originally thought we would explore the town of Moab and other hikes during our stay but there was way more to do on Toms property so we stayed there to hike, cook, relax, and play disc golf. Tom had plenty of recommended hikes and it was nice to have our dogs with hiking while encountering very few people on hikes that compare to National Parks. Highly recommend this property!

Incredible location for semi-camping style

Absolutely gorgeous, incredibly remote lodging. Bring all your food and supplies, there is camping-style cooking setup (using outdoor grill as stove). Amazingly, even has a small fridge and a microwave, all powered by solar. It's possible to drive in with 2WD (I saw a couple standard sedans parked at the main lodge), but you better REALLY know how to drive if you bring one! I drove a jeep but never came close to needing 4WD low, it was quite easy in 4WD high.

What an adventure!

If you are looking for five star accommodations with a gourmet restaurant on the premises, then this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for a backcountry adventure in some beautiful country, then this is the place for you. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating to visitors. While they have provided a lot of necessities, it would be best to plan as if you were going camping and be as self contained as possible when it comes to food and supplies. A fridge and microwave are available but we did most of our cooking outdoors. The hogan was as described and was very cozy for the two of us. It didn't get especially hot while we were there, but the hogan remained cool. Seasonal river conditions weren't really optimal but there was plenty of other activities to keep us busy. Hosts are very knowledgable about the local area and gave great suggestions on what to do and see. At times it was so quiet that you would think that you had gone deaf. From the property you can see Canyonlands across the river. Short hikes will take you into beautiful red rock canyons to explore. If you have a good 4WD there are tons of places to explore. The drive in and out was an adventure in itself and isn't for the faint of heart. I would highly recommend a high clearance vehicle, 4WD probably isn't absolutely required but I personally would not take the family sedan there. Overall it was a perfect getaway trip for us and we are already making plans to come back again.

Desert Gem

I can't express enough how special our stay was at Base Camp. If you love the quiet of the desert, seeing the endless stars of the Milky Way, or experiencing the wonders of Moab without the crowds then you will treasure your stay here. Tom is an interesting character and gracious host, as are his indispensable staff Collin and Lidia. Embrace the adventure of driving in through Hurrah Pass and you will not be disappointed. Base Camp is a gem in the desert.

great space!

Loved our time at Basecamp. The road scared me but after doing it 4 times...we got more comfortable. There is a coffeemaker, coffee, and coffee filters....but no cups! fortunately for me (and everyone around me ), the guys next door had a cup for me to use. With coffee in hand and the great views I couldnt ask for more.

Chicken Corners!

We actually did love our stay here, though during the drive to get there, we were questioning our sanity! Once we safely arrived, we 100% enjoyed our time there. We had rented a high clearance vehicle, after having read previous reviews about the trek getting to the hogan, but we would have felt tons better had we rented a four wheel drive vehicle that was shorter coupled than the two wheel drive Suburban we had. We should have paid closer attention to those previous reviews! Once there, we really did enjoy our stay in the male hogan. Had some nice folks staying in the female hogan and we enjoyed visiting with them over a campfire in the evening. We had one day of all day rain, which was a bit of a bummer, but we just stayed in the hogan and got caught up on some reading, which we otherwise never seem to find time to do. The next day, we rented a 4x4 from Tom and drove out to Chicken Corners. We had a ball doing this and the views and scenery were awe-inspiring. And yes, we walked the path around the cliff at Chicken Corners!!! Would we do it all again? Yes we would - in a heartbeat!!! Thanks Tom, for a great time at your place!

Beautiful area!

Ideal for a quiet stay in a pristine, peaceful area. The drive over the Last Hurrah pass requires a vehicle with the right height clearance and the driver to be able to maneuver the bumpy, rocky, narrow road popular with the 4 wheeler community. Make sure you read the host's very accurate description of this trek before you commit. The hogans are cozy, warm and authentic. The male and female hogans share bathroom facilities in a separate building between them. The outdoor shower has the best view and hot water! If you stay in a hogan, pack as if you are camping. There will be linens, and a few dishes, etc though I recommend you bring basically everything you think you'll need such as flashlights and any personal supplies. The property is vast, and though the host could undoubtedly assist you if you forgot something crucial, it could take a bit before they can get it to you. The host and staff are great and in communication with everyone via walkie-talkies that they provide upon check-in. Stores for supplies are a long drive away. I wish I'd have asked the host if I could bring any supplies on my way in just to be nice and reduce a trip for them.

Secluded and Gorgeous!

The property is really unique. I wish we had more time to explore the area. To get to the property you do need a good off-road vehicle - the trail in is fun with a jeep. Nice little air conditioning unit in the hogan made sleeping much more comfortable. The stars were gorgeous at night. Thank you for being a great host!

It really is an adventure!

