Wantara is a little haven in the city--- unique gardens, tastefully designed apartments (they thought of everything---including really comfy down pillows and duvets), and a good location with easy access to historic Quito. But the real treasures are the hosts. Both Wolfgang and Yannick were not only hosts but instant friends looking our for us---there to help navigate the city and give us great advice about how to best spend our time. Yannick gave us his WhatsApp and more than once helped get us out of a pickle created out of naive traveler mistakes. He patiently spent half a day with us, untangling a mess...! And then told us we could contact him about any advice throughout the rest of our trip around Ecuador. Amazing! We call him Saint Yannick! I would recommend this place to anyone, and will definitely stay here if I come back to Quito.
A beautiful place to stay. In this renovated old adobe residence there are several rooms to choose from. Safe and secure.
Most galleries and museums were still not open to the public, but there are many other areas to visit and explore.
From beginning to end Wantara is everything one would want for stay in Ecuador. Wolfgang and Andi have created a reaL « home away from home » Everything one would need or want is there. Our month was a n experience that will be treasured .
A lovely apartment with a great garden in old Quito
Just a few minutes walk to central old Quito. It's hilly there and u need walking shoes but it's the best easy to get around. Wantata suites are run by Andi and Wolfgang who are just a wonderful couple. Andi is an artist and horticulturaslist wit h great talent. Truly you home while there.
The Wantara Suite, located in the historical town of Quito, is a heaven of peace, beauty and quietness. We stayed for four nights and enjoyed every moment of our stay. The Suite Colibri was a wonderful apartment with all what is needed from kitchenware to an excellent bathroom (with a great shower!) and ample space for three persons. It was a delight to take our breakfasts in the garden while admiring colibris flying from flower to flower - and it should be noted that a nearby around-the-corner baker allowed for crispy croissants and delicious bread to be enjoyed at every breakfast. The owners, Wolfgang and Anne-Marie, are delightful and rightly proud of what they have accomplished with this old house and property. Their enthusiasm is contagious and it was lovely to talk to them, listening to their stories about how they transformed and brought back to live this remarkable place. Preparing dinners was nice as well and there were ample herbs to choose from in the garden to enhance the flavours of our dishes. The Wantara Suite is also very well located and one can reach the historical center on foot in a few minutes. The people supporting the various activities that are offered are also worth mentioning, in particular Marcelo and Christian, who will welcome you at the airport and also offer day trips to explore the scenery and landscapes around Quito. Leaving was the most difficult part of our stay, which tells a lot about how much we liked the place and how quickly we got attached to its many charms. Wantara means 'A Place with good Vibrations' in kichua and nothing describes this place better than this beautiful word.
My daughter and I stayed in Lagarto Suite for 5 nights while touring Quito and the surrounding area. I had never been to Ecuador and had no idea where to stay in Quito since there are many options. The owner of Wantara, Wolfgang, was very responsive and helpful in my email exchange with him regarding our possible stay at Wantara. Wolfgang and Annemarie were traveling to Europe for the month of May and left care of the suites with friends Pierre and Anja. They made arrangements for our pick-up at the airport when we arrived to Ecuador which was late in the evening, 11:00 pm. Marcello our driver met us on arrival and drove us to the gated entrance of Wantara Suites where Pierre and Anja warmly recieved us just before midnight. We felt like family! Anja had baked us a loaf of bread that was just out of the oven and aroma of fresh baked bread filled our room. Lagarto Suite and the entire complex is beautiful and welcoming. We prepared and ate all our breadfast and dinners in the suite taking advantage of the abundance of fresh vegetables and fruits in the local markets. Pierre and Anja were great hosts and very warm and friendly people that were really good friends. They assisted with all our questions about the area and Ecuador and were constantly checking on how we were enjoying our stay. Marcello our driver from the airport also was fantastic. He drove us to Otavalo and Cotocachi for a day trip and joined us for lunch in Otavalo. He also was available to take us to other locations in the city when needed. The entire experience associated with Wantara was beyond expectations. We made new friends who welcomed us to our first visit to Ecuador and made sure we had a home and enjoyed ourselves! Thank you Wolfgang, AnneMarie, Pierre, Anja and Marcello! I would visit Quito again just to visit my friends at Wantara Suites!
My husband and I were looking for the perfect place for our month in Quito, and we found it at Wantara Suites. We wanted to be in the colonial center due to my work there, and yet we both crave a feeling of space. We got both at Wantara Suites. I had a 10 minute walk to work, and we had a beautiful apartment with a great garden for relaxing. I often worked outside on our porch, enjoying the view. I can't think of one thing to improve Wantara Suites. When we just offhandedly mentioned one small detail that was not absolutely perfect, Wolfgang and Andi said that was something they had been considering and the very next day, they implemented changes. We barbecued in the grill a number of times, which was really fun! The apartment itself was incredibly comfortable and felt very spacious. We had a great porch area to hang out outside as well as a very comfortable area inside the house to hang out. We cooked a lot, and the stove was very user friendly and easy to operate. The refrigerator was perfect for the two of us. We used the blender just about every day for fruit smoothies, and it made our stay--we bought fresh fruits and veggies all of the time. Oh, how I miss those. My husband loves his showers, and the shower/hot water/tile were great. The bed was also very comfortable, and the sheets are great--nice, high quality cotton. I honestly don't know of anything that I would do to change Wantara Suites. Wolfgang and Andi are so friendly and helpful, the setting is peaceful in the middle of the city, the views are great, and the comfort is amazing. I will never stay anywhere else when I am in Quito if I can help it. Thanks Wolfgang and Andi. I'm sorry it took so long for me to post a review!
