This is a historic mansion which sits on a bluff above the Illinois river. There are views of the Fox river dumping into the Illinois, the park below and the skyline of Ottawa. The whole group will be comfortable in this spacious and unique space.
The space This three story mansion has bedrooms on the top two floors. The first floor has a large living room with multiple areas for sitting and relaxing. There is a library, dining room and kitchen
Guest access Guests have access to the entire house, decks and lawn.
The house itself is gorgeous. It sits very close to a major thoroughfare and busy bridge. There can be much road noise at times. Rooms and bathrooms are great.
The Pope house is one of the most enjoyable properties that I have ever stayed at. Each room is appointed with beautifully crafted period furniture that makes you feel like you've stepped back into the 1900's - yet AC and wifi in all rooms like the 2020's. A beautiful and peaceful view of the Illinois River is seen from the porch. Plenty of spaces for gathering, cooking, eating, or taking time to yourself. I highly recommend this property and look forward to booking another stay.
Everyone in our family really enjoyed this house, we all had extra space to do our things. So many bathrooms , nice kitchen and plenty of dining space.
We also enjoy the beautiful view of the Illinois River while having our cookout or at night during bonfires.
Weâll definitely come back to this gorgeous home!
My friends and I all gather together every year for a long weekend. We like to rent out a large house we can all stay in and this place was amazing. It's large and spacious. It's very homey and comfortable. There are adequate bathrooms, or really more than that. The kitchen was good and well equipped. When we went into town, it was really close by. We had a blast and the owners made us all feel very comfortable. And the porch was great. The views from the house were also really really good. Excellent stay and would stay again.
Beautiful historic home! The host, Larry met us upon our arrival and gave us an enthusiastic tour of the place. You can see his love for it! There are interesting areas to be discovered all over this house! The deck outside overlooking the Illinois River and Historic Downtown Ottawa was a fun place to hang out for afternoon cocktails! Starved Rock State Park and it's many hiking options is just a 15 minute drive and you can walk across the river to downtown Ottawa and it's many dining and shopping options. Perfect setup!
It was a wonderful stay in the banks of the river Illinois, which give a nice atmosphere and calm.
The house is well arranged with all the amenities.
Larry ,the property owner, very nice, he explained about the history of house and gave us a nice house tour.
overall its worth it for a vacation with a group of people.
Our large family stayed over the weekend and was amazed by the property! Larry gave us a tour upon arrival and that was so cool to hear his love for the house and made us enjoy it more, making sure we spent time there. Sitting outside by the fire pit telling stories while overlooking the water was a great touch. Be careful as it is easy to get lost I side the house.
Wonderful Accommodations for a larger group in this very spacious home. Built in the 1920 this home has much of the original woodwork, craftsmanship and fixtures throughout which all of us thoroughly enjoyed along with antique furniture and fixtures from that era. Very large kitchen to prepare food in and large beautiful dinning room which the 12 of us enjoyed daily. Just wish we could be closer and come back to visit more often. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend this very unique home.
We stayed here to come together at Christmas for our family. This was the first year our parents were not able to host as they are in their 90âs and currently living at Pleasant View Lutheran home down the street. All 4 siblings and their families were able to stay and celebrate the holidays together. 4 generations! The host Larry was very accommodating, quick to respond and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. This home and the neighborhood itâs in is beautiful! We will continue to come here and celebrate the holidays as long as weâre able.
This is the most unique and wonderful property.

The Cora J Pope Home was was lovely. Larry took great care in adding personal touches to make it feel like a home. He responded to all our requests quickly and checked in to make sure we had everything we needed. There was lots of space to gather as a family and the deck overlooking the river was a perfect spot for relaxing!
The owners have done everything possible to make your stay at Pope House memorable. It is the second time our group of seven friends has had the privilege to book this entire home. We cannot describe the kindness shown by the host, Larry. He has lovingly restored this home and every inch shows fine craftsmanship and attention to detail. Our group enjoys preparing meals and inviting guests to join us; this home is the perfect setting. The kitchen allows several folks to cook together; a Blackstone Griddle was a great surprise. The living area is made for entertaining, with a lovely piano available. The antique touches, comfortable beds, beautiful views, and ample parking are not to be taken for granted. A real treasure!
