ABOUT THE SPA CITY OF SZCZAWNO-ZDRÓJ
Szczawno-Zdrój is one of the oldest health resorts (spa) in Lower Silesia. The town's name comes from the mineral waters referred to as "szczawy" - alkaline and alkaline-earthy waters containing, among other things, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. They have a wide range of healing and health properties, the best known being: Mieszko, Dąbrówka, Młynarz and Marta.
It is picturesquely situated at the foot of Chelmiec - the second highest peak of the Mountais of Wałbrzych after Borowa peak, with an observation tower and a cross commemorating 2000 years of Christianity. It is famous for its beautiful landscape, the Spa Park, the Swedish Park with its unique vegetation and the monuments of the spa, mainly 19th century architecture; these include: a complex of spa buildings (mineral water pump room, walking hall, theatre, original spa house, concert shell), villas and pensions and a spa hotel (house), Maria's manor house, walking hall, Anna's Tower from 1818, the "Dworzysko" complex - a historical building from 1845, a monument to the Ulans of the Polish-Italian Legion.
An interesting venue is the Spa Theatre, which hosts competitions, workshops, theatre performances, children's song reviews, meetings with authors of books for children and young people, as well as open-air concerts, and the biggest cultural event in the town is the International Henryk Wieniawski Festival, which is always held in June.
There are sports facilities in the city: Sports Hall with an athletics facility, indoor swimming pool "Dolnośląski Delfinek", ORLIK pitch, sports and recreation complex "Słoneczna Polana" with outdoor gym, playground, pavilion with climbing walls and tennis courts, and the Four Cross track - a very demanding cycling circuit with sharp bends, moguls, jumps and steep descents, artificially floodlit, where World Cup competitions are held.
SURROUNDINGS, HIKING, OUTDOOR AND SIGHTS
The immediate surroundings is very attractive, full of beautiful mountains, cycling and hiking trails, as well as historical monuments. The most popular are Książ Castle, the Old Mine in Wałbrzych, the observation tower on Giedymin Hill, the Aqua - Zdrój indoor swimming pool, the trail to Chelmiec peak, for the youngest - the Delfinek children's swimming pool, and on Sienkiewicza Street, close to the flat - a 2-minute walk towards the promenade - a playground.
For those who like intensive effort and love mountains we suggest to try to hike the so called "Wałbrzych ladder" - 80 km, 4000 meter ascents and 30 summits. Can be done in 1 day (for those who like ultra running) ( :) or spread over several days.
For cyclists - plenty of beautiful scenic cycle routes. Interestingly, a large number of peaks in the Sudetes can be climbed (even on an ordinary mountain bike, not necessarily an electric one) - e.g. Chełmiec, Wielka Sowa, Waligóra, Trójgarb, Rudawiec, Orlica, Jagodna.
For those who like sunrises and sunsets - observation towers, of which there are many: on Trójgarb, Borowa, Dzikowiec Wielki, Kalenica, Ruprechtice Szpiczak. On Wielka Sowa and Chełmec the towers are open at certain times and sometimes only on weekends, so I rather recommend the former. There is a map of observation towers in the flat.
Castles and palaces - there are plenty of them, it is worth knowing that almost 1/4 of Poland's castles are situated in Lower Silesia. In addition to the Książ Castle already mentioned, it is also worth visiting others, such as Grodno or Bolkow. In the apartment you can find a map of Polish castles to your disposal, so you will easily find them all.
Rock towns - the most popular are Adrspach in the Czech Republic and Szczeliniec Wielki and Błędne Skały in the Table Mountains, but we also recommend the less commercial and well-known ones, such as Głazy Krasnoludków (Boulders of Dwarfs), Starościńskie Skały in Rudawy Janowickie, Broumovske Steny and Kocici Hrad in the Czech Republic. These are great places for endless excursions in stone labyrinths. Many of these places are very popular with rock climbing enthusiasts due to their tens of metres high, almost vertical walls.
Other well-known places include the adits in Walim (the Riese complex), the underground towns of Osowka and Włodarz in the mysterious Owl Mountains, the Andrzejowka mountain hostel in the Stone Mountains, and the flooded quarry in Głuszyca Górna - still a little-known small reservoir for fishing, swimming or winterswimming.
And for lovers of abandoned and even haunted places (urbex)., this is a dream area - suffice it to mention Tottenburg - an abandoned mausoleum on a mountain very close to the centre of Wałbrzych, an abandoned huge 4-storey palace in Mokrzeszow with a chapel and corridors, the Haunted Manor Palace in Kochanow, the ruins of a sorting plant in Głuszyca Górna (the famous armchair suspended on a rope - unique in the whole country) or even. ...the Devil's House located an hour away by the railway line in Przedmoscie Święte (note: remember that the above-mentioned places may not be open to tourists and entering them requires an agreement with the owner or manager of the facility and is done at your own risk only).
In short, whether you are a lover of historical monuments, a fanatical mountain hiker with a backpack, a lover of beautiful landscapes who enjoys a cup of coffee at sunrise or sunset, a cyclist or whether you are passionate about the corridors of old, sometimes abandoned castles, whether you are travelling alone, with a partner or with children - you will certainly not be bored here!
Welcome - Jakub - the owner, entrepreneur, traveler, lover of mountains and cycling.