We arrived late in the evening and Wolfgang had arranged an English speaking driver to meet us. It's just as well as the place would not have been easy to find. We traveled from the airport into the historic old town which at first appeared a bit dingy. On arrival at the property, the gate was opened to a lovely, green courtyard and the pristine suites.
Our apartment consisted of a living room, kitchen and bathroom en-suite. It was clean and spacious and tastefully decorated with Andi's art. On the surprisingly cold nights (I had not realized how chilly the elevation can make Quito), there was a fire with plenty of wood - I made great use of my scout skills.
It made a great base of operations :-). It's just a short walk to the center of the historic center and great dining.
As good as the accommodation was, the hosts were better. Wolfgang has an extensive list of English speaking guides and drivers in his contact list. He helped us have a marvelous stay, evening ordering Pizza when were to bushed to go out!
I thoroughly recommend Wantara Suites and will be back when I am next in Quito
We just spent two months based in this wonderful apartment in Quito, taking side trips here and there. We were in the Colibri Suite , and would recommend it highly!
The adobe complex is perfectly situated in a residential neighborhood a 10-minute walk from the Historic Center. Very secure. Beautifully landscaped garden and common areas in the center of the complex. Wolfgang and Andi are very responsive hosts -- accessible and helpful -- English-speaking (as well as German, Spanish and likely other languages as well.).
For us, the Colibri apartment felt like home. Extremely comfortable. Large living room/dining room/kitchen has comfortable seating, dining table, high ceilings, wood-burning stove (and plentiful firewood) for cool nights. In the corner, the kitchen area is well-equipped with four gas burners, microwave, refrigerator., toaster, sufficient pots and pans and utensils to prepare real meals. No oven, but we didn't miss it. Free bottled water in 5-gallon jugs. A spacious bedroom has very comfortable queen bed, a desk, plenty of closet and storage space. Large bathroom with great hot shower. And very spacious private outdoor patio with table and chairs plus several hammock-chairs as well. (This is in addition to the common-areas outdoors, which are shared with 5 or 6 other apartments.). Housekeeping twice per week is included, and laundry service is available for a small charge. Also great wifi.
As two-month guests, we didn't need to be on-the-go all the time, and sometimes a day spent lazing around "home" with a good book and a fire was a delight! Such a comfortable space!
In the neighborhood there are nearby small stores for basic items -- on the corner down the hill, or along Ambato up the hill. Supermarket (Santa Maria) is a 10-minute walk to the Historic Center (on Bolivar north of Venezuela). Mercado Central (large market hall) is a bit longer walk, but great for fresh fruits, veggies, etc.
Taxis are easy to pick up at the corner down the hill on Loja, if you need one, and Wolfgang is always happy to arrange drivers for trips outside the city. (We used Marcelo several times and liked him very much.)
Some side-trips we really enjoyed: Otovalo (indigenous artisanal market in the highlands), where we spent a couple of days; Termas at Papallacta (a really lovely hot springs resort 90 minutes from Quito -- worth the splurge!), where we spent two nights.
We miss our home at Wantara!
It was Wonderful to stay there. The appartments are very Comfortable and enchanting, the Garden is a Paradise and Andi and Wolle were so helpful and nice! The best Place to stay in Quito !!!
Atmosphere - Andi and Wolfgang have created a lovely space with beautiful landscaping and beautifully scented gardens to welcome butterflies, birds and their guests from the world over. The outdoor spaces that each apartment has encourage you to greet your neighbors and connect about your experiences. Or, you can simply relax in the well-appointed comfort of your apartment. The oasis was welcome after outings throughout the city of Quito. Andi and Wolfgang are friendly, helpful and kind hosts, which added positively to the experience.
Location - within easy (about 10 mins) to center of old town. Very convenient to sight-seeing the major plazas and churches (San Fransisco, St. Augustin, Plaza Grande, Compañia de Jesus, etc.). There were a few small stores nearby for basic food items; the larger store was in historic center.
Amenities - Wantara had the best- equipped kitchen in our entire time in Ecuador (3 months/3 self-catering locations). They provided water (free) and laundry service (for minimal cost) that simplified our stay. We had just come from the jungle and two weeks on the road and had piles of laundry!
We will recommend Wantara Suites to anyone looking for a self-catering place on Quito.
This was our first trip to Ecuador and Wantara is a great place to stay! It is in close proximity to many of Quito's historical attractions in Old Town and only a few blocks away from La Ronda. The Lagarto suite was full of charm and comfort. Walking out onto the garden courtyard was simply heavenly, surrounded by the sound of frogs and flying hummingbirds. Wolfgang and Andi were very gracious hosts, always helpful and kind.

Dear Guest! We are a family with German origin and live in Ecuador for many years. We have worked in the hospitality business, managing a travel agency for a couple of years. Now we run our own Wantara Suites. Our service is flawless and we can help our guests by organizing all the little treats that make travelling easier. We love to share our uniquely peaceful spaces with interesting people from all over the world. We would be happy to host you!
Fascinated by the magic of the 'Old Town' where authentic Ecuadorian traditions are still alive and can be experienced in its streets and places, we decided that this is the place we want to live. After a year of extensive search we finally found this treasure. It took us three years to carefully renovate the place. We created seven independent units cautious of not loosing the colonial charm of the property. Art objects in the lush garden and cozy living spaces gives 'Wantara' a special flair.
