Dijon is a city rich in culture. This richness is due to its past as it was the stronghold of the Duchy of Burgundy. French only since 1477, the city was during the 15th century a renowned place throughout Europe. Subsequently, in the 19th century, Dijon experienced its second prosperous period thanks to industrial development.
Today, this past remains present through a wide variety of architectural styles that give a unique character to the city of Dijon. Here are the 10 must-see sights and activities in Dijon.
The Owl's Trail
But why an owl, you may ask? Because it is the symbol of the city. A sculpture of the bird is located at the corner of Notre-Dame Church, and over the centuries, it has become a lucky charm. If possible, take this walk through the center again at night to enjoy the superb lighting.
The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy
This is the essential building to visit in Dijon. It combines the former ducal residence of the Middle Ages and the Palace of the States of Burgundy from the 17th century. The architectural ensemble was unified by Mansart, architect of Louis XIV, who gave the building and the Place de la Libération its classical style. The aim was to showcase the power of the king: a successful bet!
Les Halles
It's time to get serious because Dijon is also a gastronomic capital. If Les Halles is definitely a must-visit in Dijon, it is primarily a must for foodies. Constructed in the 19th century, if the style seems familiar, it's because the plans were inspired by those made by the Eiffel company. A market is held there on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, but you will also find cafes. It's the ideal opportunity to discover local products. Enjoy! And for the pleasure of the eyes, the building is a beautiful example of industrial architecture with numerous ornaments on its structure.
Hôtel de Vogüé
Impossible to miss its roof of glazed tiles in the landscape. Built at the beginning of the 17th century for a parliamentarian, it is one of the most beautiful private hotels you can visit in Dijon. Its architecture mixes classic style and Italian Renaissance. Richly decorated both inside and out, it is a little gem not to be missed.
The Well of Moses
Behind this mysterious name hides a masterpiece of sculpture. To admire it, go to the Chartreuse de Champmol founded in the 14th century and then dismantled during the Revolution. This well is the remains of a calvary built in the middle of the grand cloister and sculpted by a Dutch artist named Claus Sluter. It is by admiring the realization of the different biblical characters that one understands why the artistic refinement of the court of Burgundy was so renowned.
Mulot & Petitjean
For foodies again, the Mulot & Petitjean gingerbread factory is a must-visit in Dijon. And for good reason, the city claims to be the capital of this delicacy! It is the oldest factory in Dijon, dating back to 1796, and thus celebrated its 220th spring in 2016. To discover the making of this delicious gingerbread, head to Boulevard de l'Ouest, but don't miss a visit to the historic shop located in Place Bossuet, in a beautiful half-timbered building.
Parks and Gardens:
At the Jardin des Sciences, also known as Parc de l'Arquebuse, you can enrich your knowledge of botany and the universe at the planetarium.
The Jardin Darcy (see the photo above), although it has nothing to do with a certain English gentleman, is no less charming. You can meet "Pompom the bear," stroll on the terraces, and then look for the hidden water reservoir.
The Parc de la Colombière, very popular with residents, also awaits you with its French-style garden created for the Grand Condé by a student of Le Nôtre.
Notre-Dame Church
There are many religious buildings in Dijon, but if you have to choose just one, visit this one. It is on a buttress of Notre-Dame Church that you can admire the famous Dijon owl. Touch it with your left hand if you want it to bring you luck. And don't forget to make a wish! In addition to this owl, look up and have fun with the three rows of sculpted gargoyles on the façade.
This church is the oldest in the city and was a headache to construct due to the limited space available to the architect. When the hour strikes, look towards the top of the right tower, where you will see automata, known as the Jacquemart family, striking the bell. The interior also holds its treasures with a polychrome statue of the Virgin, very beautiful stained glass windows, and an organ.
The Consortium:
Visiting Dijon is not just about admiring old stones. For some time now, the city has wanted to make its mark on the contemporary cultural scene. This is accomplished with this art center, which has an international reputation. For architecture fans, the building itself is worth a visit with its 4,000 square meters designed by the Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. It is both a space for exhibitions, artistic encounters, cultural mediation, and audiovisual projections. You just have to choose your activity from the program.
The Wines:
It is obviously impossible to recommend a Burgundian city without talking about wines. Dijon is the perfect opportunity to taste local wines, renowned worldwide. With a vineyard of more than twenty-eight thousand hectares, you will surely find a local wine to please your palate.
How to Get Around in Dijon?
Train and Bus
These are the most convenient means of transportation to get to Dijon. By train from Paris, you have a choice of schedules as there are about 21 daily connections. These are provided by TGV or TER trains. The fares are reasonable, ranging between 35 and 50 euros per trip. As for the duration, depending on the train, it takes 1h30 to 3h to travel from the City of Light to the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy.
Dijon is also served by all low-cost bus companies. You can easily find a trip with a starting price below 10 euros depending on the days and times. As for the duration of the journey, it takes about 3 hours for the fastest.
Car
This is the other most used means of transport to reach Dijon. The city is located on the A6 motorway axis. You can also reach the city via the A5 in case of heavy traffic.

There is no airport, or rather, there is, but it does not do commercial flights, so it is not the most convenient for visiting Dijon. In case you need it, the nearest airports are Lyon and Geneva.
