For those seeking to step away from the bustle of the city and slow down in a friendly, charming town.
Basswood is a historic home that has been lovingly remodeled to include five private suites each with their own unique style.
The Sycamore Suite features a private bathroom, kitchenette, and separate living space to enjoy. Located in the heart of Capon Bridge, you'll find it easy to walk to local restaurants and entertainment, while being perched above town.
THE SPACE
Basswood is a historical home in the quaint town of Capon Bridge, West Virginia that was lovingly renovated in 2021 to include five unique and private suites. You'll find wide plank wood floors throughout the building as well as ornate window and door moulding's that have been carefully preserved. The space has been furnished with beautiful antiques, mid-century modern flare and is interspersed with work from local artists.
The Sycamore Suite is one of the largest suites in Basswood and features both a bedroom, separate living space and overlooks downtown Capon Bridge. In the bedroom you'll find a dreamy queen size bed and a connected private bathroom stocked with all basic amenities. The bedroom also has an antique sitting desk that invites you to journal or write letters.
The adjacent living space has a sofa bed that is large enough to fit two adults and a 43" Roku Smart TV with Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+ streaming services all hooked up and ready to enjoy. You'll also have access to the fastest internet in the area. Additionally, the living space has a sitting table large enough for four adults and a kitchenette featuring a mini-fridge, microwave, Keurig with coffee & tea, and basic kitchen items like mugs, glasses, and utensils.
Outside, you'll find yourself perched above the Cacapon River, with easy access to dip your toes in, a few minutes down the road at nearby cafe and venue, The River House. The river is great for kayaking, canoeing, or tubing and you'll find tips on where to start and finish upon your arrival to Basswood. Be mindful that the outside space is shared among guests but you'll have plenty of nooks to sit and read a book or enjoy the sunshine.
Across the street, the Farmer's Daughter Market & Butcher has consistently won multiple awards over the years, such as Best Burger in WV, Best Butcher in WV and over a half-dozen Good Food Awards. You'll find all your grocery necessities and locally-made products.
A short stroll down the road, The River House is a homegrown arts & music nonprofit, featuring a cafe, gallery and music venue. The River House has been recognized in recent years as one of West Virginia's best music venues and art organizations. Find inspiration in the rotating gallery, or shop locally-made merchandise in the renovated 100 year-old building. There are a variety of events each month, from live music performances to free workshops.
Planning a destination wedding? An elopement or micro-wedding at the Appalachian Wedding Chapel & Boutique at Basswood is a stress free, fun and meaningful way to celebrate your most special day. With officiants on staff, you and up to 25 guests can enjoy an intimate ceremony and light reception right here on the banks of the beautiful Cacapon River.
At Basswood we never ask guests to complete "checkout chores" prior to leaving. We believe while traveling you should be free to relax and enjoy yourself as much as possible.

Guest access
Guests will enter Basswood through the front door using a code specific to them that enables access into the building. The stairs will take you to the second floor where you will enter a second code specific to you into the keypad to gain entry into your own private suite.
The property consists of five separate, private suites, each with their own bedroom, bathroom and living room. You may cross paths with other guests on the property, coming & going. Please be friendly & respectful. All guests are free to enjoy the spacious front porch and side yard that parallels the Cacapon River.
Other things to note
This is a second floor suite, up one flight of stairs. The entire suite is private and only for your use. Nothing is shared. Each suite has its own keypad lock. The entrance to a completely separate suite is across the hallway.
Three separate, private suites (including this one) all use the front door of the house. The front door has a lock on it that only the three booked guests will be able to use.
The whole house consists of five private suites, each with their own bedroom, bathroom and living room. You may cross paths with other guests on the property, coming & going.

Hi! Iâm Ian, co-owner and host of Basswood - A Quiet & Creative Getaway.
Originally from the beautiful northwest corner of New Jersey, I met my wife in Northern Virginia during 2010. When she introduced me to her family farm in Capon Bridge, I was struck by the townâs familiar peaceful vibe and green landscape, similar to that of my own home base. It became something of our touch tree; a place weâd come back to again and again over the years to relax, unwind, and unplug.
My wife and I lived all over the map, from upstate New York to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We even spent a year in China! Ultimately, our hearts gravitated towards loved ones and we decided to plant roots in the Shenandoah Valley to begin a family of our own.
Friends and extended family enjoyed visiting the Capon Bridge area on the weekends to escape city traffic, float on the river, and feed the farm animals. Soon enough it was clear that there were no overnight lodging options within close proximity, other than a tent and a spare bedroom. And so, Basswood was born in 2021, at first out of necessity.
Basswood has grown into a touch tree for many repeat guests looking for balance and comfort out in the country. Thoughtfully renovated with 1890âs bones, this Quiet & Creative Getaway has been a full family labor-of-love. Each room is carefully curated with decor and amenities to make you feel at home and every booking is personally managed and communicated by me.

Basswood was originally the home of Dr. J.S. Offuttâknown affectionately as âUncle Pudge.â Built in the late 1890âs, it served as both his home, as well as his medical practice. The local post office also operated in the space now occupied by the Appalachian Wedding Chapel.
Uncle Pudge was a life-long bachelor and upon his death in 1928, the property passed to his nephew, John Ward, and his wife, Clemetine Lemley. Mr. Ward became president of the Western Frederick Bank in Gore, Virginia. The Wards were a gregarious couple who renovated the upstairs for approved renters. They developed a deep affection for their upstairs housemates, the Largent family, and bequeathed the property to them. The Largentâs owned the B&N Grocery just across the bridge, and Mr. Largent became the townâs mayor.
In 2021 the property was acquired and renovated into the home you see today. The rehab project included adding a new roof, upgrading all the electrical, HVAC, plumbing and hot water systems, as well as many interior improvements. The grounds were also improved with new walkways, amenities and landscaping.
Basswood opened its doors for overnight accommodations in April 2022. Each room is uniquely furnished in a refreshing mix of traditional and mid-century modern decor, featuring original artwork created by local artists. You'll find wide plank wood floors throughout the building as well as ornate window and door moulding's that have been carefully preserved.
