Superficie 4 000 sq ft

Beautiful glass house in the woods

  • 5 sur 5

We had a lovely stay at Hirondelle last weekend. The place has the feel of a large Soho loft but drop dead views onto a lush and private property. John is a thoughtful host who shares this very personal home generously. It is a lived in house full of character. There is not an off the shelf item in the house with the possible exception of the televisions. Every fork, cup and plate is hand picked and mostly antique. We're a family of four so it was perfect for us. And close to Millbrook and other lovely spots in the Hudson Valley. Very easy to find.

Tucked away, fully furnished, great for our weekend stay

  • 5 sur 5

Tons of art all over the house which gives it a very sophisticated feel. Lots of nude art, which may be a concern for certain parents of small children, but not an issue for our group. House was clean when we got there. Great location, nicely tucked away from roads, noise, cities, etc. Very very rough driveway, but nothing that a 2-WD sub-compact couldn't handle. Driveway is also very long, and narrow, so could be a potential issue in the dead of winter if there's snow (we came in late fall and it wasn't a problem even after a rain). Very open architecture, and not a lot of doors in places where a door would usually be. Not an issue for us, but maybe for more privacy-needy guests. Open architecture lends to sound traveling all around the house, so there isn't much sound privacy either. Again, not an issue for us, but maybe for someone else. It's single-story, so there's no stairs, which would be a hidden "plus" for anyone with handicapped guests. Owner is sometimes hard to contact, but easy to work with. Great wifi, cable TV, several TVs in the house, and a decent sound system. Piano is out of tune, but that really doesn't matter. Overall great place to stay. I would stay there again.

Beautiful but there are caveats

  • 2 sur 5

The pictures are accurate. This is a beautiful and unique home, full of art and memorabilia. What the pictures can't describe is the challenging level of comfort. If you're looking for luxury, this home isn't for you. If you're ok with a more rustic experience then you won't be disappointed. Here are some of the challenges that I wished the owner had shared with us before renting. First, the water has a strong sulfur smell (aka rotten eggs). We had to use bottled water to drink and to cook. Even so, running the faucet to wash dishes or to take a shower filled the house with an unpleasant odor. Our general routine was to take a shower in the morning and then head out to Babette's Kitchen (totally recommended!) for breakfast so that the odor would dissipate. In terms of cleanliness, the house is average to below average. There are a lot of cobwebs and small spiders in the corners and underneath things. Expect a fair number of moths and flies (this was unavoidable because the only way to cool the house was to keep the doors open and there aren't any screens there). On the plus side though, no mosquitoes! We visited in the summer and the heat was a challenge. The house does not have A/C, ceiling fans or exhaust fans, so when the outside temperature rises, the house becomes uncomfortably hot. The owner pointed to one fan, but it was covered in a thick layer of dust so we did not use it. The wood framed interior is striking, but if you're a light sleeper, you should know that the roof expands and contracts with temperature change and creates loud sounds throughout the night. The house has an open floor plan and the interior walls don't go all the way to the roof. That means the bedrooms and bathrooms are open to the other living areas. So this may not be a great home if you're traveling with a large group and need some privacy. The house is dog friendly. Our dog loved playing in the large grass yard outside. When inside, he liked chasing the moths, surveying the corners of the rooms and ducking under furniture. He'd emerge happy but covered in cobwebs! The last day we were there, there was a kerosene smell in the living room for reasons that we couldn't understand, so we stayed in the bedroom area. Overall, we kept saying to each other that while we loved the architecture of the house and the interesting art and furniture and books on display, for the amount we paid, we could've stayed at a *much nicer* bed and breakfast in the area.

Réponse du propriétaire: We have had many wonderful guests who have left glowing thanks in the house guest book here. This one was not that. Arriving with some strange emotional baggage (exacerbated by a heat wave), he piled up complaints (although he & girl & dog chose to remain in the house the full four days) and then demanded a refund of the rental payment, implicitly threatening a negative review here: Our well water is not chlorinated and does not come from a plastic bottle; it has the taste of the earth, including some iron, but very slight. We have been drinking this water for more than thirty years and raised two sons from infancy on it (they are now both over six foot four). Report of "strong smell" highly exaggerated. The tiny snowwhite Maltese dog went into places even a vacuum can't reach and left sweet nothings there. The house is always thoroughly cleaned. Kerosene smell? No. Ammonia? Yes, from decomposing dog feces in the kitchen trash basket (should have been properly disposed of) and dirty dishes in the sink, both of which very noticeable on my return. There are not screen doors (there are window screens everywhere) and AC because in general not needed, few insects and few excessively hot days (unfortunately when they were here, but it rains at the beach too). The openness of the house is marvelous but. contrary to his contention. the two bathrooms are completely enclosed and very private. Finally, the so-called "loud sounds" attributed to the timber structure must have been ice cubes falling in the ice maker, causing the terrified guest to imagine the roof collapsing in on him or Sasquatch lurking at the front door! If you must make a stink, please don't blame the host.
