Wonderful remote farmhouse

  • 5 de 5

Loved this house. We were 2 grannys' with 9 children, aged between 16 and 18 months and 2 dogs.

Weather wasn't very good but the children didn't care as they had plenty of room to play both inside and out.

The play barn was great and the children put on a talent show. (We laughed but the judges took it very seriously)

The house and the cottage were well equipped and comfortable. We all loved the kitchen as we could all gather round the table.

Initially we were taken aback by the instructions for the water source but once the children knew where it was and what to do it wasn't so much of a chore. Although it wasn't great walking up the hill when it had been raining and the midges were out.

The midges were no problem in the house but loved to nibble at bodies playing in the garden.

The road up to the house should be treated with great care but you shouldn't let it put you off.

Very, comfortable and remote house for 3 families

  • 5 de 5

We are three families (6 adults, 6 kids now aged 8-14) who take holidays together every other year - previously Crete, Brittany (twice) and Wales. We had a great week on Banlicken and Arran generally. Banlicken is very quiet, with lovely views across to Kintyre. The house is very comfortable. We appreciated the well-appointed kitchen (we like preparing big meals) and table we could all sit around. The bedrooms are very nice with comfortable beds. Some lovely pictures and ornaments give Banlicken a nice homely feel. The kids spent a lot of time playing table-tennis. Another loo in the main house would have been the icing on the cake!

The track is memorable and not for the faint-hearted. It fords a small river and was at the limit of our low-slung skoda - so mostly the passengers had to walk.

One of the reviews here says there isn't a restaurant nearby, but since that was written the Cafe Thyme has opened a couple of miles down the road - good food, big portions, children's playground, rabbits. Worth a visit. There are lots of nice walks for youngish children, including a particularly nice one around Lochranza (buy lunch at the Sandwich Shack). Bring your own frying pan for making bacon rolls on the beach - an adventuresome and steep walk down from the house.

Family fun in Arran

  • 5 de 5

Just had a super long weekend at Banlicken, 3 families, 3 nights. Banlicken was perfect. What an adventure the children had from the start, opening the gates and through the ford. Such excitement. The house was super, we all had our own little area to sleep and retreat to if needed. We cooked up some great meals in the large well equipped kitchen, sat around the cosy fire in the living room, reading, board games, and rugby for the men!! The children had the playbarn to work off some energy. A walk down to the shore with fantastic views and a very pretty sunset. Perfect.

amazing house

  • 4 de 5

Great location, magnificent view, peacefull, quite, isolated, unbelievable house, I Know Scotland for 25 years know, one of my best location, but forget about the road by car, we had a storm the first day, and could not cross the river (growing with the flood) threw the tiny road, you need a 4X4, but you can leave the car at the beginning of the road and walk.

Remote haven on a remote haven

  • 5 de 5

Wonderful week in Banlicken, which is a remote haven on the remote haven of Arran. Perfection. The property is approached along a long track with 2 gates and a ford to cross. This only seemed to improve the sense of occasion on each arrival and adds to its special location overlooking Kintyre. The property itself was perfect for a large family wanting space to enjoy themselves, seek quiet corners to study or read and not be on top of each other. The kitchen/dining room is a super social place for cooking, dining and debating. Bedrooms are stylish and all with super views of the sea. Highly recommended.

Arran itself is a great place for uncrowded and scenic walks on the coast, or in the mountains, where we also enjoyed climbing on Cir Mhor. Some of the best easy,to mid-grade granite climbing in the UK - South Ridge Direct, Souwester Slabs, Labyrinth...all fantastic.

Remote, restful and beautiful surroundings

  • 5 de 5

We spent the New Year period at Banlicken (2011) - and it was just what we were looking for. The journey up was eventful as we got stuck in the mud. I was flabbergasted when by father opened the boot and pulled out a garden spade of all things! (who on earth takes a spade on holiday - unless of the beach variety?!?), still it proved to be very useful and I just viewed it all as part of the adventure! When we arrived it was all worth it. If you love being remote and cosy then this is the place for you. We had taken a week's worth of provisions with us and didn't really venture out much. Cosy nights in front of the fire, lots of good wine and although we thought we had taken some really great fireworks for New Year's Eve, these were very much overshadowed by the spectacular views on the other side of the water across the Mull of Kintyre. What a show! A brilliant viewing point. Gorgeous countryside, even in the depths of winter - we had a further adventure travelling up the mountain to unblock the water inlet pipe - we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The kitchen has everything you need and with a large dining table. It turned out to be where we spent most of our time and also has lovely views out to sea. The "old folk" liked the fact that they could retire in peace to their own separate accommodation, when the children got too much (or the adults!). Fantastic.