Getting there is interesting, they aren't kidding about the drive! But once there it's great! We stayed in the Hogans and were treated to awesome views from the shaded verandas. The interior of both Hogans were exactly as pictured. We were worried about the bathrooms but needn't be, the outdoor shower was powerful and there was a utility sink with everything needed to wash hands, clothes, or dishes. Even with no beach, swimming in the river was great. If we're in the area we would definitely consider staying there again (as long as we had a vehicle that can handle Hurrah Pass with us)!

Prepare for the drive!

The drive out from moab is something you should prepare for especially if you've never done any off road driving. The road is rough but the drive back is much easier just prepare for the drive up! The property was nice and peaceful and made the drive worth it. Tom was extremely friendly and had some cold beer in the fridge ready for us after the drive out. He was very helpful and ready to answer any questions we had or help us out if there was anything we needed. If you're looking for a place to just disconnect and relax away from the crowds or even people in general, I would highly recommend this property.

If you are looking for something different, and can handle getting back to basics, this is it.

My wife and I went for 3 days over New Year and we wanted to do a complete disconnection from TV, e mail, phones etc. Although internet was available at the main house (about 1 mile away) so you had emergency contact, we loved the isolation and the silence. The scenery was spectacular both in the day time and the stars at night. We had weather at both ends of the spectrum - crystal blue skies and bright sun, and snow and 2 degrees temperature overnight. Our host Tom was readily available by radio but we had no need to bother him. Tom was also very accommodating with allowing us to use some of the cooking facilities in the nearby cabin due to the cold temperatures. With background heat from the propane burner the hogan was perfectly warm. Follow the advice about the high clearance vehicle - you absolutely need it - and 4 wheel drive is only really needed if you expect snow. On the last day Tom was good enough to lead us out due to the snow.

The Hogan (mud hut) was awesome! Best experience we had on our whole trip! The driveway is the most scenic/beautiful fourwheeling experience! The Hogan was warm and was equipped with every thing we needed except food so get that BEFORE you head to the Hogan. Tom was very nice and a great host! Will deffinatly do it again!

Qui vous reçoit ?

Vous ĂȘtes reçu par Tom Higginson

Just a nice guy that knows who he is and where he's suppose to be.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

I was president and founder for 25 years of a large indoor soccer company. The managers worked really hard. We all did. I wanted to find a place to get away, where we could escape from the grind. I wanted something in the boonies. Driving to our Boise facility I saw people walk out of their homes, get in their canoes, and get in the Snake River. I need a river. Driving through West Texas coming back from our Houston and Austin facilities I saw folks walk out of their homes and get on their dirt bikes and on their atvs and take off down dirt trails. I need dirt trails.

Sometimes I would find a property that had some things, but not all things. Sometimes I’d find something new and the hunt would then grow more difficult with more requirements. Then, years later I hit the wall. I was done with 100 hour weeks and I needed an escape. I escalated my hunt for a property in the boonies. I started focusing on the four corners area central to most of our locations.

After looking at 50 or so properties one day my Moab real estate agent told me about a property on the other side of Hurrah Pass. I tried to get out here to view it in the BMW but in those days the road was rough and I tore the BMW all up.

Turns out Base Camp has everything and so much more. I bought this place fifteen years ago without knowing about the Wind Caves, Chicken Corner, Anti-Cline, Amasa Back, pottery sherds, arrowhead flakes, ancient dwellings, rock art, the critters of all kinds, dino tracks, fossils, all types of geology, the night sky, the quiet, the unlimited hikes and on and on. There has never been a day I haven’t appreciated what surrounds me. There never will be.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

Things to know:

You should bring your own food and anything you’d like to drink besides water. Pretty much everything else is here. It’s 17 miles from Moab and it will take most a little over an hour. Take the road between the side by side rental place and McDonalds. At stop sign go straight. River on right. Black top ends. Follow signs that say Hurrah Pass. You don't normally need four wheel drive but you should have at least six inches of ground clearance. Without it your vehicle and Mother Earth may have occasional inappropriate relationships. If height is an issue you will have lots of issues up and down Hurrah Pass. We are 2.7 miles down Hurrah. Turn right at Base Camp sign and the first left will take you to the lodge.

Things are not static. They don’t stay the same all the time. The road changes, a rock falls down, there is a rain storm, anything can change the road. It may be fine in the morning and deteriorate in the afternoon, for multiple reasons. I mention the beach, but sometimes I don’t have one during snow melt and slightly after and the locations of the beach could change. In June and early July generally we have mosquitoes but hardly got any this year depending on the high water mark. We have a Milky Way most nights but in December and January it’s more difficult to see than in mid summer. I have side by sides for guests to use but sometimes they break and go in the shop at the same time so I might not have one while you are here. I feed critters at night on the front porch of the lodge. Some nights some critters don’t come or they take a long time to come. I have no control over who shows up when. Kobae usually hangs out on the porch in March, April, May, and early June. Once it gets hot he retreats in his hole and I generally only see him once a day when he comes out to eat until end of August and then he’ll want to go hiking every day, for miles. He’s not here from mid November thru late February when he goes to San Diego for the winter.
